Arabic Word of the Day 35#
ASL (waving hand)
...Today we're going to look at:
ASL (pretending to eat food) FOOD!
*So first we're going to start with normal food. What I mean by that, is food everyone will know like fruit and fish etc... Then maybe in another post I'll do a post on Arabic food (I don't know much from other cultures so I might need some help from other natives here ;p ). If this is long then this might spread over a couple of posts ;)
*Let's begin! Firstly 'food' in Arabic is "طعام" (t^a3aam). This is the one word you have no excuse to neglect in pronunciation! If you do, you'll have an hour after school! Now get practicing! ;p
*فواكه = "Fawaakih" = Fruit - Make sure you pronounce the "h". In English we tend to make it silent, but in Arabic we don't.
*خضروات / خضراوات = "Khudrawaat" = Vegetables - There's two spellings of this for some reason. Some people spell "khudrawaat" with two alifs, and some don't. Since we are focusing on speech, this shouldn't matter too much.
*أناناس = "Anaanaas" (Ananas) = Pineapples - The same word found in 41 other languages, but originated in Spain or Portugal
*تفاح = "Tufaah^" = Apples
*موز = "Mawz" = Bananas - Apparently a banana is a berry! [funfact]
*برتقال = "Burtuq^aal" = Oranges - Remember the colours? Yep it's very similar to the colour "orange". The pronunciation actually sounds a bit like Portugal in Arabic: "Alburtughaal". I recall a time when I used to have an Arabic teacher, and he told the class the reason why 'oranges' sounded like Portugal. He said: " At the time when Arabs took over Spain area, they used to get oranges from Portugal and oranges were called "Burtuq^aal" so they used to call Portugal their 'back garden where they get 'Alburtuq^aal' hence the name 'Alburtughaal' ". Anyways that was a laugh, I didn't really believe that (cus I was a smart kid fff) though some people did. He was either making it as a joke, or generally meant it (I mean no offence he didn't look like the sharpest stone). Anyways, sorry for bringing in my boring life into this, but maybe it could help you remember how to say "Portugal in Arabic.
*بطيخ = "Bit^eekh" = Watermelons - mmm :3
*طماطم = "T^amaat^im" = Tomatoes - A FRUIT!
*بطاطس = "Bat^aat^is" = Potatoes - If you're British you'll live on this XD JK
*جزر = "Jazar" = Carrots
*خيار = "Khiyaar" = Cucumbers - Also means 'option'. Same spelling. Same pronunciation. Completely different meaning! :o [sigh] you're going to have to infer from the speech to know which one they're talking about
*(عنب) = "3inab" = Grapes
*خوخ / دراق = "Duraak^ / Khookh" = Peach - "Khookh" is much more common and it sounds funny lol - I recommend you read "James and the Giant Peach" (Roald Dahl) if you haven't read it already (childhood memories lol)
*فراولة = "Faraawila" = Strawberries
*كرز = "Karaz" = Cherries - Easy to pronounce and yum!
*بروكلي = "Brokoli" = Broccoli - Kawaii little trees!! :3 [bites their head off]
*كوسة = "Kosa" = Courgette, Zucchini whatever you want to call it! I call it horse food! >_< yuk muk! (whoever likes this needs to fix their taste buds! no offence ;p)
*توت العليق = "Toot al3ulayq^" = Raspberries
*بصل = "Bas^al" = Onions
*جوز = "Jawz" = Nuts
*جوز الهند = "Jawz alhind" = Coconuts - "jawz" means "nuts" and "alhind" means "India". So maybe coconuts reached Arabia via India?
*And I'm going to finish this list with the famous Arabic "تمر" (tamr) meaning 'dates' (as in the one you eat - before an annoying child asks!).
*So there! Here's some fruit and vegetables to begin with. If I've missed out a particular craving you have, please comment below and I'll answer as soon as possible! (I admit I'm not the type of person who has the talent of being on time).
*Thanks for Reading! Any Qs, Proof-reading, Suggestions, Improvements, I'll be washing the "tamr" ready for half-nine! Hmm 6 hours left... ;p Tomorrow we'll be continuing our food journey so be there on time!
Also, any natives or anyone know any Arabic food from across Arabia please note below that would be very appreciated as I only live between my walls! ;D Thanks! Have a Great Afternoon CYA [I wonder if the GIFs worked? let's see! Edit; Nope it didn't]
Great list! My favorite on this list is “Anaanaas”, even though I am allergic to it and it makes my tongue swell up...I still can’t resist eating it though, it is so delicious.
Lol I can eat them freely haha! JK I was eating one yesterday so I thought of doing fruit today. I like them as well but they're not my favourite. I like "Albit^eekh", "Alkhookh", Bashun Froot (aka: Passion fruit - same pronunciation only with a "b") and Alteen (figs) the most! (depending on the timing).
Ps: I use "al" ^ before the words because it's general (I'll go through it in one of the coming food lessons)
If you want to beat Andres then you're going to have to find a clever mushroom, or at least one that's isn't thick)
Woah! you're getting mixed up right here! Nope I am not a clever mushroom or else I would've eaten you instead of getting chased about by you! ;p
don't worry, I'm kind enough to eat it after the wedding... it's the 1st June HAH?
Yep, it’s 1st of June. Well...at least I can enjoy a few more days of being alive I guess. (You may not want to eat violins though, they are a bit to crunchy.)
استمري بالعمل الجيد <- Correction.
Lol don't use Google Translate ;p "استمروا " means "continue", but it is used when talking to a group of people, and although my name is "SASSYandsisters", I am independent! (except for my lazy co-worker Sousou XD Hope she doesn't read this lol).
Also "في" means 'in", so you are technically saying "Continue (pl) in the good work".
Anyways, I got the message in the end! :D and "سأحاول " is my reply (you can use Google Translate for this one, I've checked it!) ;D Have a Nice Day!
' Bat^aat^is" = Potatoes - If you're British you'll live on this XD JK' I love my potatoes. Nothing can beat them.
True lol what's the point of ketchup after that? ;p Maybe you can have it with a scrumptious mushroom? ;D Hehe
me too! I LOVE POTATO! but I prefer mushrooms ;)
(still warning Sassy but nothing happened till now ^^)
"Ahlan"/"Marh^aban" in Arabic ;p If you ever wonder about that... Yup it's long because it did take a while :) but it's worth it!
ههه أسفة كنت جائعة (Haha sorry I was hungry)... Do you know Arabic or were you using Google? Just wondering if I should reply back in Arabic or not :)
رائع! يبدو أنك تجيدين اللغة. سأتكلم معكي بالعربية، إذا لم تفهمي شيئا أخبريني (Wonderful! It seems that you are good at the language. I will talk to you in Arabic, if you don't understand something, tell me)
It will be good practice for you :)
مهلاً نسيتِ الفطر!!!!
(LOL I always meant to hear it as "Khaoukh" not "Khoukh"!)
