ARMYs and other K-Poppers: Please understand that you have to stop this

I know not all ARMYs and K-Poppers are constantly filling the forum with stuff solely about K-Pop, but there are still some who are doing this and are trying to defend what they are doing.

I don't know why I keep having to explain this: it should be simple to understand, but Duolingo is a LANGUAGE-LEARNING SITE. Why you have to come on Duolingo and post about BTS and other K-Pop groups is beyond me, because there are multiple sites where you can talk about K-Pop all you want.

Please stop trying to make excuses about what you are doing--you should not be doing it, and there is no excuse. Not everyone who is trying to learn Korean is going to like BTS and other K-Pop groups, and seeing ARMYs talking about BTS and other K-Pop groups in the forums is honestly annoying and uncalled for.

I could understand if you wanted to post something RELATED TO THE LANGUAGE, such as lyrics to a song or lines from your favorite K-Drama that are in Korean and you want to understand, but if you are simply talking about K-Pop and things that are not language-related, you need to stop.

Duolingo is not the place for that, and it is getting out of control. No one is trying to be rude to you by telling you that you shouldn't be doing that, because it's true. Again, as I mentioned before ( and people still don't seem to get this) Duolingo is meant for LEARNING A LANGUAGE, not TALKING ABOUT K-POP.

To be honest, I enjoy K-pop myself, and it actually contributed in getting me through extremely tough times, but I choose to express it on other sites because I know that Duolingo is meant for learning a language.

I only learned about K-Pop and groups like BTS after I had begun learning Korean. I am learning Korean for other purposes rather than understanding the lyrics of K-Pop songs (while I don't disagree with people learning it for that reason) but please express your love for K-Pop on sites meant for that.

Duolingo is NOT MEANT FOR THAT.

Ironically, I started listening to BTS because of all the posts about them on Duolingo. However I wish people would discuss the lyrics, because a lot of the translations are really confusing and it would be nice to know what they were actually singing about.

Yeah, I completely agree with you! That's completely okay! But if all you're talking about is BTS and K-Pop and other groups, then that's when it starts to get annoying :/

I wholeheartedly agree with you! If the Japanese forums aren't littered with anime posts, then the Korean forums shouldn't have k-pop posts that don't have anything to do with the language itself. They're the main reason why I took my Korean learning to LingoDeer. Honestly, I think a good majority of these people are learning Korean for all the wrong reasons. I personally dislike k-pop and k-dramas as they simply aren't my cup of tea, I do like other aspects of Korean culture

As someone who really enjoys Kpop and Kdramas, I can still understand this. Duolingo is for language-learning, not for fans to take over.

Well said, brother. There are so many cool things about Korea, but I don't think k-pop is one of them. I know quite a few Koreans and they say that k-pop is a teenage thing, which can be well observed on these forums. To be honest, the enthusiasm of these folks makes me despise the whole thing—it's like a food you don't like, but you're forced to eat.

i completely agree with you, but people also do that with other languages and either way it cannot be stopped. If multiple people are doing this the best this is to not click on the discussion and the people who are interested can share whatever passion they have

May 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/nomnamjoon

Yes, you're right! I know that people love K-Pop, but I am just not understanding why they have to talk about it here, which a site meant for learning a language. There are lots of sites meant for talking about things like that, so why do it here? I am also aware that people do that with other languages, but I think it's safe to say that it is mostly seen in the Korean forum, due to the new Korean surge. But I just wish people would understand that Duolingo is simply meant for learning languages :(

May 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/earthtoafnan

so true, not only that there are so many korea boos so desperate in trying to adapt and be as much korean as possible when that is not even necessary

May 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/nomnamjoon

Right? There are a lot of ARMYs that I've seen that are like "I'm gonna learn Korean so I can fly out to South Korea and marry BTS," or something along those lines. To me, that's waay to obsessive and honestly really sad if that's their reason for learning the language. I honestly love learning Korean and I think that the culture is beautfiul, but I've wanted to visit Korea, China, and Japan ever since I was young and had no idea that K-Pop was a thing. I just think Asian culture is neat, but Korea boos are kind of ruining it :/

May 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/yeongjaexeclipse

I totally agree, I'm a massive ARMY and, obviously like other fans, would love to meet BTS. But I'm learning Korean because I love the language not so "I can marry BTS". I don't understand why others can't be realistic and rational

May 28, 2019

I agree with you guys. I do like BTS but I wouldn't want to learn Korean because of them, or to "marry" them.

May 28, 2019

I think it's really cool that Kpop got me interested in a country and culture I probably otherwise would know basically nothing about. A goal of mine now is to teach English in Korea - because I genuinely love the language and the culture now, thanks to discovering Kpop about a year ago. I do not, however, want to "be Korean" or anything like that, and that mentality deeply disturbs me.

May 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/kurek.exe

May 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/_MsLexi_

I completely agree! I have a BTS profile but there are people in this Korean course that solely comment about k-pop, as if the idols invented the language. Yes, k-pop made me interested in this language but we are going to leave k-pop related things on k-pop related websites only

May 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Sphynyre

i think the problem here arises because those people are just really, really young.

i'm part of the fandom but i don't like shoving it in peoples faces. yes, i'm learning Korean BECAUSE of K-pop, and i think a large majority of the people who also are learning it are learning for the same reason. but i'm learning to better understand their lyrics. i also play a korean-oriented game that isn't translated well, so for practicality reasons, im learning. the people who make discussions regarding K-Pop and so on, are not.

the problem here is that most of the time those are the same people who are maybe... around 14 years old, they're immature, and they're fangirls, so they're gonna do what immature fangirls do and they're going to fill the forums talking about their faves and promoting them and their albums instead of filling the forums by talking about what they're supposed to: the language and culture surrounding it.

if you want to talk about your faves, duolingo is NOT the site you're supposed to do that for. we are all here to learn languages, not talk about streaming your fave's music. use an app like AMINO or something. go on twitter. there's plenty of places to stream, promote, and discuss your k-pop but like everyone is saying, duolingo is not for that.

it's important that the people who are actually trying to learn the language are able to access discussions that are productive due to the fact that a lot of times, people learn these types of languages for a career - usually to become a teacher. not just that, but it's overall more practical. the less conversations talking about how cute your bias is and the more conversations talking about what honorifics to use without making you sound like a horrible person when speaking the language, the better! lol

i just wish K-poppers could be a little more mature about these things. the best thing to do is just ignore the discussions. if you don't give them the attention they're looking for, they'll lose interest and stop. hopefully there might be a system in the future where duolingo can crack down on these types of things from happening more. ;;

May 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/MilaHouk

I know right! I wish they would just understand that we come here to learn a language so we can better understand our favorite groups. I am an ARMY and I agree that many ARMYs are immature fangirls. Not necessarily because of age (I'm 12 and I consider myself pretty mature for my age). People need to learn when is a good time, and when it's not.

June 4, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/OliverKalman

I think they understand it—they have the same motif like you, they're just immature, as you said. There are so many measurements of immaturity: spamming the clubs' feed with "WHO IS AN ARMY HERE?" is just one that isn't subtle.

Another measurement, that is subtle, is lack of persistence, most of these fangirls get as far down the line as finishing the alphabet—they wouldn't repeat the lessons, because they already know it, they remember it. And because they haven't memorized crucial words, when the next lesson is a bit more difficult, they just put it to the side like "I'll do this later", but later never comes.

When clubs were still a thing, I kept kicking out these people that would join in on Monday, have an enormous amount of EXP over two days and wouldn't touch their Duolingo ever again.

June 4, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/jvitti624

There's no need to make this personal. Some folks use Duo more, some use it less -- the point is, all users should stay on-topic within the comments and nobody should be spamming about BTS (which, in my opinion, just makes ARMY look foolish).

I actually started learning Korean first and then decided to finally listen to k-pop (which I'd been planning to do for months, years even) afterwards too! I've definitely fallen hard for the genre and BTS, but they aren't my sole motivation for learning Korean. It's more my genuine interest in Korean culture and East-Asian lifestyles and desire to eventually live abroad in one such country.

It honestly annoys me when people learn a language just because of the media they consume - which seems especially prevalent with Korean and Japanese. I am glad that k-pop and anime [among other forms of media] have introduced these cultures and languages to people that might've otherwise never felt any desire to learn a second, third, fourth or so on language, but it seems as though a lot of these people don't want to learn the language(s) out of genuine curiosity, respect or love for these cultures (or even just learning in general). Rather, they are doing it to look good or in an attempt to grab the attention of the artists they are so fond of.

Plus it's really cringey when twelve year old white girls un-ironically weave random Korean words into their language and posts. Probably even more so when fourteen to twenty-nine year old man-children do the same with Japanese.

Maybe I'm just hateful though.

Poka poka.

June 3, 2019

You're on point. Interest in kpop should be just an ADDITIONAL thing when it comes to learning Korean. I truly think that most of those who are now hitting the Korean course hard now for the sake of loving BTS, are going to quit sooner or later—haven't seen many kpop avatars with more than a 30-day streak ever.

That's why I said I think it's okay for people to post about song lyrics and things like that:

"I am learning Korean for other purposes rather than understanding the lyrics of K-Pop songs (while I don't disagree with people learning it for that reason"

I'm just saying if all you're going to talk about is K-Pop and BTS (about things that are not related to the language) then you probably shouldn't post that type of stuff on the forum :) I also stated that if you want to use the forums to talk about K-Pop and BTS with things that are RELATED TO THE LANGUAGE, then it's okay:

"I could understand if you wanted to post something RELATED TO THE LANGUAGE, such as lyrics to a song or lines from your favorite K-Drama that are in Korean and you want to understand."

Yes, Kpop is cool, and yes, entertainment in your language of choice is really helpful in learning a language (or maybe said entertainment is what inspired you in the first place, as is true with many Kpop fans, including myself), but Duolingo is, first and foremost, for learning languages.

Btw, if you don't know the Korean lyrics of any of the Kpop songs you listen to, you can just search up the song name plus "English lyrics." I always do that and it's helped me like the song more after I knew the meaning. Although we all love Kpop, we CANT continue to fill the forum and comments with Kpop related comments.

June 19, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Laura_Inez

I think bringing K-pop groups up on Duolingo is fine, as long as it's still educational. As it turns out, one of the best ways to learn word pronunciation for a new language is to sing songs in that language. So some people talking about the song lyrics or pronunciations in a K-pop song is ok. But I totally understand what you mean by all the unrelated fan comments. I am of the Army, but, like you said, Duolingo is all about learning to speak in a way to which you aren't accustomed. I feel that other sites are better for talking about something you can discuss all the time in English! HOWEVER! Sometimes people will still accuse others of writing unrelated comments about K-pop, even when it is educational. I think it's important to distinguish was is reasonable, and what is unnecessary. Anyway, I agree with all the points you made in this post. Thanks for much-needed advice! :)

It seems like as time goes on - more and more anti and pro kpop comments are appearing. I know a lot of people hate kpop and a lot of people love kpop - but still. If you're checking duolingo chats/duolingo forum and you are an anti kpop person, you can just scroll past the kpop chats and act like they're not there. I do that with most chats that I don't like. most lol. Unless you have a habit to check every single chat every minute, than you're able to ignore the kpop chats. Humans are capable of doing so.

May 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/SoliDeoGloria00

I think the point of this is just to say that these forums are for learning languages. If someone is mentioning Kpop in a specific forum just to learn new words/grammar, then by all means, they can feel free to do so; however, when it turns into just constant fangirling, it becomes an off-topic issue. I personally love Kpop, but I know that this is not really the place to talk about that.

May 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Iron_Venema

We're not "anti kpop" though. It just doesn't have a place on this platform. Unless you're explaining the grammar which they use in the song with detailed explanations. And saying we should just skip the kpop posts, is just ignorant.

May 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/AnLxoP

Not everyone likes kpop, some even hate it. "Anti kpop comments" are appearing because you (or guys like you) crossed the line. You kinda make Duolingo into a kpop fanpage or something like that, and that is not what we, language learners, want Doulingo to be. I just want to tell you that's really annoying, like when people talk too much about Justin Bieber songs in Duolingo. By the way, I am not an anti kpop, I just don't want to see it appears too much here.

P/s : Though I am not a Korean learner, I still can understand that feeling ok.

Kpop would be more mainstream and normal if people wouldnt go so crazy over it. Most people can agree that pop or rap is an okay genre, even old people, but Kpop has a reputation for having crazy ass fans that sexualize and go over board on otherwise talented artist (They are good singers and dancers). Like chilax and dont be weird. You dont see people taking about despacito or shakira in the spanish forum or Drake and Cardi B in the English forum. Can't kpop people just calm down and do something else beside listening to music they can't even understand and honestly, those who say they hear kpop and learn korean are the weird people who [Americanize] culture and make it seem weird and nerdy.
