Arabic Word of the Day 36#
*γεια σας ! Today we're going to continue our food journey! [cheer] yesterday we started learning the names of some fruit and veg, so today we'll have a change of focus. Let's Eat!:
*Since yesterday was all about being vegetarian, which I reply "Is a big misteak"... Get the pun? ... No?... Nvm...;p .... today we'll start with being a carnivore! :
*So in Arabic the word for 'Meat' is "لحم" (Lah^m).
*دجاج = "Dajaaj" = Chickens (pl - we're not talking about a specific chicken so obviously we're going to use plural)
*غنم / خروف = "Kharoof / Ghanam" = (Both mean) Sheep - In English, we tend to say "lamb meat" even though actually the meat is of a sheep not a lamb (I mean killing a lamb for its meat is pointless as it wouldn't have much meat anyways - lol savage thoughts). However in Arabic, we call a chunk of meat what it is. So if it's actually 'sheep meat' we will say "Lah^m kharoof". If it was actual lamb meat then we'd say "Lah^m h^amal"; "h^amal" means 'lamb'.
*ماعز = "Maa3iz" = Goats
*لحم بقر = "Lah^m baq^ar" = Beef - So we know "lah^m" means 'meat' so "baq^ar" means "cows". So "lah^m baq^ar" is "cows' meat" or just 'beef'.
*لحم خنزير = "Lah^m khinzeer" = Pork - Now you probably won't find that in much Arabic stores or restaurants but hey! We can use this still. So as you've probably guessed "Khinzeer" means 'pig'. Oh and guess what? It is quite an insult to be called a pig (especially in Arabia) so I guess you've got another insult up your sleeves! :D Use it wisely!
*بط = "Bat^" = Ducks (hmm hmm not for eating! I've already had to change my profile pic because my co-worker tried to eat me!)
*أوز = "Iwaz" = Geese
*ديك رومي = "Deek roomee" = Turkey (as in the bird!!)
*So now, I think it's about time we tried to make a sentence! And while we do this, I must warn you that a few rules may pop out of their hiding place!
*Now let’s think. If I wanted to say, for example, "I eat chicken but I don't eat sheep meat ", what would I say? [take a guess before you continue reading]...
*I'd say this: "أنا أكل الدجاج لكن لا أكل لحم الغنم" = "Anaa akul aldajaaj lakin laa akul lah^m alghanam" = I eat chicken but I don't eat sheep meat.
*Now we already went through important verbs like "I eat" in one of the previous posts (post 22 I think). “I eat” is “Anaa akul” or just “Akul” (optional). So really, the only thing that we might’ve dropped on, is the use of “Al” before the nouns. Now “Al”, as we already know, means ‘the’. Whenever you ever see “al” at the beginning of a word, you should instantly know that it means “the …”
*So technically, when we say the example above^, we are in fact saying “I eat the chickens but I don’t eat the sheep meat”. In English, we tend to say “I eat chicken” about a group of chickens even though there is a plural form but we decide not to use it for some reason. When we say “I eat chicken”, we are talking about chickens in general. It’s not like we eat a certain chicken. In the Arabic translation we are adding ‘the’ before the nouns. But this doesn’t make sense in English because we are talking in general, not specifically. However, in the Arabic, we know they are in plural form so we know that it isn’t about a chicken, it’s just about chickens.
*So in short: Whenever you use a noun in Arabic you must add “Al” before the noun unless it belongs to someone! (If you need an explanation in basic English, comment below and I’ll try to explain that again)
*So let’s do more practice, here’s some more examples bringing in some of yesterday’s knowledge:
*لا أكل اللحم لكن أكل الفواكه والخضروات = "Laa akul al'lah^m lakin akul alfawaakih wa alkhudrawaat" = I don't eat meat but I eat fruit and vegetables
*أنا أكل البطيخ = "Anaa akul albit^eekh" = I eat watermelon
*أنا لا أكل لحم البط أو الفطر = "Anaa laa akul lah^m albat^ aw alfut^r" = I don't eat duck meat or mushrooms! (this is for my co-worker btw ;p)
*Thanks for Reading (I know it was quite long)! Any Qs, Proof-reading, Suggestions, Possible Improvements, I will be trying to find a better pun to crack next time ;p JK Did you guys seriously not get it?! [sigh] Have a Nice Evening! ;D
That's because of Sousou! She was trying to eat me because I was a mushroom so I changed to a duck ;p Like it?
قليلا لأنني صائمة <- It should be like this. Almost flawless! ;p Don't forget that "لأنني" means "because I am", so you shouldn't add "I" after since it is already in "لأنني". Also "صائم " means "fasting", but it has become an adjective in this sentence so it has a gender. You are a girl (right?) so it should be صائمة .
!أنا صائمة أيضا لكن لم أشعر بالجوع بعد :) رمضان كريم
أمامي قطعة لذيذة من الحلوى، لكنني لا أريدها، أريد فطرا أو بطة لآكلها ^^
Thank you again for the posts!
I get the pun “misteak LOL. I don’t know if I missed it, but was the word for fish (the meat) on here?
I almost didn’t see your post due to your new profile picture, I am so used to a mushroom teaching me Arabic LOL
Ah Lol I knew you'd get it XD Nope fish wasn't on there I forgot to put it on then I couldn't be asked so I decided not to add it as some vegetarians say that fish isn't meat apparently so I took that as an excuse to leave it for the next part of our food journey ;p You are a mind reader, that's why you copy me in everything! XD
Ps: When did you start teaching yourself the piano? :o
Oh and also Andres:4, Sousou Savage Co-worker: 1
Well...I started piano as a young child, but then had to quit because my sister was born and had a lot of complications for a few months (she almost didn’t make it, she had a hole in her lung and a lot of other things.)
So then I obviously had to quit for a while and just never picked it back up until a year ago. I had forgotten everything except Mary Had A Little Lamb, so I have been doing a lot of self-teaching.
Hehe looks like I'm copying you lol I only started less than a year ago :) Well we did some at school so if I count that then two years ago. But since we've started last year at the same level of profession, we could say we started at the same time! ;p How good are you at the moment? like from 0 - 10 ? I'd say I'm at 2 tbh I want to see if I'm the only one taking forever to progress ;P Maybe I shouldn't compare myself to a genius :D
Hmm I noticed a spelling mistake Andres! Is it your auto correcting thing again? Lol XD
I am probably on level 1 and a half - 2 LOL (The most advanced song I can play is Rise Up by Andra Day. The Piano is hard, my main focus is violin on though.
Yep, it probably was auto-spell. LOL
No, LOL if you play that song and my most advanced song is Rise Up, I assure you that you are better than me.
:O I'm gonna check that song, I bet it's complex, you probably need like 4 hands to do it! ;p
Hi Eliein, I’m glad you liked the song! It seems like a really hard song to play, but if you take it piece by piece (like playing the chords, then the next day do other layers) it will be really easy then.
I use YouTube to help teach me everything LOL.
Hmm...I really don’t know any individual channel. I just look up whatever song I want and will just watch the tutorial from there. (If I think of any I’lol let you know) I have a keyboard as well.
Eliein, PGN Piano is a pretty good YT Channel for learning piano songs. I used it as well as random other ones :) It's quite helpful because the guy goes through the notes slowly and puts the sheet music on the screen too (I use keyboard btw). Hope that helps! :D
Edit: And HD Piano as well!
0:05 "I can handle it! It's not too haaa.... NVM"
You're not a 1.5 Andres! You're a 4 yeah? ;p Or maybe I'm just a 0.5? The best song I can play is River Flows in You (it sounds complex but you can probably play it with your eyes closed)
No...I can assure you I am not that great on the piano,
I can play River Flows... on my violin but definitely not the keyboard! (That is a very hard song) I think you might be the 4 and I am the .05 LOL
You even admitted yourself Andres! you wrote .05 hah lol ok then I'm 4 and you're 5 fair enough! ;p
Are you ok Andres! Rise Up is harder! it's also MUCH longer and it's got harder chords! there's not one chord in River Flows that is two fingers at the same time, let alone three! Aah Andres, Andres! ;p
