Czech, not just a language.
I have found that, Czech is something more to me than just a language. After leaving in the Czech Rep. for a couple of years, I think that I have a special bond with the language, but also with the people and the country.
I have spent an amazing time there, walking through Prague during the night, or going for a walk to the Jesenické Hory. The Czech R. is where my love for languages really flourished, it's where I learnt how to do the swimming that has given so many opportunities, it's where I met people worth remembering.
Now, when learning and practicing Czech on Duolingo, I always feel something inside me, something to which I have dedicated a poem (I had already written the first part a long time ago):
What is old,
can be gold.
I was once told,
are the finest gold.
When they come to mind,
they make you rewind to times,
they make you remind of things,
are simply a treasure to refind.
The poem is basically dedicated to the amazing 2 years I lived with Czech and Czechs, in first person.
--> I now take the time to thank the Czech contributors for giving me such a great time whenever I log in here :)
P.S: the poem is mine, which means it is copyrighted.
Czech is beautiful.. I have been learning it very loosely (I think that is the term I would use) for a year or two and I never seem to get sick of it. Czech has me coming back for more after every lesson. It isn't just a language, I completely agree with you. It's really something else. That poem is very nice, I wish I could write that well!
Well not only do I reside in the Czech but my spouse is a native as are my children. Yet still I struggle with the language. My German (I use to also reside in Germany) is far better and far easier for me to learn. My goal in learning Czech is to at the least be able to converse with a 6 yo.
I think that your goal is fair enough, considering the difficulties the language has. I personally think that you should step-up your goal a little, since talking to a 6 yo might be easier than you think, since children are really, really comprehensive.
I think that, with your capacity you will meet your goal too soon. Try making it "to at the least be able to have a nice talk with the the kind old lady next door". I think that it will be worth your time :)
Thanks! No need to envy. All places have good and bad things, you just have to appreciate the good things wherever you go.
