If you're comparing ages, can बूढ़ा / बूढ़ी / बूढ़े also be used? Or does it have to be बड़ा / बड़ी / बड़े ?

No. बूढ़ा is 'elderly'/'aged' and refers to an old person by default. It is also not used in comparisons.
Eg: मैं बूढ़ा दिखता हूँ पर तुमसे सिर्फ़ एक साल बड़ा हूँ (I look old but I'm only a year older than you).

Note: बूढ़ा is not always polite even when talking about an old person. बुज़ुर्ग is a more polite alternative.
