Romanian grammar doubt: Possessives

My horse is fast, yours is beautiful.

Calul meu este rapid al tau este frumos.

Why can't it be mea and ta?

The word "cal" is masculine, so you must use masculine determiners and pronouns: "un cal" (a horse), "calul" (the horse), "calul meu" (my horse), "calul tău" (your horse), "al meu" (mine), "al tău" (yours), etc.

Words like "mea" and "ta" are used with feminine nouns: "o casă" (a house), "casa" (the house), "casa mea" (my house), "casa ta" (your house), "a mea" (mine), "a ta" (yours), etc.

Simply because horse is masculine. Un cal, calul meu. Had it been cat mea would have worked. O pisică, pisica mea.
