Writing in your target language, June 2019

Writing in your target language is probably the most efficient way to progress in this language. So, why won't you give it a try? Just be creative and write a story in a/the/some language(s) you're learning. And don't hesitate to correct other people's text.

Firstly, I would like to say the idea comes from Maughanster_, but since he's not active anymore, I am going to take this event back.

You can find the last "Write in your target language" here

Here are a few rules :

  • Write in a language you're learning, not your native language.
  • Please say at the beginning of your comment in which language you write.
  • Follow the prompt (You'll find it at the end of my post)
  • Be willing to accept feedback and don't be rude to anyone.
  • Please, no google translate, we are not here to find google translation's mistakes
  • And most importantly, have fun !

To summarize : Write in your target language and correct other people's mistake. If you all do that, we'll all reach a better level in the tongue we're learning, which is, at least I think, our goal.

Please upvote, so everyone could have a chance to see this post and try it !

June's prompt is : Food

Write, correct and have fun !

Español-Spanish:

la manzana es roja,

la banana es amarilla,

yo tengo hambre,

necesito comida ahora.

lo siento, I don't think I'm capable of writing a short story yet. I might try & if I will, I'll post it here, but I doubt it. Sorry for disappointing you ;v; GL! :D

Yo digo que tu español esta bien! I'm sure if you continue you'd be able to succeed. Some places do say "banana", but I usually say "Platano", when I talk about bananas. Keep it up, ánimo!!

You could also say cambur for bananas. You just have to pick up how people in the area say it and voila. Good luck.

The truth is...

..I don't even like bananas ;v; xD

Thanks so much for the corrections! I think I'd say banana because people probably know it from English if not from their area... I'd just say it in a tone of "Mi hermano quiere una, eh, banana(?)" Problem solved ;D

this was an hilarious read, awesome job! my attempt at correction * fellow beginner here XD* ... "ahora que soy hambre, necisito comida" I rephrased it from the original "i have hunger"to "now that í'm hungry" as i felt the poem flowed better in this way.

side note: was that even a correction?! lol

June 2, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MopasMipy

I appreciate it! xD But I've heard "i'm hungry"= "*tengo* hambre", just like "tengo frío" and so on. It does sound weird & I was surprised when I was told that! :0

I've just searched a video that could explain this and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtGbre_yVf4 seems fitting :)

GL with your Spanish! :D

June 2, 2019

Hola, if you say "soy hambre" is like if you were saying "I'm hunger", the correct way as MopasMipy mentioned is "tengo hambre", which means "I'm hungry". PS- I'm a native Spanish speaker ;) Good luck!

Me gusta tu historia. Te inspiraste. (I hope I got that right. It should mean you inspired me.)

June 2, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/I-Love-2-Learn

Actually, you would say something more like "Me gusta tú historia, me inspiró." , that means "I like your story,it inspired me." . I'm not sure the word "inspiraste" exists, that's why I changed the sentence. And if it did, what you said would mean "you inspired yourself." , but good job!

June 2, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Edelweisszh

Hola, "inspiraste" actually exists, what Shereen said "Te inspiraste" means something like "you got inspired" (talking to someone else), I would use it like : "Te inspiraste haciendo el pastel", "you got inspired making the cake". If you wanted to say (talking about yourself) that you got inspired, you would say "Me inspiré", you would say something like "Hoy me inspiré pintando flores", which would mean something like, "Today I got inspired painting flowers". Me inspiré ( I ), Te inspiraste (You), Se inspiró (He, She)... I think this is way too advanced though so don't worry if you don't understand me much, you did a great job. I'm a native speaker and it was hard to even find the words in English to explain to you.

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/I-Love-2-Learn

Oh yeah, thanks! And yeah, I understand. It is very difficult to explain Spanish (or any language for that matter) through English. Ha, now that you mention it I have heard people use it in that way, it had completely slipped my mind. I consider myself semi-fluent in Spanish, so I try to help people out in more obvious mistakes as well as I can (hoping someone like you will fully and better explain) and I also continue learning Spanish myself. My mom is Hispanic, and that's how I know Spanish, but I'm not a very good speaker.

June 3, 2019

June 1, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/14_Sebastien

En français, ça s'appelle des rouleaux de printemps (Spring rolls litteraly)

June 1, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/angus390025

Ah, bien.

Mi historia es en español y no es real (My story is in Spanish and it is not real)

[También podría decir: "Nunca volveré a ese restaurante" literalmente: "I will never return to this restaurant"]

I found one error in your text that is pretty hard to notice. You should never say "Cuando conocí a la camarera ella no estaba muy amable", but rather "Conocí a la camarera y ella no fue muy amable", because if you wanted to use "Cuando" you should say something like "Cuando conoci a la camarera ella no fue muy amable conmigo". Also I just noticed that at the end you wrote "¡Nunca voy a ese restaurante...", the correct way to write this is "¡Nunca iré a ese restaurante...". Keep learning! :D

Couple of corrections here, the first being that arano did not follow the prompt. That is for seasons and not food! I think you may have mixed up the previous topic with this one. Secondly, "ありがとう" is "Arigato" in Romaji which means "Thank you." I believe you were actually trying to express apology Sebastien which would be "ごめんなさい" or rather Gomen'nasai. Happy learning. :)

Pretty good, just a few things.

Una bottiglia DI vino rosso (a bottle OF red wine)

As a stylistic point, you don't need to say 'io' so often since the verb tells us that it's you. It's not wrong, just sounds repetitive; "taglio le carote" is fine.

Buon appetito anche a te!

Great text - made think back to learning Italian at high school, too! I found two minor expressions you'd maybe want to reconsider: First of all, in l.1 I think you would want to use the plural form "Cipolle" instead of "Cipolla" or use an indefinite article "una cipolla" (might have been a typo, too). Normally all nouns require an article, unless indefinite plural forms. So a singular noun can never be without article. In the last line, it sounds better for me to say "una bottiglia di vino rosso". Its the same system as "della verdura" above.

However - Incredible text! I really enjoyed reading it!

Buon appetito!

There is an owl. The owl is called Duo. Other owls are brown or white but Duo is green! Today Duo is hungry. He is very hungry. In the morning he walks to the shop. In the shop, he buys food. He buys a lot of food. Then he walks home. At home, he eats his food and drinks some water. He doesn't drink coffee. Now Duo isn't hungry. He has a nap.

Pretty much describes my morning routine. :P

Is there still the correctors thing?

I can correct English, Afrikaans, and Haitian Creole.

Anyways, here is an Italian story (that somehow turned into a rhyme):

Mi piace il cibo,

Onestamente, chi no?

Ma quando ne chiedo,

Tutti dicono no.

Voglio una banana,

Una mela, una pesca,

Ma quello che voglio,

È una bottiglia d'acqua

Ho fame, ma ho anche sete,

Posso chiedere ora,

Posso avere del cibo o dell'acqua?

Before I did this, though, I have to admit to cheating.

I searched up the translation for honestly (onestamente) so I can't take full credit for my work. I enjoy rhyming, though (especially when, in Italian, words usually end in O or A, so I getting rhyming words is easy).

Hi, I don't think I am gonna keep this corrector thing, I found it pretty useless. I prefer that the people just correct other peopl when they see the texts. But thank you if you correct other people, it'll be great!

Sounds delicious, but just a friendly reminder to watch out for gender and number agreement in Spanish! (You have 2 words that should be feminine and/or plural.)

(I'm no native speaker so I can't say it's wrong necessarily...) Just to my ear, I think it might sound better to pull el café and el agua out of the comer list, since you beber those.

June 1, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mark841597

It is very good! Two things:

1) One wouldn't use 'opwarmend' in this context. Probably one would say "je krijgt het er (lekker) warm van". Adding "lekker" adds to the positive vibe of the warming ;-)

2) "Laat me weten of ik het goed schrijf", without the t. But better yet use the present perfect: "Laat me weten of ik het goed heb geschreven".

Btw... I don't like hutspot.

Swedish-Svenska :

Jag tycker om glass, eftersom det är det bästa mat vi kan äta. Man kan inte äta glass för en mältid, men jag tycker det!

June 1, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Elinand

You must write "den bästa maten", and en to mat to indicate that you are talking about the ice cream, and as mat becomes mat_en_, it must be de_n_, with an N.

Change the vi to "man", which in english becomes "one can". Bästa maten man kan äta.

The second sentence sounds a bit weird to me, like you are stating that one can't eat ice cream for a meal, like a fact. And then you say that you don't believe it after saying that it's a fact, gives away the wrong vibes. I'd rather say something like this "Glass kan vara vilken måltid som helst, dock tycker alla inte likadant som jag gör" - Ice cream can be any meal, although not everybody thinks the same as I do. Or if you would like a more advanced option ;) "Glass kan ätas till frukost, lunch, middag och kvällsmat, det finns inga begränsningar. Det är bara fantasin som sätter gränserna. Vissa tycker kanske att glass bara är en dessert, fast jag tycker inte vi ska ha för lite av det goda och unna oss det när vi än känner för det." - Icecream can be eaten at breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper, there are no restrictions. Only imagination can put up boundaries. Some people might think ice cream is only for dessert, but i think we should have too little of the scrumtious and eat it whenever we feel like.

Hope that was somewhat useful ;)

Förresten mint- och chocoklad -glass är den bästa :P

June 2, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kriseaf

Great job and very funny! It's an incredibly impressive mini-story!

Just a few suggestions, though, if you want them. 非常 should go before the verb (or adj, if no verb). Also, I'm not a native speaker, so I don't know the nuances, but I think it's supposed to be 沒病 instead of 不病了.

I got a bit confused when you said he was tall--was that your intended word? 和 is never used to connect sentences, but you can use 还有 (hai2you3) instead to connect sentences sometimes. In this case, though, I think you're looking for 也 (ye3), as in 他也很高.

你吃什么? brings up an awesome cultural opportunity! You can swap it out with 你吃飯了嗎? ("Have you eaten yet?"--sorry, my keyboard is in traditional, Google Translate can swap those characters for you if you need) which is a standard Chinese greeting between friends!

Did you mean 雖然 (sui1ran2)...但是...? I've never seen 所以 and 但是 used in a sentence together before.

Also, a fun question particle is 呢 (ne)--我? can be 我呢? which translates more to "And me?" with a reciprocal-ish connotation. Plus wo3 will always be wo3 and the question mark couldn't be verbalized through tone without a question particle.

Fantastic job, though! The story is really fun and I think the humor came across really well. :D

June 2, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/_MingYue_

Thank you!! I was taught that 所以 means so, and 但是 can be used as but. I've probably used them in the wrong places as I did with 和- its only for nouns i think, i used the wrong 'and' haha. I thought about using 我呢 but I wasn't sure- glad to know that I can!

June 2, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kriseaf

Haha, I love 呢 for some reason and try to find as many opportunities as possible to use it. :P It feels really Japanese to me, for some reason.

"所以...但是..." might be totally correct, I don't know for sure. I was just remembering two different structures I learned: "所以...因為..." and "雖然...但是..." and wondered if maybe you'd shuffled them by accident.

Great job, though! <3

In this case, there is no accent, so it's fine! Just to make sure you wrote what you meant: when you say "Eu te amo comida" you mean "I love you, food" like if you were talking to the food, and not "I love food", right? It's a funny thing to say but it works! I'd say that to my food too haha :)

The past participle change with the subject when it is with the "être" auxliary and don't change with the "avoir" one. But, if the object is "direct" (it usually means that you don't have a preposition to introduce it) and if it is before the verb, it also changes. (I hope you understood ^^')

And for "j'ai été", I can't really explain it. It actually is corrct like you put it, but I would rather use "j'étais" in this case. I don't know if there's a rule. But in this case "j'ai été" would mean "one time I was angry at him" and "j'étais" would be at this specific moment. I hope I helped you! Bonne chance pour ton examen jeudi !

A few minor comments: 住んでました is a spoken form. 住んでいました is the written form. I think the name of the 店 is 赤福, and the name of the product is 赤福餅 (according to Japanese Wikipedia, https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/赤福餅), so be careful when you follow ...店があります with 赤福餅です and 赤福餅のもち. From your sentence, I thought the name of the shop was 赤福餅, which would be an odd name. In both cases, drop the 餅. As for 一日, unless you attach ふりがな showing that you want those characters read as ついたち, it's too easily read as いちにち, the meaning of which is "one day", not "the first of the month". Maybe 月の一日 would be clearer for the first place you used 一日. In the question about whether it tastes good, there's a missing い. It should be おいしいですか? The tone in わからない is abrupt. Since everything else was です/-ます form, seeing plain form there was startling. Perhaps you intended it that way, and it's grammatically fine -- just startling. Finally, 今に means "soon", not "now". Putting a comma instead of に would make more sense. Thanks for the tip about the shop! Next time I'm in 伊勢市 I'll look the place up.

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kriseaf

Awesome feedback, thank you!! I'm not surprised that I missed a bunch of (what feel to me to be little) sounds in a couple of the words, my Japanese-learning was half aural and half formal book teachings--I would usually say わからない, it never occurred to me that it wouldn't fit in with the ますs in writing. TIL!

You're totally right though, I just double-checked and the shop is only 赤福. >.< Now I kind of want to count how many times I managed to fit some version of the word もち in just a few sentences, haha! I do 100% recommend their standard mochi, though, if you can't/don't want to line up at 4:30AM on the first of the month for their limited edition mochis. It's absolutely delish.

Thank you! <3

Avec les boulettes de viande on mange de la confiture d'airelles, et ça c'est vraiment bien. Pendant une de nos fêtes on mange des écrevisses, je les aime. On mange aussi du pain croustillant. Souvent avec du beurre, et si tu veux tu peux prendre du "Kaviar". Quelque chose que beacoup de personnes trouve dégoûtant, c'est du herrang fermenté. On le mange en noël, en Pâques, et en "midsommar".

'Ho voluto' suggests you wanted to for a short while and then stopped wanting to. Try "Volevo studiare italiano".

'opzione' is for stock options. Try 'non era possibile' instead.

Umm, whose 腹 are you talking about? If it's your own, I suspect that お腹 is a bit honorific even for that precious organ. Also, isn't it "おいしいけど"? I don't think one would ever say "おいしいだ".

おなか お腹 should be correct also the Kanji... I never heard onaka without the suffix.

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JiPxB

Sorry, my bad. I was unfamiliar with お腹 being read as おなか. Since one can say 腹(はら)が空いている to mean the same thing, I jumped to the conclusion that お腹 was meant as おはら . The 電子辞書 I use doesn't have なか as a reading for 腹 and no entry in the 和英辞典 for おなか; and the 広辞苑 lists only 御中 as an entry for おなか (with the third note under that entry saying "(主として女性と子供が使う)腹") . But I see that お腹 comes up in Microsoft's IME and the iPhone app "Imiwa?" (and Google Translate, for that matter) when おなか is entered, so it must be a recognized reading.

Here are some things that I would change: "La comida plastica con que jugaba" to "la comida de plastico con qual jugaba." "la habia probado" to "Lo habia probado" "que nunca probaba" to "Que jamás habia probado" "Nunca imaginaba" to "nunca se imaginó" "No era nada especial" to "era nada especial" " Departmiento " to "departamento" "Edificios fueran" to "edificios eran" "Fuera la misma" to "era la misma" (maybe) "Tantos meses atrás" to "tantos meses antes." That's what I noticed. Great story!!!

The problem is that I don't know what you mean by that... "I have bread and milk for someone in my family?" Maybe you could replace the verb "tenho" with "comer" (eat) and "beber" (drink). Changing the preposition "por" would also help the sentence to make sense. Maybe "com alguém da minha família" (literally "with someone from my family"). This is how I would write it: "eu como pão e bebo leite com alguém da minha família". Hope it helps!

-I would use "Zum Frühstück" instead of "Für Frühstück", same for *Mittagessen and Abendessen. (Don't forget the capitalization)

-It is not neccessary to say "die Nudeln" in this context, you can just say: "Zum Mittagessen esse ich Nudeln".

No problem! I can translate it for you. Mango, watermelon, orange, etc are FRUTAS (fruits), but we use the word FRUTOS do mar (seafood / shellfish) for things like shrimp or crab, for example. "Mar" means "sea".

Don't be so hard on yourself! haha FRUTOS DO MAR is just an expression that we use to refer to food that comes from the sea (shellfish). Besides that, the word FRUTOS is used very rarely. How long have you been studying? People say to learn “only” 10 new verbs a day. I haven’t learned 10 new verbs in 4.8 years yet. I don’t understand how to learn words without translating to English. English from English To be honest, I never really liked to eat in my whole 16 years of life, so I have much to talk about. I always saw food as something we consume to survive with the amount that is just enough. So I've always stayed out of the zone when it's was anything about food. But, seeing people have a casual conversation while eating got me motivated quite a bit, so I started to eat more just so that I could talk with my family and friends longer than I normaly do. Ugh, my mother just told me to stop wasting my time on the computer so I guess I'll end it here. I really wanted to say more though...ㅠ

You wrote “Eu gosto muito” why isn’t there a “de” after “gosto”? Everyone has told me there is always a “de” after “gosto”. I don’t understand why but I noticed it was missing. I’m guessing it’s another exception to the rule. I can’t seem to understand Portuguese. The more I study the more confused I get . Thanks a lot!

June 2, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AlineS_25

You're right! We use "de" after "gosto". For example: eu gosto muito de chocolate. In the text, there is nothing after "eu gosto muito" because the information is implicit. We can understand that it means "eu gosto muito de estudar português" because it is in the previous sentence. It would be repetitive if we said "eu estudo português e eu gosto muito de estudar português".

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Pat214197

Só what I was told was incorrect, interesting. Something else that has changed since I first learned it. When I see “de” after “gosto” I don’t know what to say while reading my translations to English. “I like of “ or maybe I should ignore it. You can translate, but the translation "word by word" isn't always possible and this is an example. In English we say "I like chocolate" but in Portuguese we say "Eu gosto DE chocolate". In this specific example, we can't translate the preposition "de", because it's not used in English.

Só how should I think of words like “De”? Should I ignore it or should I think of it in another way? I think the only Portuguêse that I understand are the words that translate perfectly to English. I need to discover another way to learn. Even simple things like “Eu te amo” were difficult to learn because it looked like “I you love” Thanks a lot!

I teach Portuguese in Brazil for foreign students so I'm glad to help you. The word "de" can be translated in different ways. Two examples. 1) From: "Eu sou do Brasil" or "Eu venho do Brasil" means "I'm from Brazil". In these examples, the translation is "from". 2) By: If someone asked you "How did you get here?" you could answer "I came by car". In Portuguese, the answer would be "Eu vim de carro". That's because we use "de" before means of transport.

“De” and “do” are the same? I thought “Do” was “De+o”. I always say “Of the” when I see it. I can’t even understand the last two phrases you wrote. The “V” verbs are difficult to learn and remember for me . “Vai vão vem vir ver vou vim venho” Most verbs are difficult to understand for me. One word is difficult to remember but when there are 25 near identical words it seems almost impossible to me. I have never heard of the verb “to be”. I had only known “is, are, am”. I’ll keep trying. Thanks a lot for the help!

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AlineS_25

That's right, "do" is the preposition "de" + article "o". "Brasil" is a masculine noun so we use the masculine article before it. "VIM" is the past simple of the verb "vir" (to come) conjugated with the pronoun "eu" = "eu vim" (I came). "VENHO" is the verb "vir" in the simple present conjugated with the pronoun "eu" = "eu venho" (I come). "VÃO" is used with the pronoun "eles" (they). For example: they go to work by car = eles vão trabalhar de carro. I imagine that it must be difficult, since English verbs don't change as much...

Autrefois(although completely correct, this is more used in a literary/historical sense to mean "once upon a time", I would just use "un jour" ou "l'autre jour", very common in oral use), Stella et ses parents sont allés au restaurant chinois. De nos jours (this also has kind of a historical feel, I assumed you want to translate "nowadays"? I would just use "aujourd'hui", to be honest), Stella croit que le restaurant etait trop nul mais son frère pense qu'il veut aller au restaurant chinois...
Reading people's amazing efforts to write in french makes me realise how hard and nonsensical my mother tongue can be.... you did a great job! Your use of "en fin de compte" was perfect. Bonne journée ! :)

Okay so I had to google ‘story’, but other than that, this is all me. :-)

''Me te quiero mama.''

June 2, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/I-Love-2-Learn

" piensa sobre hablando hola" to "Piensa en decir hola"

What you said: (She) ponders talking hello--- Fixed version: (she) ponders saying hello

"Cociendo la cena" to "Cocinando la cena"

What you said: Sewing dinner--- Fixed version: Cooking dinner

"Hoy vi un" to "hoy vi a un" (hard to explain why yours isn't used, but it isn't)

"No dije hola" to "no le dije hola" (Another hard to explain one)

"Yo deseo lo hacer" to " Yo deseo hacerlo" What you said: ? --- Fixed version: I long(or wish) to do so

"Su madre se llama" to " Su madre la llama"

What you said: Her mom calls herself or her mom is called ( her name) --- Fixed version: Her mom calls her

"La cena es finita!" To " la cena está lista! "

What you said: ? (Well, it's kind of like saying the dinner is no more)--- Fixed version: Dinner is ready

"Vengo!" To " ya vengo! " or " ahí voy! " (not wrong, but my suggestions are more commonly used in a spanish-speaking household)

"Lena se llama" to " Lena grita" or "Lena llama"

What you said: Lena calls herself ( a trend in this family)--- Fixed version: Lena yells or Lena calls

"Se sentarse en la silla" to " Se sienta en la silla" or better yet "se sienta en la mesa"

What you said: ??? --- Fixed version: (She) sits in the chair or (She) sits at the table

"Y rie" that means to laugh, if you meant to say (not sure if you did) "and smiles" then it's "y sonríe"

" Me te quiero mama" to " Te quiero mama" and even sweeter "te amo mama"

What you said:?????? no idea.--- Fixed version: hard to translate to english but it's basically saying "I love you mom" or "I really care about you mom" I'm not making fun of you, but I wanted to correct you in a way where you can laugh at your mistakes! Nice story!

Sehr gut geschrieben! This was a really nice story to read :). I’ve “corrected” what I can and have put notes around so you know where I’m coming from. Have a lingot as well!

Corrections:

Ich lerne Deutsch!

Zum Frühstück esse ich (verb comes second) Jogurt (you don’t need the article) mit Nüssen und Marmelade (interesting mix xD). Zu Mittag (sounds more natural here) esse ich nichts, weil ich mit meinen Freunden (careful with endings here because they change depending on the gender and amount of people you’re going out with) in die Stadt gehe („weil“ sends the verb to the end and eventhough you’re talking about a group of people; the verb is conjugated with „ich“). Zum Abendessen esse (verb second again, and „habe“ doesn’t make sense in this context) ich Salat, Pilze und Fleisch. Ich trinke auch einen („Apfelwein“ is masculine and accusative here) Apfelwein. Mein Lieblingsessen ist Käse (no article again), obwohl ich Eis ebenfalls mag (verb to the end).

Zum Frühstück esse ich....mit Nüssen (Dativ) .....

Zu Mittag (I don't now why, but to me as a native speaker that sounds correct / written and the other one like incorrect but often used / dialect) ........

mit meinen Freunden (Dativ)

in die (feminin) Stadt gehe ...

Pilze (Plural required because it is a countable noun)...

I'm a beginner in Chinese. I wrote something with a food (peach) and tried to translate it as well as I could to Chinese. Here's the original for reference: I hear the songs of birds and look out my window, I see them perched atop the peach tree. I see the lovely pink peaches and long to have a bite of the delicious fruit-- but it is too far for me to reach. I wish that I too, had wings. And here's my attempted translation: 我 听歌 的鸟 和 出 我的 窗子 看 。我 看 有 再 桃树。我 看 可爱的 粉红的 桃 和 盼望 想 有 吃 的 好吃 水果, 但是 我 不 到达,很远。我 想要 也 有 翅膀。 Please tell me what is wrong and why. And is there anything right? June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JiPxB

いろいろ must be followed by な since it's an adjective modifying 食べ物. たくさん is out of place and probably should be dropped unless you want to emphasize that you ate LOTS of a variety of things (which isn't in the English version). If you do include たくさん, put it right before 食べました. If you meant you ate a very large variety of things (rather than large amounts of a variety of things), perhaps you could use 非常に as a modifier, but it's really not needed and actually sounds a bit strange. Also, rather than 全部, you probably meant 全く. Rather than disliking all parts (全部) of the うに, you found it completely (全く) おいしくない. (Of course, if you did eat all parts of the uni, including the spines, it's completely understandable that you didn't find it to be delicious!) As for the verbs, centrente is right that you should use the continuative form 行って before the comma. I just assumed that the comma was a typo and you meant to put a period there. If it wasn't a typo, you should use the plain form 行って rather than 行きまして. One would think that if polite is good more polite is better, but one can actually get too polite in Japanese and it sounds excessive. For some reason the second instance of polite form in the middle of a sentence (X mo Y mo Z mo 食べましたが) doesn't stick out quite so much but I don't know why. Btw, I completely understand your dislike of うに but urge you to give it another chance. I used to hate the stuff too, because of the iodine smell and taste, but found that if you get really fresh うに it can be creamy and subtle without the stink. You really have to trust the establishment to have fresh stuff, though.

Thanks for your correction! I had forgotten about the な even though I've been taught that quite a few times in class.

As for the て-form, I had thought that て would turn it into "and then" rather than just "and" (I ate ramen in the international airport on one of the stop before Japan and it was surprisingly quite good).

As for the second polite form, I forget the actual reason, but I was taught that it was normal to do polite form before the first が even when talking casually (the actual ending before the period would be だよ or whatever other ending that is appropriate). Is it so?

雲丹は、分かりましたが食べるの場所は築地でした。築地の魚は新鮮べきだね。

June 4, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JiPxB

Interesting comment about the -て form, but I think it might have been presented to you a little more narrowly than it perhaps could have been. Yes, there has to be a temporal connection between the clause before the ーて form and the clause after it, but it doesn't necessarily have to be translated by "and then". In your first sentence, you went to Japan, and (then, not before) you ate a variety of foods there. In your English example above, you'd probably have to make the subject of both clauses the same by adding the Japanese equivalent of "I thought". "I ate ramen... and (then) thought it was surprisingly good." It's continuing action by the same subject that is expressed by the ーて form.

That's also an interesting rule about using polite form before the first が. I haven't heard such a rule but if I remember to, I'll ask a native speaker about it one of these days. As I said, it didn't look as awkward as "行きまして" but I really don't know why. (I was thinking after yesterday's post about why 行きまして looks so odd, and realized that I might never have seen it before. Continuative form is always in the middle of a sentence, and verbs in the middle of a sentence are always plain form (except in extremely, almost obsequiously polite situations where 行く is unlikely to be used), so maybe that's why it stuck out.)

築地でうにをたべた?あそこの海鮮(かいせん)は新鮮(しんせん)なはずだ。(Not sure if you've learned はず yet, but it expresses "is expected to be/should be" in this situation. べき conveys a more moral, duty-related version of "should" and I don't think it can be used with adjectives directly. If you wanted to say to a fishmonger that he has a responsibility to supply fresh fish, you might be able to say something like この店の魚は新鮮であるべきだ。but for plain expectations with no implications of responsibility, use はず. ) And if you'll pardon one last suggestion, perhaps you should have written ... 雲丹を食べた場所は築地です。

My Japanese level is probably too low to correct you but I'm pretty sure that to connect two sentences, the first clause should use the て-form? Like so :

But great job, I feel like everything else is spot-on!

I'm not a native speaker, but here are a few thoughts: Unless you're trying to emphasize that きのう is the important part of the sentence, you can (and should) leave out the は and just put a comma there. Also, ”食べ物を” (not が) since it's the direct object of 買いました. The first instance of いっぱい can't be used though it's hard to explain why: いっぱい implies (vaguely and not literally) that the volume of something was filled up. Here you just mean that you bought lots of food, so 安い食べ物をたくさん買いました conveys what you intended. In the second instance, you can say いっぱいあります but not いっぱい食べ物があります。I think it's because いっぱい is not an い-adjective, but closer to a noun (though you can never follow it with は or が). Finally, the の after 全て makes 全て an adjective, so it can't be used here where the verb is です. (The sentence would mean "All junk food is".) 全てジャンクフードです is grammatically correct. Overall, the meaning of your sentences came through, and the use of おくりがな was perfect.

下个早上我起床了、洗浴了、刷牙了。我下楼的时候、我嘴巴上有了跟蛋糕糖衣一样的色。虽然我从不吃太多糖、我但是妈妈见我的时候、她觉得我吃完了蛋糕。那个时候钟我们的猫头鹰到我们飞了。它的嘴巴和鼻子上还有了很多蛋糕。我跟妈妈还是为那个早上笑。

I think you need to practice a little with verbs. If there are multiple actors it usually ends in ..-en, but with only one it does not

Ik loop

jij loopt

hij/zij/het loopt

wij lopen

jullie lopen

zij lopen

vel -> val.

"Ik heb honger!" zegt de schildpad. De schildpad loopt en loopt. Een appel valt op zijn kop. "Een appel? Lekker!" zegt de schildpad. Hij/Zij eet de appel. Hij/Zij is gelukkig!

nice little story, complete delight from a simple apple.

Scrivo nell'italiano.

Shall we/I try Russian?

Я видел забавную вещь.

Троллейбус поворачивал. Но машина пыталась обойти троллейбус. Итак, Троллейбус застряла на боку машины. И машина не могла идти вперед.

Наконец машина отступила. И Троллейбус может уйти.

Whew! Even with help that was difficult. And it was funnier to watch. I guess not so funny to read unless you let your imagination go wild.

It was a warm day. And it was rush hour. It was noisy. And the lady in the car would not move. I guess she panicked. And the bus had a block of cars behind it.

Thanks for reading/reviewing my bad Russian.

Estar aburrido means one feels bored. Ser aburrido means something/someone is boring. *I would personally write "Me encanta comer..." or "Á menudo como..." "Comí un plátano hoy" would be the correct conjugation in past simple, but usually spanish speakers use present perfect for things they did during the day if it is still the same day, and past simple for days before today. For example they usually ask "Has comido hoy?" and not "Comiste hoy?", but "Que comiste ayer?" for yesterday.

I'm not really interested in food so I didn't bother to learn korean food names. But I like cooking shows a lot. How? Well, I think it's because they can make delicious looking foods through simple ingredients. Even though I'm not interested in food I have to eat something that tastes good. ...Me encantan las frutas y las verduras... Cocino para mi novio algunas noches en la semana (o cada semana). El también cocina para mi. Lo quiero a él! Mi novio cocina arroz y muchas verduras... Por esto me encanta tanto la comida.

You do not need to use pronouns as the subject like Yo, Nosotros that much, unless you want to emphasize it. Spanish speakers omit them most of the time.

"Lo quiero a él!" or "Lo amo!" would be the closest to "I love him", choose the first to be more passionate and the second to be more endearing. "Lo quiero!" is more like I want him (or it, depending on what is said right before), but "El quiero!" is not correct. "Le quiero (a él)!" would also be acceptable but less used I would say.

Much@(s) is an adjective usually placed before the noun, contrary to how most adjectives are placed after the noun. It is confusing of course in the beginning.

Por + something is used to say "because of"/"due to"/"for". Por esa razón nunca se volvió. Because of that reason he never returned. -Leí su libro. -Por qué? -Por curiosidad. -I read his book. -Why? -Because I was curious. Sometimes in every day conversation the question is asked simply "Por?" without the qué.

Well done, here is a lingot!

I think the second sentence has some issues, although I'm not accomplished enough yet to correct them all. It would be 'mi perro,' though, because it's a noun. Like you would say 'esta persona es mi amigo, Juan.' And 'llegar' needs to be conjugated so it applies to Skyla: Skyla llega. I think 'llega a ser enfermo' is still probably not the right way to say it, but I can't offer you any better ideas, haha. Now that I'm reading it over again, I think it would be 'demaisado,' even though Clover is a girl, because 'demaisado' isn't describing her. But I was able to understand it, so good job! All those conjugations are really hard, Duo is always nabbing me for them, too, haha.

I think it's great that you even tried. Even if there are mistakes, I as a German could understand it well. Keep writing. I think it's great.

    Now to the corrections:

The literal speech looks like this ->Ich frage: "Darf ich Sie zum Abendessen einladen?" I think you mean certainly invite "Ja sicher", antwortest du besorgt. Do you really mean worried in this context? Or do you mean embarrassed or shy -> verlegen?

Jetzt sind wir da und essen zusammen an einem Tisch. In the next sentence the infinitive of eat must be conjugated differently Du isst Obst und ich esse Fleisch. You did a great job with the past, the sentence is correct.

The relative clause would look like this: Das ist eine Nacht, die ich nie vergessen werde Or in the Past Das war eine Nacht, die ich nie vergessen werde

Il était un fois un garçon qui a voulu aller en Italie pour les vacances. Son copain était juste de ("jusqu'à" means "to" or "until") l'autre côté de la frontière. Ils ont choisi d'aller à Gênes (Genoa in French is "Gênes") et donc ils y sont allés (It has to be plurial form, because with the "être" auxiliary the past participle has the same case as the subject). Pendant leur visite, ils ont visité les bâtiments historiques et sont allés à l'opéra. Ils ont mangé au restaurant plusieurs (How you wrote, it sounds very weird. I would use "plusieurs", which means "several", in this case) soirs. Pour leur dernier (jour is masculine) jour, ils sont allés à la plage et, pour finir, ils ont eu les crèmes glacées (It's right, but most of the time we'll use "glaces"). À ("Quand c'était" sounds really weird, even if it's grammatically correct) la fin du vacances, ils sont retournés chez eux pour une nuit d'amour (mdr). Le jour suivant ("Le prochain jour" sounds weird and I think it's not necessarily the day after) les deux avaient (We would understand it like you wrote, but it's really weird) école, mais ils n'ont pas (we put the negation before the verb usually) pu se concentrer (to concentrate) durant (it means during, when you use "dans" it's more spatial, not "temporal") leurs cours, parce qu'ils rêvaient de la prochaine fois (It's a phrase, there's no more explanation) qu'ils se verront. (You use the "imparfait" (past tense) instead of the future)

Mais merci, tu as écris un très bon texte ! Most of your mistakes are just that some of your sentences sound weird.

It means "some", while without it, it would mean "this specific one") la confiture de fraises! Délicieux!!

Souvent la seule chose que je veux manger c'est du McDo. Ce n'est pas sain (No "e" here, when there's no word, we use the masculine) du tout mais j'adore le poulet!

Au sujet de la nourriture il y a beaucoup de restaurants dans notre zone. J'ai vraiment envie de sortir avec ma copine et de passer une bonne (it sounds better like this, but everyone would understand what you said) soirée avec elle en mangeant (again, it just sounds better) dans un restaurant - on pourra peut-être (when it means "maybe", you put the "-" between "peut" en "être") essayer (again, it just sounds better) de la nourriture chinoise parce que ça a l'air vraiment délicieux!

We have a lot of past tenses in french so it can be hard to know when to use which ! The imparfait (je marchais, elle avait) is more for describing states and ongoing actions while the passé composé (j'ai dit, j'ai fait) is for sudden actions (it's more used orally, in formal texts you'll find passé simple which is a whole other can of worms...)
Hope that helped and wasn't too boring. You already have a very wide vocabulary and a great sense of grammar! Bonne journée! :)

This is quite good. Shouldn't it be 夏休みだから, though? You might want to leave out の中 after 冷蔵庫 unless you're trying to emphasize that the food you're concerned about is inside, rather than on top of, the refrigerator. The only other thing that struck me was that everything was carefully polite until the な (食べますかな) or maybe the 大変 standing by itself. Because things suddenly switched with that な, 食べますかな sounds funny. Maybe better as 食べるかなー or 食べますかねー. In any case, I'll be right over! P.S. Have a great time on your 旅行!

    June 3, 2019

Oh my gosh, thanks so much! Yes, that should definitely be 夏休みだから, i still get nouns/conjugating adjectives confused and I'm not always clear on whether a だ should be there. And that makes total sense about the politeness level, in the future I'll try to be consistent about it. I'm glad that everything made sense though, thanks for your input and have a nice day!

The use of ね at the end of the sentence isn't wrong grammatically, but one wonders why you're asking the reader for agreement about what you like. It sounds very nervous. (Same for the use of ね a few sentences later.) In the middle of a sentence, use plain form for verbs: "...好きだから,..." . The next sentence is problematic. If you mean "I also like A, B, and C (and nothing else)", the と must come after each item except the last: Aと、Bと、Cも好きです。(You could replace the とs with やs if you didn't intend for this to be an exhaustive list.) The 私も is unnecessary in this sentence since until you introduce somebody else, we know who you're talking about. 今に is a special phrase that means "soon/in a little while" rather than "now" and probably isn't what you meant here. You could say 今、(the comma is necessary to separate it from 母), but to emphasize that you want it right now, ただ今 would be good here. (Very minor typo: the ガー in the second バーガー came out in ひらがな and without the dash.) Since I assume from your avatar that you're female, perhaps you meant わ at the end of the last sentence to emphasize how much you want that burger?

JiPxB: 1 -ね is also used as a sentence softener (not purely about agreement), which is why I use it. That usage can be seen as feminine from what I remember, but I prefer not to talk very girly overall, so I probably don't mean to use わ. However, I'll try to start using it so I can learn and get familiar with it at the very least! Thank you!

2 - I was going to use やs, but I wasn't sure how to structure it, so I used とs so I could be understood (if all else fails). Thank you!

3 and so on - I wasn't aware about those other points (好き being able to be verbified, 今, etc!), the one about お気に入り hit me like a truck! I completely spaced that the お was just honorific in this case and was optional within the phrase (depending on some things of course). Thank you for the correction on the typo as well :).

Note: My avatar is a boy, so interesting catch on me being a girl!

(A bit red-faced since I didn't look carefully at the avatar....) 1. Yes, -ね softens a sentence but I can't think of any instance where it doesn't imply asking for agreement. Perhaps someone here can provide another example that might be clearer? The sentence above really does have the same effect as the English "The food I really like is X, don't you think?" I suppose you could say it in a way that would come across as "The food I really like is X, ya know?" but it really does look strange in writing. And even if you got away with saying it that way once, the second instance would sound as strange as "ya know?" would sound in the English equivalent a second time. If you're going for a more relaxed tone, just use plain form. You're among friends here! :-) Interestingly, if you went for plain form throughout, you might even be able to get away with dropping です/だ at the end of the first sentence. That would be the least abrupt as well as the least stuffy. 2. (You used で in several places rather than と, so I was confused what you were trying to say. I was kind of expecting an action verb saying what the apples and sushi were used to do to you.) (And as for ーわ, I was thinking about that later as perhaps being a little too sugary if you're not that type. Totally understandable if you want to avoid it.)

Oh, my bad! I thought I had changed the でs to とs before submitting it! I must've forgotten.

That's true. I often have trouble deciding when I should switch to informal, even with friends! That's mainly why I use ね as a softener since I don't use informal that much (which ultimately makes me forget plain-form conjugations). I'll definitely try to use informal more when I want my sentences/speech to sound softer :).

No worries about the avatar thing. It's more amusing than not, especially since most people assume I'm a guy, ahaha!

Por ejemplo sulstroming (no estoy seguro de la ortografia aqui) o lutefisk de países nórdicos, que sabor y olor como calcetines viejos!

      Merci pour ton texte !

Here is the corrected version (there's a few more mistakes than what JellybeanXD123 found) :

Aujourd'hui, il y a un œuf sur la table. Je veux les pommes, les bananes et le pain. Je vais au supermarché et achète des baguettes. Elles sont bonnes !

First, the œ, it's no big mistake, french native speaker also so this mistake quite often, but try to do it write, it's always better ;)

Then, "je veux", because if you put a "t", it's the third person singular.

After that, there's "le pain", you could say "les pains", it's correct, but it's a bit weird and you use it only sometimes when speaking about a bunch of small bread and you have to take those ones, but most of the time, we'll still use the singular. Also, using the definite form means that you want this specific apples, bananas and bread. We'll rather use the undefinite form so "des pommes, des bananes et du pain" which means some apples, bananas and bread (general apples, bananas and bread)

Then, when you go somewhere we usually say "je vais à + article + word", but when the article is "le", we use "au" (and when it's "les, we use "aux").

After that, you need the article before "baguettes", since it's not those specific ones, we'll use "des". Then, "baguette" is feminine, so we'll use the feminine pronoun and the feminine form of the adjective!

Lastly, it's not important (as much as the first one), we put a space between the word and the "!" (also with the "?"), so it's "bonnes !" and not "bonnes!"

Mais encore merci pour ton texte ! Continue comme ça !

Make sure the oe is one letter (œ), and if you want to say "i want apples... etc. then it's Je veux... otherwise idk what you mean.... um ok les bananes is fine, les pains, we don't say that... say le pain for the bread cause it's like in english we don't say the breads. Je vais au supermarché et j'achete (i buy) or j'ai acheté (i bought) baguettes. Great job! You're doing well and are well on your way to learning french. Don't be discouraged by my overanalysis!
