New Content in the Japanese course (existing users)

https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/31280356 Having in mind what's said in this thread, the Japanese course's new content should be available for existing users in any moment. What I read though was that it's gonna be an A/B testing, if I didn't understand wrong, half of the users will get it and the other half will keep on using the old one. Please write here if anyone has got the new course. Looking forward to it! Thanks!

I just got the new content in the iPhone app. Unfortunately, at the same time it REMOVED all of the course notes! This is not good! I do most of my learning in the iPhone app, and being unable to access the course notes will be a big problem, especially since I'm very new to the language (only in my 3rd week). I really hope this is just a temporary glitch and that the course notes return very soon!

The Duolingo HQ team is looking into this. We should have an update shortly.

UPDATE: The Tips are coming back to iOS and Android within a few weeks (at least two weeks, certainly). They need to map the old notes onto the new skills, which is actually quite technically involved.

June 4, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/BowenCheng1

That's very good to know.

I also have all the notes removed from my iPhone app upon receiving all the new content. I have to proceed with the online version for now.

I hope it will be fixed as soon as possible.

The notes are missing on Android too, which makes things quite difficult! :( Do you know if they're looking into it on Android too?

Yes, they are.

Duome.eu usually has the course notes for the entire course. I believe they are up to date on the new JA tree. It's not as convenient as having it in the app, but at least you can still access them when you want them. I hope this helps!

I just got the new course a few minutes ago, and there really are many new lessons. I am an old user and have had my account for a while. Who else has gotten the courses new additions?

I also just got it and I'm very excited to see how much new stuff there is. :D

Edit, mine says: "treated":false "destiny":"3" "condition":"control" "eligible":false

They've added a new string in the user data within the last couple of hours, which is probably the actual one related to this new A/B test:

"tree_ja_en_v4_experiment"

Would you mind seeing what it says for this one instead?

Here's what I have now: "tree_ja_en_v4_experiment":{"contexts":[],"treated":false,"destiny":"control","condition":"control","eligible":false} I did not receive the update. I'm pretty bummed... but I guess I'll keep on going and look forward to the update later on. :)

June 4, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/testmoogle

I don't reckon anyone has it yet.

It's currently 13:50 Pittsburgh time. I have eight "existing" Duolingo accounts but none of them have been changed over to the new tree yet. I've just checked them all within the last 30 minutes.

When the A/B test for brand new Duolingo accounts started three weeks ago, I think I remember the test start time being stated as 3 pm Pittsburgh time. So maybe it's supposed to be 3 pm again this time?

Interestingly, I think I can already detect which A/B group each of my accounts are in. It looks like five of my accounts are in the group which will get the new tree and three accounts won't. Thankfully my main account is one of the lucky five. It appears to be simply that the A/B test itself hasn't begun yet on any of these eight accounts. ^^

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/VickColdice

Can you tell me please how did you detect?

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/testmoogle

IMPORTANT UPDATE (21:00 Pittsburgh time)

They've added a new string in the user profile data in the time since I wrote this post. It's very likely this is the actual correct one for the new A/B test for "existing users":

"tree_ja_en_v4_experiment"

The string I mentioned originally in this post below probably was purely the A/B test for "new users" only. It turned out not to be for both A/B tests...

Original post follows.

I have a new account "tempmoogle" which I created after the A/B test for new users began on 15th May. I've been doing the new tree already on that account. ^^

From looking at my user data, I looked for an A/B test string with a name that sounds the most likely to be related to this Japanese course Tree 2.0 A/B test.

"tree_ja_en_v3_experiment"

For this, my "tempmoogle" account which was already on the new tree has the following properties:

  • "treated": true
  • "destiny": "3"
  • "condition": "3"
  • "eligible": true

So it was eligible to start the test, it was treated to the test, the destiny for which group it should end up in is "3", and the current active condition of this account is "3".

Whereas five of my "existing" accounts say:

  • "treated": false
  • "destiny: "3"
  • "condition": "control"
  • "eligible": false

Whilst my other three "existing" accounts say:

  • "treated": false
  • "destiny: "control"
  • "condition": "control"
  • "eligible": false

All eight of these "existing" accounts say "eligible: false", which I believe means the A/B test doesn't apply at all to these accounts (probably simply meaning the test hasn't started yet).

All eight are "condition: control", but five of them are "destiny: 3" the same as my tempmoogle account already on the new tree.

So once the test begins for "existing" users, all eight of these should change to "eligible: true", and the five which have a destiny of "3" will change from being "condition: control" to "condition: 3". Then these five accounts should have the new tree.

...Or, as I'm making pretty massive assumptions, I could well be completely and utterly wrong about all of this!! :P

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/SoitDX

"tree_ja_en_v3_experiment":{"contexts":[],"treated":false,"destiny":"3","condition":"control","eligible":false},"

It seems I've got the same as everyone else here in the comments. :D Hope we can get it though..

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Farrago

Hope you’re wrong. I got “control” for both destiny and condition. I don’t want to be in the control group!

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Sara1190

I have the same. :(

June 3, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/testmoogle

I could very easily be wrong.

For instance, even *IF* the string I found is the correct one for the new accounts A/B test, for all I know it's possible a different string might be added for the existing accounts A/B test.

Please don't anyone give up on the chance that you'll be in the lucky group just based solely on the guesswork I've presented. Also, please don't anyone with "3" destiny for this string get their hopes up too much either.

The string I mentioned might very well be for something totally unrelated to this A/B test. ^^

(Also, it's 17:50 now in Pittsburgh. I guess that 3 pm idea I had was wrong, so more reason why I might also be wrong about this, haha. All eight of my "existing" accounts are still on the old tree.)

I got the new course yay, buuuut... notes are gone again :( on both android and browser. I would get it if it was just the new lessons that were missing them but its every single lesson, even ones that were untouched. why duo why

Edit: I also lost ranks and progress in all lessons that were modified. Thats really discouraging
Edit2: checked on browser and I have lost ranks but not progress there so now nothing matches. What a confusing mess

I just got access (yay!) but no notes at all in the mobile app. I'm super excited that the level of difficulty in the new lessons seems to be a lot higher (more use of kanji, for one, without the annoying, unreadable strings of hiragana.)

I had conquered the course previously, and I didn't lose my Champion badge either.

I have the new tree, but at the same time I have a problem. After this update I lost most of the progress so also my golden badgesturned into lvl 0 from 5 :( And a lot of topics are inactive because it says to get at least lvl 1 of every skill that I already done in the past :( For example I finished transit topic last week reaching lvl 5, now it is lvl 0 so as many other topics..

June 5, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Austonst

I had hit level 5 in all skills literally yesterday, which seemed like perfect timing for me to get access to the new tree, but over half of the old skills got reset down to level 0 or 1. I'm sure there's some new material in there, but it still doesn't seem worth it to me to spend time grinding those skills out again. Little unfortunate to lose all that progress. Maybe I'll just forget about them and focus on the new skills.

June 5, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/krellkey

I've been at level 5 in all the skills I the old tree for a few months. I haven't been granted access to the new tree with this login so I created a new account.

For the skills that were in the old tree, there are many new sentences, more complex sentences, and way more kanji. Despite feeling like "meh, I got this" for the earlier skills in the old tree, I'm finding those same skills in the new tree to be pleasantly challenging.

My two cents: it's worth working the reset skills, but don't feel trapped there. Play around to find the balance that keeps your learning fun!

June 7, 2019

Same thing happened to me, I just tested out of level zero, and with all of the old skills at level 1 you can access the next new category.

I'm really happy with the new tree so far! The audio is a bit buggy at times (a couple of "type what you hear" exercises had missing audio, reported them but still a bit annoying), but apart from that the PC version looks really good. I was a couple crowns away from having the whole golden tree when the new one came out, what a joy to see all of this new content!! The extra kanji is a very welcome addition, and just more phrases and words in general is good too. This is going to keep us busy for a while :)

I have the new Japanese tree as well, but I feel it's still so new that I don't even want to look at it yet. (Or maybe I feel that they might still want to fix a couple of things... just a feeling).

Edit: I use the website not the app.

June 5, 2019

It seems like the blue dots indicate modules with improvements. I've gone back and practiced some of the early modules and they now include many more kanji.

June 5, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Hasiva

I got it yesterday and I must say IT'S BIG.

• Outside of the new lessons, some of the older ones also got updated for e.g. Intro 1 or Home 1.

• In the lessons, kanjis pop-up much more often, though, sadly, hiragana versions still show up (I'd much more prefer kanji-only with furigana, that'd disappear after gaining 2 crowns on a skill or something [the furigana would be also useful from a programmer stand-point, because it could be used for the text-to-speech function to indicate what reading should be used])

• There are many, many audio issues, mostly regarding the new Kanji symbols. I hope they'll take thier time and release the update to the public after min. a month or so, because there're just too much of them to fix.

• There are no light-bulbs, but I think they just didn't finish some of them yet, so they'll implement them back after all of them'll be complete.

• I'm also suprised the katakana didn't get it's own skill set and is still integrated with other lessons. In the end it is still a completly new alphabet (abugida to be precise) with the same amount of characters as in hiragana. I already knew both of them, before I joined, but even so, I don't think it's easy to learn katakana from the duolingo skills as they are now. But maybe, I'm wrong.

Also I'm sad. I joined Duolingo about 23 days ago, so I can't test brand new skills other than counting yet. I have to do older lessons first. T.T Being this new, also makes me less of a help, because I don't have any proper knowledge to do detailed comparison. :C

June 6, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Donttouchme0

I have a few comments for the new course. I got put in the new pilot group, so while I appreciate the new additions, I want to point out some things that I would like to see addressed.

Some courses that I have golded to level 5 are now reset, such as the Home or the Family ones. I think this is because they introduced new kanji. Still, I spent a good 4 hours to get each of them to level 5, and as a curious person, I searched up the kanji myself and studied them along with the course. In other words, I think it's a little unfair to reset the course completely just because of the kanji. At least reset it to level 3 or 4.

Secondly, I'm a little lost without the course notes (lol), which have disappeared on the phone app. I've also noticed that the course notes on mobile, while it was still there, are different from that on the website. Hopefully they can get this fixed for more consistently.

Thirdly and lastly, I found out that my mother, who is learning the french course, has "unlockable" courses that can be bought using gems. Why don't we have that? Japanese has a ton of cultural things (for French, one of the courses was "flirting", I think). Hopefully they can add that soon.

June 6, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/piguy3

Some courses that I have golded to level 5 are now reset, such as the Home or the Family ones.

This is the way tree updates tend to go. If it's only a small fraction of the pre-existing skills, that's much smaller than it's been for many tree updates. If you want your gold color back, you should be able to quiz through the levels back to 5 in just a few minutes if what they've added is kanji you've already learned.

Thirdly and lastly,...

I think it is basically the common understanding that bonus skills will not be added to courses that do not already have them. If I recall correctly, the Olympics and Subculture skills in the first tree version were originally planned as bonus skills but were simply incorporated into the tree itself when it became clear that bonus skills were not in the offing for additional languages.

Great job to the staff and all the people working on the Japanese tree. I'm very happy about the changes and glad to see the tree improving even more. Keep up the good work!

My testmoogle account didn't get it. My main account didn't get it either. Out of my eight Duolingo accounts, only four of them got it.

I don't know whether Duo's A/B test system ever transfers users from one group to another at all during the tests? We'll likely just have to wait now until the A/B test is completed. Let's hope it doesn't drag on too long. ^^;
