Although I got it correct, I thought counting was expressed by using 'uno hasta cinco'. Is there any difference?

I think "uno hasta cinco" is "one through five" and "de uno a cinco" is "from one to five". I could be wrong though. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am.

Not exclusively, in this case "a" works as a preposition, just like "hasta". It indicates direction from 1 to 5. It's equally valid.
