Stories - can we have them in the app?
I appreciate the work that the folks at Duolingo have done to create Stories. I am also aware that there is a difference between making something available online vs in the app.
I'd like to know if there are any plans to include Stories in the app? I currently use the iPhone app and do have it up-to-date. I think Stories would be a great addition to the app.
there used to be a version of stories on the app where you'd have a conversation with the characters in different scenarios. Lost it on the app then gained stories on the web. Wish they would do both
Wow, really? Conversations? That would HUGELY helpful. That is currently a massive blindspot for the app. All you do is translate things which is a completely different skill from actually carrying on a conversation. I just discovered the website has the "stories", I have only been using the app. Unfortunately even the very first story seems a bit advanced for me. :( But I will keep trying I guess.
yeah they were I used to love them but when I updated my app and found out that they weren't there I was quite disappointed
Keep at it. Soon they will seem easy. It’s ok to reread a story. Surprising what you missed during the first read.
You can enjoy the stories on your smartphone as well. You only have to login about the browser or for example gmail. Then you can use the app and the web version on your smartphone.
That's a poor "solution".
Why have the app if you have to go through your browser just to do Stories?
i do this, it works perfectly well.
It would be better in the app for sure, but the experience is smooth enough on browser.
Well it isn't smooth anymore. As of yesterday, (23 Oct '19) the Stories website is extraordinarily slow to load, and when it does (eventually) it has been remodelled. Now it wants my log-in, despite the fact that I have been using it for years, but if entered, it does nothing... program doesn't refuse log-in/password as "incorrect," it just stalls and does nothing
If instead I dismiss the log-in dialogue box, the Stories page now thinks I am a new recruit and starts quizzing me on why I want to learn a language, which language etc. how many XPs per day, etc. Meanwhile all of my 1080 day streak, my crowns, my lingots and Experience Points are all wiped out... or rather, ignored... (they are still there in the Android lesson app).
Oh Boy, am I heartily sick of Duolingo being constantly remodelled, and MESSED UP every time. And a lot of what goes wrong, is never ever put right.
Meanwhile, Stories are pretty much useless to me. Bang goes an important part of my practise.
Oh, and don't bother with reporting bugs such as this. The bug reporting system is full of..... yup, BUGS. (It goes round and round in circles).
yes, this is exactly what is happening with me! I thought I was doing something wrong! And there is nowhere to get help (just the usual FAQ useless list). Thanks for sharing!
I am sorry, but what does log in about the browser mean? I found "stories" by accident yesterday and now I can't find it again. Can I please get the exact e-mail address? I assume, I will guess, I put into Google? I only used it for a minute but I really liked it. Thank you!
You go to duolingo.com and log in to you account and at the top of the page you'll find "learn/ stories/discuss/store/more" along with your language flag, how many crowns and lingots you have, your day streak and your profile pic. So click on stories and they're there, you might find later they appear in your app as some users have, but if not then you can continue to do them online on the website.
I totally agree with you, I have been meaning to write a post about this for a while. I would personally love having Stories in the app. They have become a a major part of the Duolingo learning aspect and aren't really a "Lab" project anymore. So why not have them available all the time across multiple platforms?
Additionally, this would open up another feature for Duolingo Plus: Offlines Stories, which could be an extension of the current offline lessons feature. I would consider Plus more seriously if I could download Stories to do on the go.
The other major part of Duolingo web that I want on the mobile app is Timed Practice. Both Stories and Timed Practice are very important to my learning strategy here, and I would really like it if Duolingo eventually adds them to the mobile app for better platform parity.
Thanks for writing this post. I gave you a lingot! :D
I have to agree that I would also actually consider getting Duolingo Plus if it ment that I could have the offline stories. I don't really like timed practice but I can understand how it can be useful for others and so it would be a great addition to the app as well.
I love the stories, they are my favorite part of Duolingo. I used Duolingo the app for maybe a year before I discovered the website and the stories. Stories are soooo much better for learning a language. They give you a context that doing the regular lessons just don't. In fact, I think the regular lessons should be story based. Two things I would LOVE to see with them; a very easy way to just read or listen to the entire thing without having to click through it. I'd like to read them like a little book... or have the audio available so I could listen while exercising. Maybe even if I had to manually do it and the exercises first to have those parts available.
I like the stories too. I wish they were available on the app. I enjoy completing the questions when I am on PC. Most of the time, however, I am on my phone app.
I literally didn't know that stories existed for such a long time! I think they should get their own app along with the Duolingo Dictionary.
I wonder why any Duolingo Representative doesn't care about this topic. Duolingo Stories in the app would be such a plus, but they don't care. As I'm using more and more this app, I found that it doesn't teache me usefull expressions, but rather stupid ones like "the bear is eating your pizza". Ok, it helps me enriching my vocabulary and learning grammar rules, but why don't you try to make it a little bit better? Why should I pay for Duolingo Plus App/monthly if it lacks many features, "Stories" being one of them. Hello, any duolingo moderator here?
I too wonder whether the Duolingo team are bothering to read these discussions. I had Duolingo stories both on my pc and my mobile. Now I still get them on my pc but I am not recognised on my mobile and they ask me to enroll as if I were a new member and start from scratch. And there is no way one can sign up as an old member. Very frustrating!
Now we know they are rolling stories out on the app, I'd like to know why only to certain users. Who decides who gets what. Why not just roll out to everyone at the same time (after beta test).... The same applies to health. Why do some have it and others not - seriously hampers learning.
The stories seem to work okay in my phone's browser app, and there isn't any problem in using them. It would be better if they were integrated natively I agree, but it is possible to use them as-is now.
That's what I did earlier today. I'd just like to see if we can get them integrated into the app.
I agree! Stories would be a great tool to get more fluent and to change the pace a bit.
I am using an android phone and i dont have the stories either. Bu they are on my boyfirend'a iphone. I think android phones will get the update later
I don't think it's an android/ios issue, I have android and I have stories, some ios users have it. I also have the older versions with lingots and no having to gain health but my friends have the newer version with the blue gems and have to gain health and they haven't had stories added to their app yet, there doesn't seem to be much clarity. I really wish they'd just make one version of the app and roll it out across the board - personally I like my older version, the health top up doesn't seem to have any benefit for me, and with stories in the app... I can't complain since it's free but there are so many issues like this, it seems like the duolingo tech department is a bit of a mess!
The same situation with me! The other family members have the stories on the app but not me! Why is this? We are using iOS.
Yes, il should be amazing but I have to admit the browser experience is not bad at all, it works pretty well.
I previously only had it on the website and I did a few online and after that I got a notification saying "you've unlocked stories" and it added an extra tab for them in my app, so I don't know if they are rolling it out to app users or maybe if you do a certain amount of storied online you get it in the app, I can't remember how many I did, I think I did all of set 1 (10 stories) before I got the app tab.
Maybe... but they can't even get it together to roll out the same version of the app to all users so I dunno, but I'm glad I have the stories on my app for now at least! :)
I like to use the app because it is always on me but I love reading through the stories and wish that they could be on the app as it would help me to use duolingo more often and I think that it would be an amazing addition.
Does anyone else here have a problem with Duolingo stories? Since yesterday, the app on my phone does not recognise me anymore. I cannot practice any stories and be credited with the XPs. I tried it on my laptop and it doesn't work here either.
I had the same Stories trouble for a while last week, after an update to their presentation. But Stories is working OK for me now... for you too, I hope?
I see people saying they have problems with stories in the app. I do not see them at all in the DL iOS app. Is it that i just don’t know where to look? Or is it that some users get them and others don’t?
Some people have them in the app and other users still not. I started set 1 of the stories online (using browser) and then I received a notification saying in my android device where I use the app saying "you have unlocked stories" and now have them on both. I don't think it's a iOS vs android issue as other iOS users are saying they have them, it may depend something such as on how long you've had duolingo as to when you get the update or it might be totally random, nobody seems to know or to have been able to get clarification from duolingo. For me in the app they appear in the var at the bottom of the app between the "learn" and "friends" buttons so I doubt you'd have missed noticing if you had it in the app.
I got the "you've unlocked stories" message a few weeks ago, and that's how I discovered they exist. It was near the time I broke 100k XP, but not exactly at that instant. My wife doesn't have it yet. She's still under 50k XP. We're both on Android phones. I don't know if 100k XP is the key, but if it is that's an awfully high bar!
I don't think it is related to the 100k xp as I only have about a quarter of that and I have them in app. Did you get the message in the app or using your browser? I'm wondering if people unlock it in the app after using the stories tab in the browser, but otherwise I haven't found any consistent info, it's not xp or android vs iOS etc. I wondered if it could be related to how long people have had/used their accounts. There's still people with different versions of the app so I think it's equally likely that there isn't a logical reason as to why some have it in app and others yet, just duolingo not too hot in certain areas and tech and updates etc seems to be one of them
