Arabic Word of the Day 43#
*Pẹlẹ o! Today we’re going to continue our lesson from yesterday! So yesterday we focused on conversion of “I” verbs to “she” and “he verbs”. Today we’re going to look at converting into “we” and “you” (s)
So here are two verbs using “I” as the subject:
ألعب = “Al3ab” = I play
أشرب = “Ashrab” = I drink
Take a moment to change these into “he/she plays” and “he/she drinks” [comment below if you wish to get these checked or refer to yesterday’s post]. Now, how do you think we can change this into “we play” and “we drink”? Simple:
Rule: Take the “alif” (أ) off the beginning of the word, and swap with “noon” (ن).
Easy? Test yourself using the two verbs above before seeing the answer below:
ألعب = “Al3ab” = I play => نلعب = “Nal3ab” = We play
أشرب = “Ashrab” = I drink => نشرب = “Nashrab” = We drink
Now to “you” drink. Here, there are two different changes. One for if the person is a boy, and one is they’re a girl:
Rule: If “you” is a boy, we use the same rule we used for “she….” [which I admit is kinda confusing]. So, do you still remember yesterday’s rule for “she….”? It is; take the “alif” (a/e/u) from the beginning of the word and swap with a “taa” (t). So, if you want to change an “I” verb to a “she” or “you (m)”, this is what you would do:
ألعب = “Al3ab” = I play => تلعب = “Tal3ab” = You (m) / She plays
أشرب = “Ashrab” = I drink => تشرب = “Tashrab” = You (m)/ She drink(s)
Now if the subject isn’t obvious from the whole sentence, there will be an indicator before the verb. The indicator would be either “Hiya” or “Anta”, do you still remember these pronouns from our very first lesson? ;p I won’t be surprised if you don’t. So “Hiya” means ‘she’ and “Anta” means ‘you (m)’. So remember those in case it isn’t obvious who the subject is by just reading the sentence. Also remember that pronouns are optional to use in Arabic, as [as you can see] our verbs tell us who the sentence is about.
Rule: If “you” is a girl, we use the same rule for “she…/you(m)” [just as above] only we add “een” at the end:
ألعب = “Al3ab” = I play => تلعب = “Tal3ab” = You (m) / She plays => تلعبين = “Tal3abeen” = You (f) play
أشرب = “Ashrab” = I drink => تشرب = “Tashrab” = You (m)/ She drink(s) => تشربين = “Tashrabeen” = You (f) drink
A few sentence examples:
أنت تلعب كرة القدم = “Anta tal3ab kurat alqadam” = You (m) play football.
نحب القطط كثيرا = “Nuh^ib alq^it^at^ katheeran” = We love cats a lot!
لو سمحتي، من أنت؟ = “Low samah^tee, man antee?” = Excuse me, who are you (f)?
Thanks for Reading! Any Qs, Proof-reading, Suggestions for future topics, Possible Improvements I can make, please comment below! Thanks! ;D Have a Nice Afternoon! B)
الطفل في التاسعة من العمر لا يستطيع أن يبدي موافقته < :) That's what I think it is, but 'consent' is a hard one in Arabic
Sorry but this is off topic, how does Luke_5.1991 have the Arabic course?
I think there used to be an Arabic course a while ago, but it was Egyptian dialect so they got rid of it. Lol you confused me for two secs ;p
أنا لا أشرب الشاي أبدا ;p
It was rubbish so far :L The school was empty cus everyone decided to take 2 days off :((( I wasn't allowed! [sigh]
I didn't go school either. :p Cause this week's a holiday, like last week.
There has to be something you enjoyed about today.
Sassy, and Ruwadya, I hope you both had a great Eid (I forgot the other word)
What are some popular Arabic foods eaten on that day? Also, is the holiday just to mark the end of Ramadan, or is their another meaning behind it as well?
Sorry I haven’t really seen your posts this week. It has been insane!
"Eid Mubarak" you mean? "Mubarak" means "blessed" so if you say "I hope you guys have had a great Eid" you don't add it [I know you knew that! ;p ]
Well the food depends on the country really. There's loads of food! I'll name you some I know and you might know one or two :
-Baklawa (Baklava in English for some reason?)
-Ghurayba (Mainly N Africa)
- 3abambar (Also N Africa but actually I saw Italians and Britons making them on tv shows which was kinda cool)
-Alka3k als^akhree (Rock cakes, I feel like I've heard them in English before?)
-Loads of sweet dishes [like I can't even name them all!]
-Couscous [you surely know that, I mean it's a normal food but yeah not everyone has that everyday]
-On one of the Eids [which I can't remember] they tend to kill a sheep and cook it [I think it's the other one] Luckily that's the "mens job" XD phew, I don't like chopping sheep heads off ;p
-Booreek [looks a bit like samosas]
-Imbhat^in [don't mind a bit of dialect ;p ]
The celebration is to mark the end, and the whole point is for you to feel the way poor people feel during Ramadan and on Eid eat your fill and give to charity I guess
Ooh so that's what you were doing on the mountains! Ah lucky! ;p I'm not jealous though cus I'm gonna do better than that this summer! Can't wait!!! I'll make sure I find hidden treasures! ;p If you see a mushroom with an award on the front page of your newspaper during the summer know that's me!! XD
Did you dig out bones or were you finding treasure? Tell US!
Thank you for the interesting info.!
I wasn’t digging bones LOL I am actually working by grading Spanish papers, and writing letters (in Spanish) and translating letters (in Spanish) I went into the office telling everyone I speak B1 Spanish and NOBODY in the office speaks Spanish at all! (It’s a mess but good practice for me I have graded over 2500 questions so far and to be honest I’m not really even qualified to be grading papers LOL.)
Where are you going this summer?
P.S I am not doing education work (like school) I am helping out with a different type organization.
N Africa ;p I'm not gonna tell you where I'm from cus... YA why not? But anyways Ima see the relatives I've either seen once, or never seen and Ima go on our lovely mountains and there's loads of historical stuff there cus you know Africa, no-one goes looking for old things there although there's some of the oldest houses that look like ant hills! Anways, no-one has really researched them properly and I'm gonna go wonder about in the and get lost XD And there's caves [which my grandparents lived in!!!] and yeah that's the mountains... I'll visit the city too but not as much ... ;p BYE I'm going to brush me teeth ;p
That is exciting! I have never been to North Africa but si have seen documentaries (mainly in the Morocco area) and it is absolutely beautiful!
I hope you and your family has a great time seeing it meeting new relatives!
Will you get to speak Arabic with them?
Umm no I'm not going to talk in Arabic because I'm an Amazigh not an Arab :D it's really cool cus we know their language and our language whereas Arabs don't know our language ;p Special!
Are you going somewhere in the summer? :D
What do you mean holiday?!! :O why's everyone getting holidays? I've got an 8week term going on?! It's gonna drag! :( Nope, I didn't enjoy anything today! Or yesterday in fact :(((
Only 1 friend came in and got sent out in German, so I ended up lonely in a double lesson of Triple Science with the worst supply in history [made us do more work than a normal lesson!]. The class was empty and dead, I was the only girl in Spanish with 5 other boys, a double English lesson with some gruesome video of ppls arms flying and guts coming out! ... Had no breakfast cus I thought I was fasting, and had no lunch cus I lost my ID card... The day DRAGGED X_X
That must have been horrible. No food and being lonely. Someone should make that into a horror story with ghosts and it could be like a zombie apocalypse(my young teenage imagination is awesome ;p).
Double English too. Now that is dreadful. I feel sorry for you. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day.
Oh yah! You reminded me of a dream my sis had where she said she was getting chased by zombies, and in the climax of it she ran into a toilet and locked the door. They began bashing the door, she was so scared so she decided to.... Wash her hands. XD WTH?
Oh yeah and today was a lot better [other than the fact I got loaded with work and revision and crap] :D Was your day good?
Still no fair! I thought the whole of England had the same days off! [sigh] :o
I, am a iranian persion too close to arbic language now in our schools learning of arabic is necessary and me sick of it . arabic maybe makes you tiered so take it easy
Learning any language is tiring. That who chooses to pick Arabic must be very determined and interested, or else the knowledge they learn in a month, will fade in a day... :) Maybe Arabic just isn't for you :D Enjoy learning German!
