French idioms #1 - Madeleine de Proust

Hi everyone,

I'm a french native who likes hanging around on Duolingo forums, helping people and learning about languages (even my own!). I'd like to launch a new "concept" : 1 day(...ish), 1 phrase (or idiom, I don't know which one is the more accurate). I'll try to present you different phrases that are strange, funny, cute, or simply interesting. If you are a native english speaker and you like learning and teaching stuff, feel free to do the same thing on the forum English for french speakers !

Today let's learn about the phrase : Madeleine de Proust. La madeleine de Proust comes from the French writer Marcel Proust and his book À la recherche du temps perdu. In this novel, the narrator tells us that the fact to eat a madeleine (shell-shaped cookie for american-english speakers) reminds him of his childhood. His aunt served him madeleines with tea when he was a child, and as an adult, each time he eats a madeleine it reminds him of these moments with her.

This has so much marked the French literature that "madeleine de Proust" has become a very popular phrase. It describes a thing that reminds you of your childhood. E.g : "Le couscous, c'est ma madeleine de Proust". Every french knows about this phrase but I doubt that it is taught at school or on Duolingo. I personally find it very pretty, and I hope you do to :)

Take care and see you soon !

P.S : Feel free to correct my English

Bonsoir. Je suis brésilien et j'étudie ton langage à travers de Duolingo. Mon langue naturel est le portugaise, mais je comprends un peu d'anglais, comme tout le monde, donc cette langue est mondial. Alors, si nous pouvons échanger des connaissances, je vais être heureux. Désolé, si mon française est encore, très mauvais. Ao revoir.

I've only learned French for a week and before hand on and off, and being able to roughly decipher this was a huge boost of motivation. Unrelated to what you said, but was too excited not to comment :)

If you like, PAULO.IRAKAKI, we could correspond occasionally and chat. I am a native English speaker who speaks a small amount of Spanish, French, Russian, Portuguese, German and a smattering of a few other languages. I lived and worked in these countries when I was younger and hope to return, so I’m studying them after decades of little use. Thanks for participating and helping! ( btw, your French looks quite good to me! )

Bonjour PAULO.IRAKAKI, si je puis me permettre (car j'apprécierais tant la même chose avec mon anglais..), en français corrigé cela donnerait : ".. j'étudie ta langue via Duolinguo. Ma langue maternelle est le portugais ...comme tout le monde, car cette langue est mondiale. ... échanger nos connaissances, j'en serais heureux. Au revoir". Mais à la base c'était déjà très bien !

Best of luck with your move back to France! I wish I were going back there, too. My time there was wonderful and I miss It very much. May I ask what your reasons are for returning and what it is that you do?

Connaissez-vous 'l'histoire derrière l'histoire'... La Madeleine de Proust lui rappelait en fait autre chose... Ou plutôt une autre personne... ;-)

J'avais surtout le souvenir que c'était pas une madeleine mais une simple tartine de pain beurré... !!!!

T'as confondu avec OSS117.

I think the best way will be to look for "French idioms" in the search field/area.

That was great. I wish I could use that idiom, but the people I speak French with here would not know the reference since most are from either Africa, Canada, or from Haiti.

It is also used in Spain (Andalusia for sure) and Romania, I think. La magdalena de Proust in Spanish and Madlena lui Proust in Romanian. Je dois admettre que j'ai été surpris par votre choix pour une première expression. Vous maitrisez très bien la langue de Shakespeare
