Arabic Word of the Day 48#
Сәлеметсіз бе! Today we’re going to look at pet animals and we might go into a bit of farm animals too! We’ll leave the wild ones [like my siblings] for tomorrow! Let’s start:
الحيوانات = “Alh^ayawaanaat” = [The] Animals - Quite a long word! I feel for you guys! ;p
الحيوانات الأليفة = “Alh^ayawaanaat al’aaleefa” = [The] Pets – So we know “Alh^ayawaanaat” means “the animals”, “Al’aaleefa” means “that are domestic”, and obviously pets are domestic… Hopefully!
القط = “Alq^it^” = The Cat – The best most amazing pet you can ever wish for! ~(=^‥^) . ... After a wolf [other than the fact it’d probably eat you… but hey! I already have enough predators after me ;p]
الكلب = “Alkalb” = The Dog – ໒( = ᴥ =)ʋ Often used as an insult [they’ve got a point!] and unfortunately for dog-lovers, you won’t find much people walking a dog in Arabia… Well anyways, let’s think of the bright side, you don’t have to step in a good 30-inch pile of crap wherever you walk!
السمكة = “Alsamaka” = The Fish [s] – We should know this already from our food journey! Also, why would anyone want a pet fish? Like honestly!
الطائر = “Alt^aa’ir” = The Bird – Literally means “the one which flies” which isn’t very creative, but hey! Let’s stop criticizing Arabs uncreativity! XD
الببغاء = “Albabaghaa’ ” = The Parrot – Often used to describe that one person who won’t stop talking ;p
الهامستر = “Alhaamstir” = The Hamster – Another late - arriver to Arabia! I’m sure you guys will find that hard to remember!
الأرنب = “Al’arnab” = The rabbit – Nope, I will not dare put a pic of Big Chungus!
الفأر = “Alfa’r” = The mouse
الثعبان = “Althu3baan” = The snake [serpent] – Don’t ask me why some weirdoes have pet snakes but OK!
الأفعى = “Al’af3aa” = The Snake – Now this word is more like a snake, whereas the other is a serpent… But everyone just says both because… A serpent is a snake? I guess? Anyways, both are common so just remember them as snake.
الجرذ = “Aljurth” = The Rat – Make sure you pronounce the “th” like that of “that”… if that makes sense
الدجاجة = “Aldajaaja” = The Chicken [s] - We also did this one in our food journey, but we learnt it as plural. This is the singular form.
الحصان = “Alh^is^aan” = The Horse – Arabic horses are beautiful! They’re elegant [unlike the British ones… No offence… If that’s offensive] But yeah, they’re awesome and they’re actually quite special for Arabs as they’re part of their culture [so you’ll never hear an Arab call another Arab a horse, cus that’s a compliment… Though it’s never used to compliment someone lol XD]
البقرة = “Albaq^ara” = The Cow – If you’re a Muslim, you might know this from the longest surah in the Quran which is called “Al’baq^ara”
الخروف = “Alkharoof” = The sheep [s]
الغنم = “Alghanam” = The Sheep [s] – Also another word for “sheep”. You could use either as they’re both common
الحمل = “Alh^amal” = The Lamb – Please, please, please don’t get this mixed up with “Alh^aml” or “Alh^aamil” which is “pregnant”!!!! It’s a warning! Don’t come complaining that Sassy didn’t say!
المعزة = “Alma3za” = The Goat
الديك = “Aldeek” = The Cockerel/ Rooster
الكتكوت = “Alkatkoot” = The Chick – I totally enjoy pronouncing this word [especially when it’s plural which is “Alkataakeet”]
المهر = “Almuhr” = The Pony – Nope. No pink and blue ponies thank you!
الخنزير = “Alkhinzeer” = The pig – Not a very appreciated word in the Arabic region and is often used as an insult. They’re considered dirty animals, so you are unlikely to see pork in the super markets and restaurants etc…
الحمار = “Alh^imaar” = The Donkey – Quite an offence, used around the world in fact! I don’t see why as there’s a lot of people who use donkeys every day! They’re very helpful and fun to ride on when your parents won’t let you buy a horse. Though falling off the back isn’t the funniest I tell you! XD
الجمل = “Aljamal” = The Camel – Arabia is well-known for its camel and horse races, as well as camels being another part of Arabic culture. They’re quite holy I guess [I mean they do look holy with those batty eye-lashes XDDD! JK] Anyways, I advise you not to look to close at their hot eye-lashes so that you don’t get spit on your face for sun-cream! XD
I think I’ll end it here! I know there’s plenty of animals in this world [of them are a species that walk on two feet] so I won’t be able to note everything. If you want to know a certain word, please feel free to note that down below, Thanks! ;D
Any Qs, Proof – Reading, Suggestions, Points I can improve on, Comment below and I’ll hopefully be able to answer you shortly! Have a Good Evening! CYA!
Do you guys have any funny or weird animal experiences you want to share? Feel free to comment below! ;D
I’ll say that falling off donkeys, getting spat on by camels, the fright of walking to school every morning with a huge dog freaking the hell out of me as I walk by, chasing after some weird geckos or chameleons, and needing the toilet in the middle of the night while wild dogs are barking outside [so I can’t go and pee in the tiny box of a toilet outside] then getting chased by them is enough from my side! XD
Apparently 'حيوان' is an insult as well. Is it true?
Besides that, awesome lesson ;)
Yes it is actually! ;D I know that from getting called that everyday XD Good Notice!
Hmm it was good until that Computer Science exam which I said I was going to revise for then I managed to forget ;p The real problem is the fact it's going to be on my report ;o Gonna have to find an excuse [luckily I've got plenty!] :D How was your day? Good?
Okay I guess. Went back to school but it was really boring. Managed to leave a report in my locker that my parents still haven't asked about ;p. Walked home in the rain and got soaking wet. It's been raining since this morning. Your day sounds better than mine.
Just remembered I had a science test tomorrow. Gonna gather the class up and we're gonna ask the science teacher to delay it like we always do :)
Yeah I walked home wet too XD It was calm in the morning then it just suddenly started raining [I shouldn't have been surprised!]. My exam was horrible but I have learnt how to give up on stressing for Computer Science and let it grab me down! Science is easy! Just get it over and done with! ;D Trust me!
Okay Imma trust a person I've never met like that JK ;p. But science now compared to the science you did in year 8 is a lot harder. So yeah. My class will be freaking out.
Actually there's this one girl in my class who makes flash cards for every test and revises from the week before but I only bother to revise the morning of test and when we get our results,...... is higher(I'll leave it to you to guess who's higher ;p).
Well it is obviously much harder! Especially if you choose Triple Science [which I did]. However, imo it's not too hard.... I mean Chemistry's not too hard. Biology is just remembering and remembering [which isn't great if you have-short term memory like I do]. Physics on the other hand, is pure torture! I remember struggling in Physics in y7 and 8 so the sec I stepped into y9... I was dead.
Who actually revised in yr8?! :O Lol touch it! I'm the master of last sec revision! ;D Yet I still manage to get the highest scores [not always though ;p ]... I'm guessing you got higher than them lol ;p We're twins! how could you say that we don't know each other!! XD You insulted me! ;p JK CCL
LOL I was joking about that. Funny tho. ^-^
Last second revision is something I'm a pro at. Can't be bothered to make the effort to actually revise for a test everyone in my class knows I'm gonna ace. Without much revision I get more than or around 70% (which is my goal even though teachers say aim higher). And yes I did get higher than her and she's always telling me I'm not gonna fail and I'm a genius(??? I'm naturally dumb why am i genius in year 8???).
Heyyyyyyyyyy. We twins! Virtual high five ;)
Welcome to Arabic! XD
I mean, you learning Chinese, should be quite used to the difficulty ;) Good Luck with Chinese! ;D
Thanks for today's post!
I had a very weird animal (correction: arachnid) experience today. I happened to pass by a rather weird spider (or I was being weird. Take your pick). It was hanging upside down from the roof, doing nothing. So, since I don't meet spiders hanging upside down by a 7-8 feet long string of spider silk everyday, I began staring at it. It did nothing for a few moments. Then I began blowing at it, so that it began swinging back and forth. Still no reaction. Conclusion: the spider hanged itself in it's (so to speak) handcrafted noose.
Fun fact: There are violin strings made of spider silk! Do you recommend them, Maestro Andres?
I don't know how you got the courage to blow on the spider like that. The thought of a spider creeps me out. Spider is 'Al 3ankabut' ,isn't it Sassy?
Ikr XD I'd probably faint and die if a spider landed on my face half-way through blowing it like a nutter XD Oml my legs are itching now!
Yes, it is indeed! But that's for another lesson [coming soon!]. I'm going to dread that lesson. The only insects I don't mind are butterflies [which are kinda nice], ants [which are kinda cute though I can't see their face, but when you pick them up they don't weigh anything] and ladybirds... [as long as they don't touch me]
LOL they covered her body and she started screaming and then she discovered that it was just a nightmare ^^
-.- I think they share the same feeling towards us XD [I mean you... anyways I like them]
I've got another friend who's just terrified of spiders! Me, I'm fine until I stumble upon a Tarantula family gathering ;p
Does the "anka" in 3ankabut mean "eyes"?
No, eyes is "3uyoon". Good guess. It's just a name without meaning I think. [I should do a lesson on body parts! Good point!]
Spiders have never bothered me. The only animals (that live where I do) that I don’t like are snakes and rats/mice.
Spiders always bother me like they've got no-one else to bother! 2 weeks ago a spider concurred my bed [I ended up sleeping on the edge of my bed and had a back ache the next morning! Stupid spider!]
How... How could you?! You made the... Stupid idiotic damn insect... I mean Arachnid... die HAha! Thanks that made my day!! ;D
However, I know you're weird [that was my choice], cus if it were me, I'd be screaming and running around the place when I see a tiny arachnid 5m away from me ;p Or maybe I'm just weird [choose your pick] ... But why would you blow it? What if it swung into your mouth? XD
Naa Andres is too cool for that! He probably has a Gucci violin XDD ... Wait, what kind of sound do you think the violins would make?
I just wanted to check if it was alive, without touching it (ew!) Don't worry, those were just light blows from a safe distance ;p
LOL you're right! I think the spider silk ones would keep slipping off, unless the player puts on too much pressure on them. But I've never played a violin before, so maybe we must wait for the virtuoso first!
You should've just smacked it instead! If it was alive, it's now dead and if it was dead... then it's double dead! ;p
Yes, the spider silk violins are very nice! I have no experience with them because they cost a lot of money!
I play around +100 year old wooden violin (it has a really nice sound rather than the other one I used to have it also is my profile picture!) I am currently wanting an electric carbon violin but...it’s too expensive so maybe one day I can get one.
Update: I just reread and saw you said spider silk strings, (I have no experience with them) personally I just use regular metal (I think?) violin strings. (I play in public a decent bit so...I try to keep it as “safe” as I can with my violin accessories.)
That's so cool! You are the only type of person I know who would play an antique violin. How'd you learn to play?
Hi Ruwayda, I learned by taking lessons and I taught myself a lot off of YouTube.
That's more cool. My teenage brain cannot comprehend this piece of information. Self taught? That must have taken a lot of effort and hard work
The most complex style I can play right now is some Lindsey Stirling’s songs. I recently learnt “Crystillize” by Lindsey Stirling if you haven’t heard it before look it up! (It’s one of my all time favorites to play and listen to.)
You must be extraordinary if you can play Crystillize by Lindsey Stirling. I might give the violin a chance.
Go for it! Give the violin a try. It is a very fun instrument. (Probably the best one out there ;))
Great! ;D We're on the same level aren't we? Yeah! But you've got wayyy more languages than me! How about you?
Yep. It is just you. That's because:
Every word on the list above has "The" before it. And "the" in Arabic is "Al", so if you look closely, you shouldn't be surprised that every word begins with "Al". If I take off "Al" from the beginning of "Alkalb" for example, then we'll be left with "Kalb" which just means "dog" whereas if we left "Al" then it will remain "The dog". Get it? :o
Lol I have to keep adapting to your new profile pics that you keep changing everyday! I was wondering where SCARL went XD
acualy it dosnt start with an a , for exeample we say alhaywaan "animal" we can say only haywaan but alhaywaan is THE ANIMAL haywaan is ANIMAL see
I am doing fine thank you! Yes i have many languages, but i am doing it for fun! My main languages are Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and German :)
Lol true! ;p I thought of changing it to "lesson of the Day", but then I'd have to change all my other 47 which would take FOREVER... and I'm lazy so ;D
Hi Sassy! in fact, most common is "معزاة" not "معزة", (I know the difference is just the ا there), also, there is no ء in "الجرذ" :)
LOL I have a phobia from poultry, they always freak the hell out of me (as you said) when I visit my aunt in the countryside XD
poultry = دواجن = dawajin *_-
-.0 I've never seen that spelling before?... Oh yeah great spot! I've changed it to "الجرذ" now thanks! ;D
Ha LOL! Savage Sousou getting chased by Savage Chickens! XDDD
WOW my comment is all mixed now! surprised to know that you've understood it!
Don't laugh at me, they are really creepy -_-
;p Well you eat them everyday XD [almost] ... Actually I can't laugh much cus I'm a scaredy-cat :3 I'm scared of heights, insects... Nvm that's only two things ;)
