Why I learn Spanish

Hi, I'm Tiffany, and I'm a Canadian-Chinese. I've been learning Spanish on Duolingo for about 5 months. I'm learning Spanish because of my best friend. She's Canadian, but her parents are from Venezuela, a Spanish speaking country. Since she's Latina, I decided to understand her culture and her language a bit better. I've always wanted to learn a different language, (I know 3 languages: English, Mandarin and French). My friend was surprised when I told her that I was learning Spanish on Duo. She decided that she would try learning Mandarin on Duolingo, too. She told me that she wanted to understand more about my culture and my language, too. So now we help each other out on Duo. Trying to learn the language your friend speaks will probably help improve your relationship, and it's actually really fun. Who knows, it may help you in the future. I've even started learning Korean and Japanese on Duo!

Lastly, I just want to say how much Duo means to me. Sure, it may get annoying when my inbox is filled with reminders from Duo, but this language learning website has made my life happier, and I hope it makes your life happier, too.

Thanks, and have a great day!

BTW, to turn off notifications, you can go to "Settings" then from that to "Notifications" and uncheck the situations when you do NOT want to get emails. At least that's how it worked for me.

This is a great story! Thanks for sharing. It reminds me of two of my brothers, one learned french horn, and the other learned banjo. Then the one who learned french horn asked the banjo player to teach him banjo. And the banjo player said: "Sure, if you teach me french horn" so they taught each other their instruments and play both to this day :-) Anyway, that little anecdote had NOTHING to do with language so sorry for the digression - but maybe once upon a time, that is how language was passed on, from one person to another in oral tradition. Like you and your friend can do together, using Duolingo as a supplement :-)

I love your story! It's so sweet. :)

I'm learning Spanish because I'm currently in a program to become a high school teacher in the Chicago Public School District. SO MANY of the students in CPS speak Spanish as a first language, and I want to be able to communicate with them and their families more easily. Plus during one of my observations, I had a group of kids tell me that they have more respect for their teachers who make some effort to add a little Spanish into the day (even if it's just "hola" and "adios"), because they feel like their culture is being considered.

TL;DR: I think speaking Spanish will make me a better teacher and allow me to connect with more students.

Very nice point of view! I learned Spanish because I've always been in love with Argentinian literature. But, funny story, thanks to that I decided to live in Buenos Aires for some months and, by the end, I've met my wife there.

I totally agree with you: the fact you learn someone else's language changes the whole picture. Your relationship becomes so much deeper when you can understand how your friend (or wife, in my case) categorizes and shapes reality. The Argentinian sense of humor, for exemple, can be easily misunderstood as arrogance if you don't truly understand it in it's own terms.

Congratulations for your position. I wish you all the best.

Wow! An interesting reason indeed! This is my first post on the forum. I'm an Indian from Mumbai. I had joined Duolingo when it launched its Android app way back in early 2012. I know English, Bangla, Hindi and Marathi (the last 3 are Indian languages) and had a interest to learn a foreign language since grade school. I didn't opt for French as it always garnered lesser marks in exams and took high scoring STEM subjects in high school. Then Duolingo happened! I rushed with German and Spanish. As I progressed it became harder and with no one to practise I started forgetting. Couldn't find time as my work became more complex.

Its 2019 now and am back with Spanish. Since there is a major probability of me relocating to the US in 2020 ..this should be of major use conversationally! Duolingo has improved immensely in these 8 years! Wish me luck for Dele A2 in November 2019... Thank you.

What great reasons for learning a language....love and friendship. I too am learning Spanish. I've been using the Doulingo system for a while, and I love it. I can actually read and understand this wonderful language so much better now. A couple of months ago my brother talked me into a trip to Peru in order to explore Machu Picchu. I have a feeling that all my hard work will come in handy. Best of luck - you're both very lucky to have such a good friend.

I originally wanted to learn Spanish when I was a teenager so that if I was ever wanted for questioning, I could escape to Mexico. Now, being an old Christian, I realize that it would be better to do time here, if need be. Still, Spanish is the language of good hard workers, and I used to own a landscaping business, so . . .. And, I have over 15 years of prisoners' civil-rights litigation experience (see, e.g., Pratt vs. Sumner, 807 F.2d 817 (9th Cir. 1987)), and so I envisioned becoming a civil-rights paralegal (or at least a tort-law paralegal since civil-rights litigation uses the same basic legal principles as tort law), and so I attended one of the few academic programs in the country with a course of study approved by the American Bar Association at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona, USA. I now have an Associate of Applied Science--Legal Assistant degree, with honors. Being in the southwest where Spanish is often spoken, I felt that it was incumbent on me to learn Spanish, so I took four semesters and got A's and B's. I have not seen a law office, yet, but I have spoken some Spanish over the years, and I enjoy it very much. Now I am also studying Mandarin so that I can read, hear and understand Chinese soft-style martial arts literature. As a plus, I want to roast my own country's corrupt judicial system in Chinese, but that's going to take a while. I am also learning Esperanto because--gosh darn it, I'm a friendly person, and people like me a lot.

That's an awesome reason to learn Spanish :) Wish you good luck!

I'm learning Spanish because I like to travel to Spain and would love to speak with the locals in their language. It's a bit of a pity that the Spanish course here is only available in Latin Spanish, would've been nice to have European Spanish as an option as well, but well, hope there's enough overlap between the two :)

June 13, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/-.Edwin.-

I am surprised about how many people thinks there is a fundamental difference between Latin Spanish and "Spaniard" Spanish. Such difference, that it would be justified to design two different Spanish courses here in Duolingo. Really, that is not the case.

Main differences:

In Spain is mostly used the compound past tense when you speak about recent past:

"Yo he comido arroz ayer"

In Latin America, is used the most the simple past:

"Yo comí arroz ayer"

In Spain there is a clear difference in pronunciation about the letters "c", "z" and "s". In LatAm don't.

In Spain the possessive in 2nd person plural es "vuestro".

"Me gusta vuestra casa"

In LatAm is not defined. You must say something like:

"Me gusta la casa de ustedes" o "Me gusta su casa", but this last does not make difference about singular o plural.

And, obviously, different words for designiting the same object. But this is normal in any language widely distributed.

Best regards!

June 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kupokupopi

Thank you! And yes, I understand that speaking one "kind" of Spanish will make the others understand you as well, as it's very similar - but that is exactly why I think it would be nice to have two different courses for that.

In one course you learn the LatAm way, so simple past and the polite form of ustedes, and in other course you learn the Spain way, so compount past tense and vosotros etc.

Should have 90% (maybe 95% ?) overlap, so most of stuff can be reused anyway :)

June 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/-.Edwin.-

Well, I think the overlap would go about 98% or more.

It would be better to include one lesson in the Spanish course for English speaker named something like "Spaniard Spanish".

More difference there is between British and American English.

In fact, variations among several Latin American countries Spanish can be bigger than between Spain and standard Latin America Spanish.

Best!

This is the kind Friendship Goals I'm looking for right now! I can't find anyone around me who is motivated to learn languages. I wish I had a friendship with someone in my real life like you or my favourite Youtubers "Damon and Jo".

I am learning Spanish because America is becoming more and more bilingual. It is realistic to think that people in the United States will need to know Spanish in the future.

I'm learning German because they know what they want,{to be number 1 in everything some super try hards and proud people and doers. I don't like Nazis or socialist. most Nazi were killed after the war and hunted down. but the German people should be proud about their accomplishment and it isn't a bad thing it isn't bad to be manly it isn't bad to want to make your self the better because it inspires people to try harder or be left in the dust and that what I see in German it is really just the pic of a better inproved version of me

Well, the traits you mention you also find in, say, the English culture. These traits sort of backfired on us Germans and Germany is historically in the decline since the time around Hegel. But there a lot of writings that are going to be interesting to you if you keep going on.
