[GUIDE] How do I post Images ? : The basics
To post an image, use this code :
!(URL link for image)
!["hover text"](URL link for image)
Recommendation: include "hover text", to assist those with vision impairment, or for slow internet, or the region/country they are in blocks the reference for the image. It is not necessary to include "hover text", just a nice thing to do.
Here are a few url links I have prepared for you. By copying the text highlighted in yellow into your posts, it will show these images.

note: As I continue down this rabbit hole of ideas on how to make images more accessible to more of us to use, I am likely to do a separate tabulated post with references to images people can quickly copy and paste to add things to their posts. For my benefit, and that it may assist others as well.
Also, this is just the first steps to learn how to use the power of images. To check out Images: Stage 2, for now click here. However in the near future I will be re-writing the information there as well.
You can post links to other images from the internet - by referring to the URL address of the image. Ensure you include the image extension. ie. .png, .jpg, .gif, etc. Not all image formats are supported in Duolingo Markdown code. If your image is not produced, then either you have a fault with your link, or have selected an image format not supported in Duolingo discussions.
How to find images others have posted on the internet.
i.e. in google:
Search for an image you are after, and remember to select the option for Images.
How do you get a published image URL ?
- Locate the image you want.
- Right-click the image.
Depending on what system you’re using, select the image URL by clicking one of these:
- Chrome: Copy image address
- Safari: Copy image address
- Internet Explorer: Properties and then Copy the URL address shown
- Firefox: Copy image location
Then, copy that URL link to the image into your code:
!(URL link for image)

By empowering others in our community to be proficient at formatting their posts in Duolingo, we help others use more powerful tools to create posts that are more fun and engaging. For their enjoyment as well. And for those that like creating resources and helping others, it helps us do so in a more effective and engaging way. This is why these posts on Formatting in Duolingo are relevant.
[GUIDE] Formatting in Duolingo : click on this blue text for more formatting information
Perhaps also, if the community asks really nicely, and that it gets a lot of up votes, perhaps Duolingo might release some higher quality links to small images of Duolingo, the owl, (Duo) but in tiny images that we can use in the discussion forums.
Of Duo in different moods, and doing different activities, perhaps wrapped in different scarfs or waving flags from different countries.
There is no guarantee of this. For Duo the company is very very very very very ... very busy with a small team developing amazing language learning resources.
Yet, sometimes, just sometimes .... if you hope, and others hope with you, a path and resources are provided, that someone gives to you.
Hoping other people will engage in commentary to this wish, and also upvote this wish.
We are world wide and globally inclusive community of each and every one of us.
Including Duo pride.
Have you checked out, know about ? : https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/27808985/Something-Like-Home-%E2%80%94-a-short-documentary-about-refugees-using-Duolingo ?
These sorts of things matter deeply to me. That this is a welcoming place for us all as a global community to learn a language. And in the years that I have been involved with Duolingo, it also matters deeply to the people in Duolingo.
ohhh and you also might be interested in checking out some tweets that Duo is doing - during the "Pride month" in the USA. And that Duo is wearing the colors.
This also makes me ... it does make me proud to be able to assist a company that brings so much good into the world.
Have you watched the series "Good Omen" ?
I mention it here, as I consider it relevant to be aware of what we think, and how we choose to show respect and kindness to others.
Wow ! Thank you pentaan. A very high complement, from someone whom I hold in high regard in these forums.
I am still working on simplifying the language, while also providing more images people may be interested in using. Of which of course, others are also invited to share recommendations. Providing they fall within our guidelines.
Also - to watch out for when the system finds "related articles" about other posts and explanations people have made on how to post images.
There will also be another post - still to be written - on how to create clickable links on a picture.
edited : and also - how to post your own pictures. To see the "rough draft" of how to do this click here It though needs a lot more work.
The power of linking is where you can really make informative posts, to assist people in accessing more information.
Thanks daKanga. These posts are always helpful. I still follow your other posts with formatting and posting information.
Thank you mwbrand1.
What I hope is that people have more than just having fun with formatting. That they also may use these techniques to create language learning resources for their own use, and for others benefit.
Yet, even if all this does is help us interact in a positive way as a community, it is a gift that returns to me a great gift. I care for each of us - as a global community. Each of you make a difference. Thank you for engaging in seeking to learn another language.
Search for an image you are after, and remember to click on Images.
It is also important to click the image you want in the results page to load it from the original source. That way you get the original image url instead of cached image url.
You might like to make a small image of your chosen picture by using the snipping tool to just select the owl in your signature image.
Again, put it through paint and resize. And then post to an image hosting site such as IMGUR.
Here is what I came up with.

Thanks Linda for this detailed explanation. I was looking for something more in-depth. Thanks!
You are very welcome Gwaugle. You might be interested in learning how to make the hippopotamus image smaller.
Lets see if we can explain this in a way others can follow.
Do you use a windows computer, and have you used the application "paint"?
If you hover your mouse over the hippopotomus image here and "right click" your mouse, a pop up menu will come up. An in that the option select to "Copy Image"
This will put the image into your clip board.
Then go to windows "Paint" (or other drawing package you have access to that works in a similar way.
Once there, you can "drop" your clip board image into paint by holding the "Ctrl" button and pressing the "V" key on your keyboard.
Once the image is there, you can then resize it.
In Paint, in the top menu bar, just to the right of the "Select" function are two squares that overlap. This function allow you to resize the image.
If you resize to something in "pixels" I find it works the best in my experience. Your current image, it tells me, is 275 x 340 pixels.
I would suggest changing the image to 30 pixels in the top field (where it says 275).
What I do then, is I load this smaller image (I think of it as a 30 pixel image.)
I do this, while the image is still selected, holding the "ctrl" key and pressing the "C" key, that loads this small image into your clipboard.
I then go to https://imgur.com/ , and enter my account there.
Select the green tab "New Post"
And paste my clipboard there, by holding down the "ctrl" key and pressing the "V" key.
Here is a link to the image: https://i.imgur.com/Uetjz99.png
And here is how it now appears in the Duolingo forums:
![Hippopotomus for Gwaugle](https://i.imgur.com/Uetjz99.png)
You can then use this smaller image to be an additional "signature" to include in your posts.
I sometimes do this with the small image of a kangaroo.
Perhaps others could suggest other was to resize the image, so that it appears as a small image in the Duolingo forums ?
I use a mac, but there is a similar function called "Preview", which should work. If I REALLY wanted to, I could also just use photoshop as well.
I like how it is cut around the image. Can you tell us more about "Finder" and how to use it to clean up the outside of the image ?
edit : hmmm - maybe it I who got a "black" background around the Hippopotamus as I used the snipping tool. And you did not have this problem, as you use a different way of importing the picture and resizing it.
I'm not 100% sure what you mean, as I'm not too familiar with PREVIEW (I've been getting it wrong, getting it confused with a completely different mac thing) myself, but I'll try my best.
Because everything I have is naturally in dark-mode (a mac setting), it is naturally black background, otherwise it'd be a checkered gray-white square/rectangle. Either way, that's transparent. Preview automatically removes the outside that has nothing over it. If you put anything on the background, because it's transparent, it automatically all the other background for you.
Other than that, there's a simple re-size tool:
If there's any other questions, let me know!
Thank you SecretlyAHippo <3
I am going to have to re-read this in a couple of days time. But on this brief read - I am learning more as well.
Thank you for sharing with us.
ohhhh why THANK YOU MrArial. They are a GREAT set of small and clear images !
Copy image location
Do you mean just copy the image, or copy the link to the image?
ahhh Great point. Yes - copy the link to the image. I will correct the text above. Thank you Flumen91 !

Roo's are well and truly capable of slipping up.
At least this post:
One cool thing about Postimages.org is that it offers ready made markdown code for your image:
Actually all credit should go to Kelikaku: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/33468407$comment_id=33503100
Just plainly curious. Which language did you Contribute to? I was thinking of contributing to the Korean for English.
