Geralmente, sim, em BrE (não só na Inglaterra) nós dizemos "the band were excellent", ou "the band are playing well". Isso é porque nós os vemos como um grupo de individuais, mais do que uma unidade. É o mesmo com times esportivos:
"And Scotland have scored!"

Mas "a band" não pode tocar "the guitar", só uma pessoa toca "the guitar". Então "The band play guitars and other instruments".
