Is the new tree accelerated?

I've been enjoying the new lessons in the Japanese 2.0 tree. I'm now reset to level 1 in many areas I'd completed before, which is fine. But I've noticed that even at level 1 the content is mainly Kanji, rather than starting with hiragana and introducing Kanji at higher levels. There are also times when a lesson will use Kanji before it's even been introduced, such as in a reading lesson. I'm wondering if this is intentional or a problem with the lesson content.

It's intentional. Kanji are essentially the alphabet of Japanese. Not learning them as soon as you learn the words that they are used to build is a well-intentioned disservice for an educational tool. If you feel the course moves too fast, that's a good indication that it's time to go back and review the old material until you're comfortable enough to move on.

I'm not saying we shouldn't learn the kanji immediately. I'm pointing out that it's introducing kanji without the accompanying hiragana which is necessary for us to get the pronunciation right and to be able to read, because many words seem to be written both ways. Furthermore, it's bringing up some kanji for the first time in reading lessons, where we have no way of knowing what we're looking at.

  1. There's currently no way around that, unfortunately. That said, furigana (a kanji reading aid) may be introduced at some point in the future. Technically, that's on Duolingo HQ's end. Until then, I recommend uses multiple resources to learn kanji, not just Duolingo.
  2. That's odd... perhaps you could provide an example?

Hello, Luke_5.1991

I'd like to ask, is there a way to get the new Japanese tree without waiting? My point is that I've completed all lessons in gold already and want to try out the new one. In several discussion's comments I read we could "request" getting the new one so I thought of asking you. Sorry for bothering.

Additional. Make an own vocabulary list with the words in hiragana and kanji. So you can learn them easily and how the words are pronounced/written.

I've seen the same thing happen to me. Regarding to units being reset to level 1, I think it means that unit was updated and has new content. Regarding the kanjis, they have a yellow/gold color when they are new.
