A Unique Approach to Using Duolingo
Hi! I wanted to share my experience with Duolingo. I'm a retired English as a Second Language Teacher. I had enough Spanish to easily communicate in the limited area of the classroom, but I was never able to have real conversations. One of my students, a Honduran friend, decided to do Duolingo with me. We do my English to Spanish, then we do his Spanish to English. The experience has been great! We are able to explain to each other some connotations of words and expressions. It's the type of thing that really gives an authentic sound to our conversations. As a result, we both are enjoying long, practical conversations on a regular basis. Duolingo has been such a fantastic tool too work with. I hope that some of you language enthusiasts can find a partner to try this approach with. It takes a great program and makes it even more fun!
i think there's a reason for duolingo for not having a messaging option even tho its a basic option.
That's really great to hear. I'm an ESL teacher myself and I've used Duolingo with my classes. I go to one of the later skills from the English for Spanish speakers skill and let one student translate. The next student tells me something he or she notices about the grammar. The third student imagines a sentence that could go before or after to give it context.
Great idea! If you are someone helping immigrants learn the language of your country you could do this! Provided it is on Duo and the other person speaks a language that is on Duo.
