it can either be: Niliwakuta mlipokuwa mkitembea or Niliwakuta mkitembea. mlipokuwa in the 1st sentence means 'while you were'; the 2nd sentence is a short hand of the first. Just as you can say "He was caught stealing" instead of "He was caught while he was stealing"
