My first post, first golden owl and back on the streak wagon with 100 days!
Last year I lost a greater than one year long streak - usually only doing my minimum 20 min. or 2 lessons a day. I gave Duo a several month break and then dug in again, focusing on my original target language rather than "tasting" other languages (I plan to work on others again in the future but found, for me, a single target language was a better, well, target!) I think the extra XPs for error free or fewer error lessons and the leagues have spurred me on to good effect in recent weeks (while spending hours in airports for layovers and hospital waiting rooms while visiting ailing friends and family - great time to do my tree and tiny cards and stories!) And I just finished my tree (first time through completely - have many earlier lessons at level 3 or higher. I only learned about golden owls by reading in the forums - I have learned there is more to learn about the, often changing of late it seems, Duo formats which, though not directly increasing my knowledge of my target language, have given me a better understanding of more tools available to help language learning - with more of that to learn as well! For instance, I just learned today that "buying" (enabling?) Timed testing in the Duo store will cause me to have more access to challenge my vocabulary and grammar while doing my regular lessons. I have not experienced it yet but was made aware of that today after reading in a forum contribution. I had assumed it was something to buy each time it was used (like a streak freeze) rather then an ongoing tool like "buying" idioms. If there is a Duo page that explained all this, I missed it. However, there was a useful forum post someone made as an unofficial (or linked to it) welcome and intro. That's where I learned about "completing a tree" and getting a golden owl. :). Btw, the owl didn't show up initially and I was disappointed but I am travelling and doing Duo on my Kindle fire and it is a different format than on my home computer (in fact, in the last 3 days, all buttons have disappeared!!! making it harder - if I hadn't been well accustomed and just pushed the screen where I knew they USED to be, I would have despaired, but I persisted and have now finished my tree! Seems fitting as my father came home from the hospital today and I will get to travel back home where I can get my son back on track with Duo over the summer school break). Thanks to the Duo folks (official and unofficial) that have been such a help to me. God bless you!
That's awesome! Congratulations! Especially with finishing such a long tree. Have fun continuing with your language journey!
Wow! Makes me think about spreading the "wealth" too, which is most about sharing a smile or encouragement so thank you!
I haven't done those. Where do I find them? I have done "practice" and I bought timed practice in the shop (but nothing has ever "popped up" for me as others have posted and I don't know how I can access it? Do you know? thanks!)
Amazing job! Good job for your perseverance and determination! Good luck on German and everything else! Have a great day!!
I finished my second level on the German tree but it still only shows one golden owl. I know it is the language skills, not the owls or lingots, that are the true prize but I am curious why I didn't "owl up"? I am well on my way to third level (I had done multiple levels earlier on rather that a single level all at one so now I am going back to strengthen them all).
