how do you tell 'he' from 'she' if they are both 'dia' ???

In normal conversations, we can tell from the context.

For sentences without context like the above, we can translate "dia" as either "he" or "she" and either would be correct.

    Yes it depence. But for example you said "DIA memakai gaun itu" Then the dia refers to a female since females use gowns and male does not.
