I just started Hindi today.
I cannot see the characters.
I am using Chrome.

Is this a common issue?
Thanks in advance.

Most probably, your computer doesn't have any Devanagari fonts installed yet.

Which OS are you using?

@vinay92
I have Puppy Linux Xenial64.
I'm using the current version
of the Chrome browser.

Does that count me out?

I just installed:
Hindi Font Pack for Chrome
Will this work??

You just need to install a font. Download any Devanagari font from this webpage (like this one).

Extract the TTF file and copy it to your /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF folder. Then type fc-cache in the terminal.

That should install the font into your system and you'll be able to view Hindi on your screen. I just did it in the Bionic Puppy OS which I have on my USB and it worked fine. IMO that's a better solution than installing a browser extension.

Let me know if it works.

I Just finished following these
instructions.

Basically exactly the same
advice as you just posted!!

OK, I can read the script now.
I do not know if I can type yet.

UPDATE: It's working in Pale Moon.
It's not working in Chrome yet.
I can't type with it yet.

If you can read the script now, you can use Google input tool extension to help you type on Chrome. Since you are still likely unfamiliar with the Devanagari keyboard layout, it will display the keyboard on the screen too, which will help you type.
