I started working on my French, from scratch, on March 1st, exactly 100 days ago. Although I'm not rushing through the course as I see it from other people doing it, I dare to say I've made tremendous progress. I've finished 25 skills, and although I haven't learned past or future tenses, my vocabulary consists of over 650 words, and I can (and do) carry long conversations with my friend from Paris on skype. I started this course simply to see it to myself, whether it is really capable of teaching the language, and this first 100 days convinced me without doubt that it can. One person I must mention by name, Sitesurf, who has been absolutely instrumental in my progress, she helped me so much that I have a hard time even imaging how I would have done without her being there.
On another note, this day is also special for me because this is the first day I'm getting up as "part of Duolingo", since as of yesterday I've been accepted as one of the contributors for the English from Hungarian course. Although it will take some time away, I've promised myself that I don't let it affect learning my French, so I'll double my efforts and carry on for my 2nd 100 days.
That's all... I just thought I'd share with you this moment of my "Duolingo life", this little anniversary. If I can do it, you can do it for sure!
Congratulations! You may not be racing though the tree as fast as some people, but you are already communicating in French, which I think is amazing. :)
Thank you, Moomingirl, that's exactly how I see it, too... Even if it's not "blazing through", my friend keeps noticing that my French IS improving, I keep using new words, expressions and grammatical structures all the time... I recommend finding a language-exchange partner to everybody!
You have been an ideal student: curious, open-minded, hard working, patient, and demanding!... that's a perfect recipe to also become a great contributor to the community here. My best personal wishes for more fun and more good work with us all!
Thank you very much for your kind words, Sitesurf, coming from you they mean a lot to me!
Congratulations Tomi! I just started french also. I am not far along but I am working on it! I started creating a list of all the words and their English translations. It helps when I have a few minutes of spare time because I can look over while doing a lesson or waiting on something. I hope you continue to learn and become more fluent in french! Bonne chance! And why not, have a lingot and an upvote too! :)
Good luck on your journey. Check this out, it might help: http://www.memrise.com/course/300146/duolingo-french-from-english-lessons-beta/
Tomi, I also use memrise to gain more French vocabulary and speed up my learning progress, so your course is going to help me a lot. Thank you very much for your effort and sharing your work with us. I wish you the best :). Regards!
No problem! I created it just to practice the words myself, but I thought if someone else can use it too and it helps...why not? :-) Don't forget that if you want, you can ignore the reverse lessons - some do, some don't. Cheers!
I can see that you're well ahead of me... Sorry, I'm only adding the words as I'm learning myself...
It is still great, because I have to repeat the vocabulary all the time, and memrise is faster for repeating singular words - it will save me a lot of time. And I am not well ahead of you, because I am focused on vocabulary, but I have lack of training in speaking and listening. I am still not ready to have longer conversations in French.
Thanks again :).
Well Tomi, Congrats.
I see you so often on here, and what you've contributed to Memrise.
When I get back to French (I just have to stick to Italian at the moment) I will look you up. I'm now just waiting for your 200 announcement. Go for it!
Hmm. Perhaps my 'A' level maths wasn't as good as I thought it was, See you in 100 days, but probably before. Anyway, well done! :)
wow! that's amazing! have a llllllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggggoooooooooooooooooooooooooooootttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt!
Hi - congats on two counts - 100 days and a contibutor for another course!! Well done :)
Congrats! And thank you for all you have done on Memrise. It's helped me so much. I was going through the DL tree so quickly that I didn't learn the vocabulary. I really needed Memrise. Merci beaucoup! I'm looking forward to the Hungarian course!
Thanks, and I'm happy that it helps someone else, too, not just me. As for the Hungarian course, it seems to be that the main obstacle at the moment is some technical/structural issues that must be solved by the DL team before meaningful work can be started on it... Trust me, I can't wait it to come, either.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I only know 340 words now, and have been wondering how well I will be able to converse with my french friends by the time I relocate. I am very glad to hear you've had positive results, and I am excited to reach your level.
Merci beaucoup. Vous m'inspirez :)
I suggest that you do the same what I did. Go and find this place "www.francaisfacile.com" (I think, but you can also just search for "francaisfacile") and you can find a lot of French people there who are more than happy to start corresponding or even - like in my case - start communicating via skype or some other chat program... I'm not even at the half of my tree, so nothing to really "look up" for, but I can assure you, if you don't just rush through the course, you'll see fantastic results! I saw too many post basically saying "I finished the tree but I don't speak French"... Sorry I don't buy it.. IF you do it the right way, I'm already convinced that you'll be fluent in (if not the maste of) the language. Good luck, let's work on it even harder!
Beat me to it! Great job, it's nice to see you're not giving up and that you're making such good progress.
Yeah, unfortunately, it's really like a cue at the bank... If I start 4 days earlier I am bound to get there 4 days earlier, no passing :P No way I would give up, I enjoy it too much! Hope you do, too! Cheers!
Thank you very much, it's very kind, but I don't deserve that. There are many people achieved much more than I have.
congratulations! that's a lot of accomplishments just in a hundred days. job well done :]
Thanks! I never feel it's enough :-) I was not planning to finish the tree by now, but I was kind of hoping for getting to half and I'm shy of that.
