Lingots should be able to be converted into free weeks of Duolingo plus memberships
There is a lot of discussion on here about how lingots have been devalued and everyone has way too many to do anything with. I was thinking it could be a cool idea to be able to convert lingots into free weeks of Duolingo Plus. It would give people a chance to try out Duolingo Plus for longer than the one week free trial, it would give everyone a place to spend their lingots, and it may even get more people to join Duolingo Plus more long term once they get hooked.
Maybe lingots could just be converted into uses of 1 or 2 of the features that come with Plus, like the progress quiz or a period of time ad-free or something. It wouldn't have to be all the features, so there would still be value in buying Plus.
Edit: They could even have some sort of advertising for Plus to go along with it. Maybe some sort of message like "Love this feature? Get it unlimited, lingot-free with a membership to Duolingo Plus" or something like that.
How about spending lingots to download lessons for offline learning. Maybe 2 lingots per lesson?
Edit: Actually 2 lingots sounds pretty low, but you get the idea.
You used to be able to buy a progress quiz with your lingots. I'm not sure when they changed it, though.
I stopped seeing that option after the website redesign (blue bar at the top gone) about 6 months ago.
Progress quiz should be free once a month for everyone I think. Then it can cost, I don't know, 20 lingots for another try. Plus users can have unlimited number for free, but when I tried Plus, I found the quiz result much more motivational than leaderboards or strike.
Yeah I was about to say. That’d probably be a bad business model if that just handed away a whole plus account trial just by earning lingots or whatever they are. This is a great idea! You should be able to pay them for certain features of a plus account! Brilliant!
How about some Kentucky Fried Chicken to go with that beer ? A few years ago a guy on here had the KFC logo for his avatar. I jokingly gave him 10 lingots and told him it was to pay for a bucket of chicken.
I was thinking that maybe 200 or so would be reasonable. I have about that many and think that 3 months of daily usage (and ad revenue) could warrant 1 free week . Would mean one month free each year of consistent (daily) use.
Only 3 people get lingots though on each league, it wouldn’t be enough to motivate them.
I have 1923 lingots, so I could buy 9 free weeks of Plus. And if someone is an extreme Duolingo user and can get 200 per week, then they essentially get free Plus. 500 may be more reasonable.
but then, might they not deserve it for working SO hard on duolingo! Also, one could add a cap on the number of uses, for example 2/month.
I am a bit new around here so excuse my inexperience but
could I get a breakdown of how 200/wk would be possible? I don't think I've earned that many cumulatively since I started on the site. But I've never been horribly diligent, either.
Every ten days you get lingots based on how long you have kept up your streak. It's not much but since we can't spend them they add up. You have to remember how long some people have used Duo. As far I know the only thing you can do with lingons after the initial bonus lesson is timed practice, streak freeze and giving it to people on forums. The trouble is if you try to give a lingon it asks you if your sure and its just too much work to really spam them.
1000/week? That’s a lot of lingots! Especially if you use streak freezes and buy other things (although there’s not much to buy :(. ). Maybe 200/week?, that would be more reasonable.
The streak freeze is ridiculously cheap and also helps getting lots of lingots by having a long streak, so that's not really even a cost.
The streak freeze should cost one lingot per day in your streak if it should be available at all.
@LingualLightning @crcomish For context, people using iPhones generate lingots 5x-10x as fast. The rewards are higher, and so are the costs. I know because I started both of my parents on it (iphone users) and they blew past me in number of lingots.
Right, gems on the app are blue and I currently have 3,597 but on the website I have only 448 lingots which are red.
A thousand a week is too much. It takes too long to get those lingos to blow them in 1 week. I've been here 4 and a quarter years and I have 13238 lingos. It would be blown if I used 13 weeks. I'd get a whole 3 weeks per year if I averaged it. I'm paying for plus. I think it was about $50 for a year with a special I took up Duo's offer on, on Jan 1. It's best to get in on plus on a special. I think it was half off. I don't feel like checking so correct me anyone.
I think this is a good idea, however I think that if this happen the membership should be at least 1,000 lingots as Duolingo need to be able to make money somehow and Plus is a big way they can do it and for me I don't think that after having a week of plus or whatever would give me incentive to buy it. I would like to buy plus when I'm in a position of having enough money but not now. People who want to support duolingo (and have enough money) probably already have plus and the latter will just never buy it.
I get your point.. sadly i have no valid money, not even a valid international card.. that's why i would like some kind of scholarship from Duo.. something that we compete for and you can earn, while making some work for them.. I'm somehow good at languages, once that is reviewed and assured, they could give me some tasks.. I don't know exactly what to propose either, but maybe you can also get my point..
I don't think Duo would be this generous. It would also be a bit unfeasible since a bot could do lesson really easily and generate lingots to the extreme.
That’d be a sh ton of work to create a bot just to siphon red rubies in order to get the plus version gratis. But I ‘spose you could then add that genre of ‘accomplishment’ to your c.v. for potential social media hacking jobs. Still, yr point is somewhat valid because once an ingot is monetized in any respect on the user side, obvs some will see that as an opportunity to game the system. Yet another reason why it’s unlikely ingots would ever be convertible to something that otherwise has potential rev stream value.
I would agree but if you could trade them for scholarships you sell them to every aspiring college student for a tenth the value of the scholarship. It costs you nothing so it's basically just profit. I was replying to the above comment not the discussion as a whole. I would agree if you couldn't make money of it it would be pointless.
I understand.. in my case's defense I can say that we can provide some KYC[know your customer] rules, as most of the community sites or profit sites have.. they are usually simple, and hard to hack. Also if I'm speaking here with you from time to time, publicly, for more than a month, and such things.. It's difficult to think that I am a robot, or that I'll sell my profile. It would be an enormous amount of work for practically nothing.. Don't you think? btw, thanks both of you for answering and suggesting.
This would 100% require resetting of lingots and standardising how they are earned.
Cause some people have thousands and I think people even have 100s of thousands of lingots.
You would have to make it pretty expensive for it to be worth while for duolingo.
I currently get 60 lingots every 10 days. If it was like 100-200 lingots I could be using duolingo plus 1-2 weeks out of every month for free.
And because I am using duolingo plus for free duolingo loses ad revenue so it is like a double hit for them.
So I am thinking you would first need to reset everyones lingots and then set the price at maybe 1000 lingots, so it is more a reward for people who ahve been here a long time or have long streaks or make positive contributions and people pay them lingots.
Or better yet, maybe people should stop trying to convert lingots into something with real world value. It is like accepting monopoly money for working as a check out chick at woolies.
well.. you are right merkavar. I haven't thought directly on that issue.. I don't want to interfere with Duo's adds monetization, thus is a way of paying them with money I dont't have. But I'd like to earn[you name the task n I'll do it] all the other best features, that I can not.. For example I haven't seen a Duo "gem" ever, I need and can't use de "weekend amulet" and is sure provided for PLUS users even if they are on PC and not on Android.. and such kind of things..
Exactly, which is why it could only be for a few features of Duolingo Plus. A few options could be,
200 lingots for a week of ad-free lessons, or
1000 lingots for downloading 50 lessons, or
500 for a streak repair for 2 months.
There could also be a limit on how many of these you can buy at once, say, you can only have one of these at a time. This way, you can never get to the level of Duolingo Plus without paying, but you get a tantalizing taste of what it's like. This way, it rapidly depletes everyone's lingots quickly (while giving them what they want), and, unless they're really serious about learning the language or getting big streaks, they would be much more likely to get Duolingo Plus.
Thus, in the end, it would wind up being profitable for Duolingo, and give people what they want! This makes it practical and fun. A win-win.
Yeah you do get to a point where lingots are flowing in so fast no price really matters. I like the idea of being able to extend a free trial, or buy one week per month. There's not an easy way to do this but it's something to look at for sure.
I'm guessing the engineers and ISPs and translators and linguists all would love to get paid in lingots, or gems. I think there should be an option when buying plus to donate $$ so people with no money from poorer countries could use plus for free, so that Duo can stay financially viable while those of us fortunate enough to be able to afford, you know, food and stuff, can contribute. Then you could have Duo scholarships.
You know what.. Without too much thinking, I could be a study partner for Spanish, English, or H. Valyrian in exchange for some of Duo's vip functions and items. I'd really like the idea of a scholarship, and I think they should consider this seriously, taking in to account what tasks and accomplishments they will ask in return, and how they will offer it. This could even increase their passive marketing and the site's popularity, which is already quite good I think, and could get even better.
The Plus membership is one of the ways that enable Duolingo to offer their app for free. And I doubt that people that could not or would not pay for a Plus membership now would start to pay for it then since Plus does not offer many actual advantages.
might be true, but actually they have ads, and only recently added Plus. It was still free before they had plus. Hope this didn't sound rude! You aren't wrong though.
They added Plus because some people hate adds enough to be willing to pay to not see them. Plus is one of the income generators for DL to keep the app free for mot of its users.
And before that they had no ads and no Plus but they did have activity streams and immersion.
Those were the days indeed.
I think something that would be cool would be an extended streak freeze. Say you’re on a vacation and you can’t access any lessons because you’re offline. No problem! Just buy an extended streak freeze! It would be very helpful for many people. I, for example, lost my 84 day streak at a music camp with basically no internet :(
I think we should be able to just buy extra days to not lose a streak with. I do not like the idea of spending lingos to get Duo Plus because Duo should make money to pay their staff. I like the idea of buying things like a tag in our posts, gifs we can post on our tags or use as avatars, clothes for our owls - which I've bought a track suit for in the past and it disappeared in some upgrade. We can buy award certificates we can print out for our achievement levels. I think we should have to pay for tee shirts etc. Duo should have merchandise so they can make money. Hey, make it so people can buy BACK their streak. Over the years many people have been in hurricanes etc. and lost 1000 plus day streaks.
I noticed that on different devices Duo offers different owl suits. I didn’t lose my track suit option (sry to see yours was dropped) but I saw that on Android my little one has the option of buying a superhero costume. I wonder why that’s not an option on all devices. Sure it’s not much but it is cute to see Duo wearing his tuxedo when congratulating me :). I wouldn’t mind seeing additional suit options.
Just wondering did you ask about your suit loss? Thinking there might be a possibility that it is a glitch.
Also, like the buy back streak option. Over the years power outages due to hurricanes, floods, etc., have contributed to streak losses for the entire family so that would be something useful.
I'm with you. I just lost my streak and ended up in this forum. I wanted my streak back and bought a streak freeze but it is not retroactive. (I'm a tad upset.) I need to stop obsessing over streaks. Okay, I'm done with my rant and going to bed. Καληνύχτα φίλοι!
not really, paying customers wont have to over exercise in such an insane way just to get a bit of PLUS, so they will have advantage and will still prefer to pay, the free, will continue to use it free, and the penny-less zealots will try to get it while making contests more alive and thus the site.. I've seen or heard of such schemes in a few MMOG and OG.. it seems to work..
That would be wonderful, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work from a business perspective. Some of the most likely customers for a plus subscription is precisely those who use Duolingo a lot, so there's probably a lot of overlap between the two groups. That would probably mean quite a bit of money lost for Duolingo.
I don't think it will be a good idea because duolingo is already free and they have to get money somehow.
the truth be told.. lingot-in (although PLUS offers an ad-free service, they say.. so we should consider that..)
After more than 18 months, I have a lot of lingots. I'd like to see them converted into something useful. Anything of value to a language learner would be fine I think.
I think they should collaborate with some other games/projects and allow to convert lingots to other games' virtual money. Or to get a discount at Mcdonalds
I thought about it and I think KFC would be a better choice. Imagine KFC Duo chicken wings
There are a few benefits of Duolingo Plus for the user, but it is primarily a way to support Duolingo financially. Allowing the use of lingots to access Plus completely defeats that purpose. (I strongly doubt it would encourage many people to change from "free-by-lingot Plus" to buying into it for real, there just isn't really that much of a difference.)
We have done that before !! Personally, I would pay lingots to get my Spanish club back
That's about the weakest endorsement possible, since lingots are essentially worthless (there's nothing to buy).
This is honestly such an excellent solution to the Lingot inflation problem. 10/10 for creativity. I wholeheartedly support this idea. <3
it sounds like that is what they are suggesting, that the ones who get their learning here free, get more freebies out of the site and those who pay now get nothing else as you could not use lingots on something you already have. Maybe you'd then decide to go free too :P
i totally agree. beceause whenever you get too many, what are you supposed to do with them if you don't have anything else to spend them on?
What do you get other than no ads with plus? For desktop not mobile. Mobile people have health.
This always seems to get down votes for the longer streak freeze idea.
However, a 7-day holiday streak freeze might be good. Available only once a year.
Your suggestion is the best I've seen for a longer streak freeze option, but it does defeat the point of a "streak" right?
Maybe if I get enough lingots I can buy my family back from Duo... ayuda por favor..
I wish you could convert lingots into real money, sorta like swagbucks….I would be on here 24/7 making 'bout $5 an hour.....lol
But it would have to be a ridiculously high price, and you're making a non-monetary currency have a monetary value, so Duolingo doesn't make any money. Maybe the lingots could buy you a discount for Plus, I could see that working out better.
I love this idea. Whoever came up with this, is brilliant. Who agrees with me?
Maybe 100 Lingots for a month, plus a $10 service and handling fee. That way Duo could make some money and you could spend your Lingots!
Great Idea! They don't have many options for lingots! Great idea! You get a lingot!
You read my mind. I think the shop(store) should have more services and features. It is completely useless now.
I wish you could buy progress quiz. That's the one thing that I want to try.
I would be happy to have some of the plus features AND still see ads in exchange for lingots. Gimme those progress quizzes!
What about charging lingots for stories in other languages besides French, Spanish & German? If too much admin work, just put stories without the test/comprehension questions. I can frankly do without them,
They do need to make/raise money somehow, but I agree that Lingots do seem pretty superfluous right now, it would be great to have a more valuable use for them.
I totally agree with the idea of letting us buy a one week freeze. No matter how hard I try, it is a challenge to maintain my streak when traveling abroad. Thanks for initiating this discussion!
But if that happens, then can't people just get free duolingo plus for as long as they want, defeating the purpose of Duolingo being able to profit off of it? Duolimgo Plus makes it EASIER to get lingots. I think one week of Duolingo plus should cost a lot of lingots, to prevent that from happening.
In my opinion, since that's the only way they earn money, they won't even listen to us if we voted. If I was DL staff, I would make it so that DLists could exchange lingots for a small amount of money per 100 lingots. This way, DL would be a lot more popular, because no matter what, people will love that they can get money for learning a language.
Crcomish. Would you be volunteering to handle the Admin for this, I wonder.
Someone at duo has likely already crunched the numbers on this idea and has an idea on rev stream impact. Once you inverse-monetize them there jewels (from owner’s perspective) methinks the reaction of the owl and his equity folk might be less than enthusiastic. Some users could whine if they perceived their lingot rebates allocated unfairly, so there’d be hires to handle that. If there was a similar app in that space w enough market share, or duo was ‘struggling’ then maybe you’d see deals like that. Even so, I totally like these kind of ideas (I’d definitely like to save some coin on the subscription) and the spirit behind them, think the cap idea was creative and is headed towards what ‘may’ be do-able ... so I’m giving some precious (?) rubies to some of these comments. Now I’m curious as to how much the advert model earns overall vs the subscription?
Yes!! That would be sooo helpful. I have so many ligots that I have no use for.
Not that I have many lingots, but YES I would be a lot more motivated to learn. That is an amazing idea.
It’s not a horrible idea, but buying that with lingote wouldn’t really support duolingo :/
Maybe use actual money?
I think it's a good idea but they'll have to get the economics and metrics right, where they still make a profit, paying staff and able to keep this app going but still able to convert lingots into free weeks of Duolingo plus.
Nothing that actually costs money will be possible to buy for lingots. What I can see as a possibility is to let people buy bonus skills with lingots, but it seems that they want to move away from the bonus skills so I guess that's not likely either.
I’m guessing most that have excess of lingots have already purchased the few bonus skills that duo offers. I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t purchase extra skills rather than just have a bunch of useless red gem pixels hanging out.
I’d love to use mine on something like advanced chapter tests, to open chatbots, extended streak freezes (as someone else suggested here), to reopen checkpoint quizzes, to maybe unlock mini-translation exercises, or even to unlock communication with list friends/followers (however limited).
Heck I’d spend an 100 lingots just to remove leagues from my screen.
There are any number of ideas for lingot usage that would be better than just having them sit there gathering dust.
it would also mean that duolingo misses out on money it gets to help keep the site a float if people were getting that free.. and that doesnt mean at all it will enough people to afterwards sign up for duolingo plus .
I find it interesting that one a free learning site which gives free tokens (lingots) that people are asking to receive more free.
And people suggesting this are not considering that the ones who are paying, would be not able to do anything with their lingots and they are the ones helping to support the site. Does this sound fair? It could cause some of those to stop paying
It’s a bit unfair to say the people using this free app just want to get more for free. Why is it curious when clearly someone is trying to make sense of this site continually awarding lingots that have little use or value?
Duolingo flies its “free language learning app” banner high—it isn’t advertising itself as the best paid app in the world.
I really don’t understand why so many think it’s unfair of faithful users (free or not) to come up with different ways of utilizing the app’s own award system.
It’s not unreasonable to expect that the award system the site offers has a reason for existing.
If you're using the app (not the website) on your iPad, this is because the app uses a different currency than the website. The app's currency is called "Gems"
that's such a great idea! Also, how about they add things that are more exiting to the lingots shop.. (p.s: i think that lingots sound kind of harry potterish... Which is cool, I LIKE IT!!!!!)
How about freezing a streak for a longer periode? The cost per day could increase with the time you want to take of. Maybe this way it would be possible to go on holidays for a week or two.
That would kind of wreck the point of Duolingo though. I mean, I do see your point, it would be so helpful, especially during long trips where you can't bring your electronics. But Duolingo is meant to help you learn languages, not to keep up your streak, isn't it?
Absolutly! One thing that really gets me to do my sh** is the streak. I don't want to break it, but there are more important things in life. And besides that everybody is more motivated to work on something after a break.
I think I will lose quite a bit of my discipline when my streak breaks. Some poeple might be discouraged and stop duolingo all together. And yes I know it's nothing but a stupid number without any real value. Especially in contrast with the language skills this is all about. However it reminds me of how long I did something usefull with my time and it makes me a little proud that I keept my weaker self at bay.
I feel like poeple deserve some real time out after a lot of hard work. Needless to say that the lingot cost must be high enough so this would be an exception. I think some correlation with your streak might be reasonable. It could be cheaper to save a short streak. This would also take the increased lingot reward for long streaks into accout.
I agree with you! But maybe only for only a few days because some people might get carried away and use it for the wrong reasons.
That might be the case. But if its really expensive everybody has to choose their priorities. Who is to jude what the wrong reasons are? Everybody is responsible for ones own decicions and if it's for the wrong reasons that's the persons problem. I think this is no argument for denying everybody something.
I also thought about that a few days ago... People can accumulate large numbers of lingots when they use the app daily, and can't really spend them, so why not try and give x days of pro for y lingots?
Free lesson download would be awesome. Most places we go in summer (beach, lake, woods, car...) don't have Internet, and buying a full account for each kid in the family so they can do their lessons elsewhere than at home inside the house, is a luxury that's beyond our budget.
Wow this is a great idea, especially for kids whose parents don’t want to pay for Duolingo Plus.
It is a good idea. Just checked my lingots and there wasn’t much I could do with them.
Hi am fairly new and need clarity about lingots et c as I feel I am not using benefits available as I should. Can someone kindly explain. Thanks
Lingots are fairly worthless, but there are some things that you can do with them. You can give them to other people via the forums (click on "Give Lingot"), buy a couple extra skills on select languages, buy a streak freeze to protect your streak for one day on inactivity, and Double or Nothing (which gives you more lingots).
Other than that, there is nothing else you can do with lingots at the moment. They're pretty worthless in my opinion :D.
What made you think that? I think more options to spend lingots will keep more people hooked and also gives them a reason to watch the adds (only when you practice on the phone). For me that sounds quite like a win win.
It’ll be more cost efficient to let people have the ability to pay for specific abilities of the plus account. Like maybe pay for a week of no ads or something. The or a progressive quiz. Just like the top comment on this forum mentioned
Yeah, more ways to spend lingots will make people actually WANT lingots. My lingots are just piling up and I don't use them.
it sounds good, but it would also leave less money for the site itself. I feel like the lingots should be able to be used for different, weirder/funnier lessons. I like the spanish ones that they have currently, like flirting and idioms and proverbs, but it would also be good to have lessons that people would be intrigued, and not really be able to just look it up to get the kind of stockpile that they have for the other ones.
I'd like to have the option of a streak freeze for a week so you could go on holiday and not worry about keeping it up!
I love the idea!! I paid for the plus membership six months but canceled it due to my financial situation. I miss the ad-free duolingo though, and i have too many lingots.
What’re those blue crystal things on the computer version of Duolingo? I’ve never understood them and why they’re only on computer and why I have 1,000+ of them. I’d like to get rid of those
One used to (on the app at least) be able to spend money to buy lingots. I consider it equally reasonable to use ligots/gems at a similar rate to use to get Duolingo Plus. I would be more likely to spend them than to bug all my friends to join Duolingo so I can have free weeks.
Two days ago I didn't receive my 125 lingots and 10 for my 7 day wager. This is the first time this has happened to me. Is this normal now?
As long as we have the option to hand out lingots to other users, lingots can and should never have any value beyond what they already have. Add any real value to lingots and the number of lingot begging posts would explode.
We’ve already seen in the past many made-up sob stories and posts full of misguided creativity just to make people part with their lingots. Problem is that well-meaning people will fall for these posts and lingot begging will blossom if one could buy some real advantages with lingots.
they were advertising a new thing were u cld buy a progress quiz with you're lingots
