Or even better, they're both verbs. In the past tense third person masculine singular. "He gave birth and he worked hard." should definitely be an acceptable translation of this sentence! :P

Well, I mean, that is the common usage in MSA, true, but you specifically say "it can't mean girl," which is false. The original Classical ARabic meaning of "walad" is "child"; it is derived from the root meaning "to give birth" after all. So any product of birth is potentially "walad."
