Instead of initial - medial - final, I find it a lot easier to imagine that each Arabic letter has a 'head' and a 'tail'.

For letters ب ت ث ج ح خ س ش ص ض ف ق ل ن ي the tail of the letter only appears at the end of a word, otherwise it is pulled into the beginning of the next letter, as if you were pulling tight a piece of string

For letters ه ع غ م the shape of the letter means a slightly different medial/final shape is needed to avoid confusion, hence هــهــه , ممم , ععع

For letters د ذ و ر ز ط ظ there is no change, but د ذ و ر ز must be left unjoined to the following letter as the tail is really the identifying feature of those letters.

For letters ا and كـ there is a slightly different final, ـا and ـك

Finally If ل is followed by ا you must use the special form لا

Hopefully, that makes sense. If I missed anything, please let me know :)

Thank you Yahya. This is probably the best Arabic alphabet list I have ever seen (in all my time trying to learn the script), because it is simple yet complete. If only such a clear, well-organized list was presented in the DL Arabic course and elsewhere. In any case, your contribution will really help me learn how to read, write and speak in Arabic, إن شاء الله ...

If you could next teach all the small, diacritical marks, like ء/hamza, for example ....
