Isn't it like "what is the news"?

It literally is, but in use it is more like "what's up?" or "how are things?"

Why does it need to be THE news? Can't you say "what's new", without THE? Is أَخْبار wrong in this case?

Doesn't it mean great or big and not new ? Like in Allah akhbaar

But isn't it "Allah akbar", not akhbaar? The second letter is a ك after all, not a خ, and there is no alif, it's only a fatha on the ب , right?
