"I ragazzi fanno tardi."

Curious, why "fanno" and not "sono"?

In Italian to have the same usage as in English you need to translate 'late' with 'in ritardo': "I ragazzi sono in ritardo". When you use 'presto' (early) or 'tardi' (late) referred to a subject (i.e.not impersonal) you need to use the verb fare.
