Grammar in Arabic: Sun and moon letters

So basically this post is like a follow up explanation on the definite article الْ. If you missed that post, here's the link: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/32949289

And if you just want a place where you can find the links to all my posts, here's the link: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/32951150.

Now onto our topic, sun and moon letters. This title might sound very weird but there's always a reason why and that will be explained at the end. XD

Sun letters. Hmpf......... So let's start with a word الّسَّمَاءُ as-samaa2u the sky. Notice how the ل laam in الْ al is not pronounced and the first letter س sa is stressed. Another example النِّسَاءُ an-nisaa2u the women. Notice again how the ل laam in الْ al is not pronounced and the first letter ن nuun is stressed. This is because ن nuun and س sa are both sun letters. The sun letters are: ت ث د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ل ن and when الْ al is attacheed to the start of the word, you do not pronounce the ل laam in الْ al and the first letter after الْ al is stressed.

Now onto moon letters. This is much easier than sun letters[I mean much more easier XD]. Let's get a word الْبَيْتُ albaytu the house. See here how the ل laam in الْ al is pronounced and the letter after is not stressed. The moon letters are: ا ب ج ح خ ع غ ف ق ك م و ه ي.

Or to see it more clearly, this is a photo Zeta posted on my last post.

Now for why they are called 'sun and moon' letters.

These names come from the fact that the word for 'the sun', الْشَّمْسُ al-shamsu, pronounced ash-shams, the ل laam is not pronounced, while the word for 'the moon', الْقَمَرُ al-qamaru, the ل laam is pronounced.

Hope you guys understood this.

Until next time...................

LOL I'm actually learning from these XD When I learnt it at school, we never got taught them as "letters". We just had to pronounce the word aloud and see if the "laam" is pronounced or not. This is a much easier way of doing it! It's such a shame I hadn't learnt it earlier ;p

I'm actually getting jealous of your GIFs now!! :(((( I need to make it work!!
