If one wants to translate a sentence where the gender doesen't make any difference in English, I think the only way is to construct an other sentence where the gender of the word in question is explicit:
i.e. if you want feminine vs masculine for American, translate:
"he is American"
"she is American"

"My friend" for both genders of the friend - translate:
"he is my friend"
"she is my friend"

I feel like more than one of the options given could have fit...maybe I'm wrong? But "my friend" could have fit in the place of "her friend" and even "his friend" so it was weird getting this wrong several times
