why not "a spring is pretty"?

This would be an incorrect way of speaking even in English. We would either say, "The spring is pretty" or "The pretty spring..." In Arabic, Spring would need to be definite (The Spring) for the adjective to become the predicate. (ie "The Spring is pretty.") Since Spring is indefinite, we know that "pretty" is now describing the noun instead of becoming the predicate on its own. Hope this makes sense!
