Last night, I was watching I Love Lucy, and one of the episodes I watched was about Ricky telling his son a bedtime story. For those of you who don't know, Ricky is Cuban, so his native language is Spanish. Anyway, in this particular episode, Ricky is retelling Little Red Riding Hood in Spanish to his baby boy very vividly. I was surprised when I could understand what he was saying! I also learned a new word, "El lobo" which means wolf. Also, from what I understood, Little Red Riding Hood was bringing wine, beans, and tortillas to her sick grandmother!
It's funny that one of my favorite black and white shows taught me a bit of Spanish! Just goes to show that learning a language can be rewarding in odd ways. Hope everyone who sees this has a wonderful week!
It is a cool story, it shows how learning a new language is like having another filter to look at the world trough.
Thanks for your kind words.
I love Lucy too! I'm sure a fan like you has read this I Love Lucy wiki page. There is a lot of interesting info there.
I am not old enough to have seen the "I Love Lucy" show during it's original run, but I do remember seeing The Lucy Show and the Here's Lucy show in prime time. That was back in the days when everyone in the US watched all the same TV shows.
I actually started watching ILL after my friend named their cat "Lucille" after Lucille Ball. My friend, Lyla, loved that show so much that when I discovered it on Amazon Prime TV I watched it instantly and discovered I loved the screwball comedy style of the show. It was kind of lucky, too. All my friends except one had gone away for the summer and I was really bored. I am going on a long vacation too, but I'm not going as early as they were. I discovered I liked I Love Lucy waaaay more than those Netflix and Hulu shows I had been obsessed with.
I was super excited at the moments when Ricky sings, mumbles and rants in Spanish.
I have a friend who likes I Love Lucy, and we always watch it at her house. I've never seen one with Spanish speaking in it though! That is very cool! I'll have to ask her about that one!
I live in Canada, and I read the French sides of things from the grocery store, (like cereal boxes, shampoo bottles, and many others), to see if there are words that I recognize or new words I could learn.
Well done! ^-^ Even though I don't know what 'I Love Lucy' is. Oh it's a sitcom.
yeap I get very excited when I'm watching a show in English and all of a sudden a character starts speaking Spanish and I understand some of it. Even if it is just little stuff like como estas or a word here or there lol
Same! Yes, just goes to show that learning a new skill can reap unexpected benefits :)
The first episode of season three. I have binge watching it since last week!
You can do this with any language...I have lived in China for 12 years now and I used to watch Chinese TV all the time (I don't get cable now) I would pick up words here and there and use them (sometimes correctly) which would shock some people. I tell my students all the time that watching TV and movies is a great way to pick up the language and idioms. When I first arrived in China the TV show "Friends" was all the rage, now my students watch "Big Bang Theory" I sometimes even show episodes in class to discuss language and culture. I also find listening to music helps as well to pick up phrases because many songs repeat things. Just my insight.
I found out I could understand with the series Breaking Bad. It made me smile as the first few seasons had plenty of Spanish characters and they spoke it plainly and not super fast so Duo learners could understand easily. I would love to know which I love Lucy episode. Ah I see - Season 3 first episode. I'm on it.
This is cool! Nice to know that your skills are being put to the test.
Cool! There are some where Ricky sings in Spanish, so you should try those! Good luck! (I might try to get my mother to do that... or even myself if I manage to improve any)
I have found some of my favorite English tv shows dubbed in Italian, Spanish (Mexican and Castilian), Greek, German, Indonesian, Japanese, and Polish so I am able to watch em now sometimes which is so nice and cool!! Found nothing for Irish, Balinese, Javanese, Malay, Sundanese, and Lithuanian though.
That's so cool!! I love listening to songs in Swedish and Norwegian. And singing along. I enjoy it even more since I can understand most of the words! Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Good job on your Swedish! I see we are both level 16'ers! We have to stick together!
Okay okay that's cool but
Do you actually have a pet peacock??????
IS THAT EVEN LEGAL????????
Yeah. It's legal. Don't worry, he's free range and is not kept with other peacocks besides one female. We give him more than two acres of space and he always has adequate food and water. We also don't pet him, he's still a bird, we need to respect his space (but his feathers he sheds make nice decor). Se llama Peppy.
And here I though no one watched I Love Lucy anymore. I love that show. I remember the episode well. Now with CBS all access I can watch the original Hawaii Five-O as well.
¡Cuidado con el Lobo, que tiene ojos grandes para verte mejor, y boca grande para comerte mejor!, keep un the good work ;)
