Could you ask this question using apakah instead of apa? I felt that is the best way to ask a yes/no question.

Yes, you can use "apakah".

Ali why do you feel apakah is better than apa?

I learned apakah as being used for questions beginning with 'is it A or B' and 'do you...' . I felt that it was to be used when the answer was a choice of two options rather than an open question. Thus in the question above, apa sounds wrong to me.

In this example, I feel the word apa sounds incorrect too. This is the way I learned them but I'm not certain if that I'm correct.

I was originally taught Apakah then question or Apa then question kah, and maybe even question then kah or apakah.

There is a miriad of ways to ask questions, including not even using question words like apa. Would be great if someone did a write up on them all.

I was thinking maybe you had trouble being understood with apa vs apakah.
