Warning! What to do if you accidently change the learning language.....
Yesterday I somehow managed to change my learning language to Arabic and then Chinese when having a little look around the site, luckily I was able to navigate around enough to post a help message and was able to change everything back into English with the help of some very nice people!
I thought I would put some basic instructions up in case it happens to anyone else (it seems to have happened to a few people! haha)
Link to original thread for more details: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/3314090
1 Hover over the username (for me this was the only thing in English so might be a good place to start)
2 Click on the second section down (this takes you into Settings) N/B I am not sure if this is the same in Arabic, Chinese etc see ceaer and allintolearning's posts on original thread
3 Click on the second section down in the smaller white box (the profile box - there should also be second larger white box on the screen to confirm that you are in the right place!) This should take you into the learning language section
4 Click on the drop down menu and pick one of the 'I want to learn to Spanish/French' etc or the 'I want to learn Spanish, I speak English' basically anything in English and hopefully this should get you back! Edit: Shortcut to this step with thanks to stewl! https://www.duolingo.com/settings/direction
If anyone thinks I've a made a mistake let me know :)
If you change your learning language (say, if I changed mine from English to French) and take a course from that language, will your progress in your current course (in this case, English) be erased?
Hi Truemi, well when I finally managed to change back to English the 'English for Arabic' speaker's course that I somehow enrolled for was listed with my other Spanish, French etc for English speakers courses, however I promptly removed it for fear it might get me again lol So I think you can swap native languages without your course/progress being erased (the whole ordeal didn't affect my levels) but please double check before you do anything - I don't want to be responsible for you losing any of your hard work! :) Hope that helped!
It might be an idea to set up another account and set up that account in French and keep your current one in English if you want to be on the safe side.... :)
There's no need for multiple accounts. You can swap between base languages as often as you like. I do it probably several times in an average day, swapping from the Eng-->Fre course to "learning English" through the Fre-->Eng course.
Great! Is there a FAQ's section? I've been wondering about a few things but can't seem to find much info, unless I'm missing it as I only joined a few days ago....
Osagiboy lists a Wiki to help with this in this discussion: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/5416008$comment_id=5417114
On the original thread, bchan had a different shortcut to learn Spanish for English speakers.
Yours can be easily changed if someone wants a different language from English. Of course, once in English you can change or add any other available option easily enough.
Say, blue2687 were the discussions all written in Arabic and Chinese too? I don't think that I tried to read discussions when I crossed over to an unknown script. I suppose we should save these pages to our favorites.
The discussions were in English (although I had to write from the right to the left which was a bit weird) I put the link to the original thread above if you want to have a look :)
Yes, I met you there earlier; but, as I was coming from English, I wasn't sure if you were seeing the same thing exactly. That is cool, for how else could you have escaped. I should have known that we can type in any form in the discussions.
Just looked at your username, I remember you now :) Yes for some reason it was in English, maybe it automatically takes to you the threads that are in the language you type? If you type in Arabic maybe it takes you to the Arabic speaking threads.....
Took me a few goes to actually post anything though as I was just randomly clicking Arabic buttons to try and post something! lol When we were in the discussion all the buttons etc were still in Arabic, I just kept clicking on the green one to post....
I did this intentionally. Since there is no English to Arabic course, I figured I knew enough Arabic to learn more by doing the Arabic to English course. This worked fine, BUT: 1) It was extremely difficult to figure out how to get back to English. (Thanks for that answer.) 2) Duolingo doesn't remember my work as a speaker of a different language. All of my work in different languages is gone when I'm in Arabic. And my Arabic is gone when I'm in English. ?????
Even though I have studied Arabic, it's pretty rusty. The one critical thing missing from this post is to click on the GREEN "Save changes" button ABOVE the learning language menu. In most languages, this button will be above and to the right, but with a left to right language, it's above and to the left of the learning language menu. I kept expecting the Save changes button to be anywhere but above the menu, hence 24 hours to get out of this trap.
I had to use Google Translate to decript the button texts — a dictionary of classical Arabic isn't much help with 21st century online terminology.
Thank you so much!! This was really helpful!! I was super stuck and I thought I would've had to restart my progress, but thanks to you I don't.
Once again, thank you!!
Thank you so much!! Very helpful!! I was stuck in a rough situation and thought i would've had to restart!! Once again, thANKS
Thank you so much I really appreciate your help! I thought that my doulingo was going to stay like that forever! I shall give you an lingot in reward! :)
Thank goodness this post exist!!!! I'm a Cadet Teacher and when students don't sign out people change the language and I couldn't figure it out!
I am having trouble with getting mine back to English. I don't remember what language I clicked on. Google translate isn't helping much. Help. I'm using an iPhone. So how would I go about doing it from my phone. Or can I do it from the website? Thank you
Thank you so much. I've been tearing my hair out for a while now trying to fix this.
I did it and it worked. It reset me back to zero though but I dont care. The structures in French are similiar to the structures in Spanish, I was getting confused translating from English to French.
you did not say that the little wight box was on the side, i was looking forever to find it and was getting upset becouse i am a long way on german and i do not want to start over, but thx overall
Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to change the language to my native language (Spanish) . What I made was logged out and choose a new profile with my iPhone language in Spanish.
Unfortunately muy the language attached to our profile can not be changed for us. For that reason a make a new profile.
Duolingo team may fix these issues.
this worked thanks so much i looked at so many websites and videos thanks
thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much, i made this mistake in spanish class in school and it was a big joke. i couldn't get this undone for almost 2 years
That was so helpful! I have been trying to change my settings since last year! Yay!
OMG! You saved my life! I was messing around and accidentally changed mine to Japanese! Thank you!!!
Oh my god, thank you soo much, i accidently put my language in japanese, lol.
Thanks Britblue.... I was getting really pissed off because I was afraid they had a blunder in the way they programmed this. I was able to get back to all my original courses. I think DuoLingo really needs to modify this because it is a terrible setup. I was just trying to see if I could look at their English course because occasionally I have questions about grammar that I can't find online. Of course the only way to see an English course if you are an English speaker, is to change the language so you can see it as one of the course options. I never thought it would be this messed up to try to get back... :)
The directions various people posted may work for you, but didn't for me. Duolingo changes over time, and the steps might depend on your phone (Android, iPhone) and if you are using the web browser. Here's what I did: 1. Create a new Duoling account in English using another email address. 2. Log into that account in one browser. 3. Log into my main Duolingo account in another browser. 4. Carefully navigate to the "settings" in both accounts. Basically, use your new account as a guide, then do the same thing on your original account. The menus items are typically in the same positions. Change the language to English on both accounts and you should be set. Lastly, for me, my mobile app was correct the next time it was launched.
Thank you. This happened to me and I realized I had no way to contact DuoLingo. Your solution was perfect.
VERY helpful - have a lingot - and thanks!! I accidentally changed it to Hindi, which, fortunately my partner speaks - but your explanation still made the fix MUCH easier.
it brought me to languages in English but it treated it like i knew English and Greek (my friends turned it to Greek as a prank) but the main site language was still greek:(
whats English in Russian Help i accidentally did this omg i cant read anything!!!!
First hover over your username and click on the second thing that shows up. Then, click on any random thing that says, "I want to learn..." and save the changes. It should revert back to English again.
You just saved my life! I thought I would have to re-start (I just wanted to learn irish, dangit)!
hi. i'm so stuck in the arabic page. i think i've been to the page mentioned to change the language, but there is no listing in English at all about learning another language.
it doesn't let me i changed it to Japanese now it only has one in that section
I tried this and it isn't working! Clicking on the box gives me a drop-down menu that only has 4 options, all of which are written in Arabic. After clicking each of them, I believe I got different languages for Arabic speakers. Help!
I clicked on the circle with the flag of the country I am learning and reselected the language. It changed the page to English.
I need some help with changing the language that you read to sign out and view your profile. I speak english, but all I read right now is Ukrainian. Please help me change the language that I am not learning!! Thanks:)
https://www.duolingo.com/course/es/en/Learn-Spanish-Online Just click on the white encircled button with white text and Poof! You are back in English. If you did not want to learn Spanish from English, click on the words "All Courses" on the top left of the picture. and choose the one you want. This link was given to us during a different discussion by bchan, a moderator.
This was very helpful. Here's an additional example. Let's say you want to learn French and suddenly your page is in vietnamese. When you follow these steps, do not chose French as the Language you want to learn in English. Chose something else to learn in English, (remember to save using the green button) then you can change it back to French after your page updates to english. Good Luck.
what happened to me: my own language change d to russian and I can not change it back. I followed your steps too and nothing changed , all my hard work gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is your original language? https://www.duolingo.com/settings/direction At this site, click on the button written in blue on white with a blue circle around it and you will see a list of all the languages Duolingo has to offer printed in the language to be learned from, pick one you understand in your language or one you already know and click on it. Then click on the button which is usually on the top right printed in white words on Green which is "Save changes" written in whatever language you happen to be in now. Then you will be in the base language that you have chosen. Please remember that you just cannot see your other work, it is not gone. It is waiting for you to return to your other base language.
Unless it's a language with a right to left writing system (like Arabic), in which case, the green button moves to top LEFT.
Yes, you are correct! At least it is still green and near the top, thank you for catching that!
THANK-YOU... I was stuck on this and was not getting an answer back from Duolingo. This was a GREAT help!
thank you sooooooo much! i accidentally changed it to Hungarian and tried for 3 days to change it back
I don't think you've made a mistake... but you suggestions didn't work fo r me! I did all you said but I'm stuck in Arabic so I can't tell what to do on the last step!! Help! :) firstname.lastname@example.org
Thanks that is helpful.. I nearly had to learn Chinese just to figure how to change back to English :)
I thought it was some kind of weird immersion thing. I did learn something - I geef you 2 lingot ;)
Thank you so much for the instructions. I was in Japanese as my base language. Have an awesome day!
Thanks for this and here's a lingot.. I was so nervous when I clicked Japanese (just for fun). I thought my Spanish, Swedish and German courses were deleted. Thanks again.
Thank you so much! I selected to do the English for German speakers course and suddenly I couldn't see any of my other languages and I had no idea how to change back. I nearly had a heart attack until I saw this post.
Thank you so much! I was so bummed with myself when I couldn't read a thing...now all fixed thanks to you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I changed my settings into Chinese like a dummy. I know no Chinese. Thank you!
I accidentally changed it to a different language like I can't get back to my original account. I am really confused and am struggling! Someone please help!
Thank you so much for this, I accidentally changed my language to Greek and was suddenly so confused. Kind of ironic considering this is a language learning website, haha.
THAAANK YOOUU everything was in Japanese and I thought I was gonna have to make a new account haha
You saved my butt, I was stuck in all Korean text for the longest time! Thank you!!!
Thanks so much for posting. I was learning french and all of a sudden I was stuck in Portuguese. Ha Ha. Thanks so much for your help.
Thanks for this. I accidentally changed my language to Chinese and that was a real struggle to try to fix. This advice helped!
Omg thank you so much, I literally changed my language to Greek and I had no idea what to do.
EVERYTHING is in Arabic. The only thing I can do is change my picture. I tried deleting the app and downloading it again but nothing changed
thx for the link now my friends are giving me lingots because i did give lingots too thx for idea it help me alot
And the last step, after the ones listed by BritBlue above - 5 Don't click on the green button. Instead click on the script (mine when I got stuck in Arabic didn't even look like a button and the the script was green) slightly above and to the left (or right, depending on what language you're stuck in) to save changes.
help i did this, but how do i confirm. I think my base language might be greek or something judging from the characters. Not sure how i'' ever get back te this thread to read the answer though... :( Ive gone to the settings/ direction. Chosen a few language i speak (i know englich) but my base language continues to be russian or greek or something i really do not understand
Can you hover over the round flag next to your round picture (or where your picture would be had you added one), which are to the left of your user name in the top menu? So left of your streak flame? Since I'm learning multiple languages, I get a whole list of languages when I do that, you might get only one, but at the bottom there is a row of text that doesn't have a round flag next to it. Click on that, and you should get to the page where you can choose courses, with a drop down menu on the top right where you have to choose a language you know. If you are in Russian, English will be called английский or по.английски, depending on the phrasing. Then pick the course you want, and be sure to click the oval "button" with text in it under the name of the course, next to the picture, to actually switch to it.
I'm posting this on your stream as well, in case you can't see it here. I have to say your user name clashes funnily with your current predicament. :-)
I am on a computer. I cannot seem to find the drop-down menu and I do not want to be trapped in Spanish!
My duolingo went into spanish and I lost everything. It says I'm level 10 english and i still have my streak but all my languages are gone. Still isn't working.
please help it doesn't have the option Spanish to english etc it just has languages listed and when i choose english and say save changes it just stays on french
Don't do that. It means you're trying to learn English with French as your base language. Try clicking on your language flag and going to 'Add a New Course'. Once you're there, you'll see a large heading. Next to it is a smaller bit of text with a drop-down menu. This says 'I speak'. You click the menu and pick the language you know (the one you want to learn IN; your base language). Everything should change back once you've done that. For example, if your base language is English, the courses on offer should change to those for English speakers. I think that's it. Good luck! Oh, by the way,if your language right now is French, then the names of all the other languages will be in French. Better look up the name of the one you want.
The same thing, but everything is in dutch. I followed these steps and thy didn't work
This link I think is appropriate for you.
I changed mine into Arabic accidentally, and obviously I couldn't read the symbols to tell me which one was English. Google Translate works well, usually,
This should do it for your learning past.
help me idk how to go back to english because its all in arabic and i lost all my progress.
Go here : And change course.
Also - check here, for other ways to change course:
I did find myself here after accidentaly changing my language to Arabic! Reached the right page with the drop-down list too... but I don't see any option in English! SOS situation here

Thank you very much for this! I knew I had made a mistake when everything turned to Español, but I hoped there would be a helpful post in the discussion forums. Fortunately, this exists! : )
I want my last app for Duolingo so can you help me please I made a mistake and I don't want to start the beginning again
I am not understanding what your problem is. Please can you give more information ?
Have you reset your course ? So that you are starting at the beginning of your course.
hi good morning... yes I maded a mistake deleted my last app of duolingo and now only if entry with this link I can use my account and u want to have my original account in my screen... however I love the new has more people and clubs but I don't want to star again if the beginning
I see you have reached level 25 for Learning English from Spanish ! Congratulations on this admirable achievement !
There have been many updates to your course in this last year.
You might like to read about them, here:
And also the associated related articles on the left. Perhaps read about this BEFORE you reset your course.
Also there are lots of new resources for you to check out, in :
I hope this may be of some benefit to you. Wishing you all the best with your language learning.
To progress faster up the tree, if you have the proficiency, you can choose to :
1. Reset your progress: see: https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204611934-How-do-I-reset-my-progress-
2. Refresh your home page, and if you are accessing through the internet, you will get an option that looks like:
And if through an app, it should offer you something similar.
If you have the proficiency, then this will allow you to complete many of the tasks. However it may also leave you with more skills to re-do that currently you have marked as completed. It depends on your proficiency when you take the test.
Remember, it is not your tree that is important. Completing your tree is a motivation to your learning. What is most important is what you learn.
