Practice Weakest Words is Definitely Broken
The algorithm for Practice Weakest Words is not working at all. I get the same sentences over and over and over. I love everything else about Duolingo but this makes it harder to go over older material.
OK, we think this is fixed now. Please test "practice all skills" and "practice weakest words," and let us know if you actually get your weakest words more often now (these are words highlighted in blue in translate challenges, and displayed on a scroll at the end of the practice session).
Also let us know if you experience any other new weirdness. The fix was pretty complex (sorry it took so long) and we want to make sure we didn't break anything else in the process...
Today it becomes worse. Sometimes clicking on practice button leads to redirection to the home page without any practice. In some cases practice works, but again only with few words over and over again. And words which was practiced few days ago, stayed untouched.
This happens in Plurals lesson of German. At Adjectives: Predicative lesson it seems to be alright...
Geraskin, not all users are getting this fix by default, but I added your account to the experiment. It should be fixed for you now... let us know if you're still having problems.
Its still broken. Some words still don't get "practiced" even when they are practiced.
We have a fix for this that should be rolled out today.
Just to be clear: this is the "practice weakest words" from the vocabulary page, correct? Does it happen both from the main vocab page and the skill pages?
Thanks for staying on top of this. Weirdly, our fix for this problem breaks a few other things, so we haven't pushed it to the website yet. But we hope to have it all squared away ASAP.
I have only tested it out from the main vocab page, that is where I have been having the issues. I am not sure about the individual skill pages. Thank you for the quick fix though, I eagerly await its deployment. This will certainly help my progress!
Does anybody else still have issues with the algorithm used for Practice Weakest Words (which I guess is now called Strengthen Skills) ?
I've been using the global Strengthen Skills to catch up with lessons that have decayed, and the amount of repetition of the same phrases is really annoying and makes the whole process really tedious. The selected phrases don't even seem to come from the decayed lessons, so I have to use the Strengthen button on individual lessons to prevent them to decay any further.
I thought first that the problem was that I didn't practice enough, but the amount of repetition of the same phrases (which I got right several times) and the different discussions talking about issues with the algorithm seems to indicate that this is still a problem.
Hi loran, are you having problems for a particular skill, or is it when you practice all skills?
Hi! For instance, I've just done a timed practice for Italian Verbs: Present 1. I got 19/20 but this didn't do anything about my decay because I kept being tested on the same words I know very well rather than those that I actually need to practice. Is there anything I could be doing on my side to make this better (I'm finding it difficult to 'fight the decay' other than redoing every lesson within a particular topic one by one)?
I agree with this. The algorithm is definitely giving me varied sentences now, unlike before where it appeared "locked" on a few phrases, so thanks for that. However, they are not the words with the greatest decay, so I am also having a difficult time getting the gold bars back on my weakest words. I am noticing this in Practice Weakest Words.
OK, this might actually be a different problem than loran's. Is this happening to you for both German and Spanish? And does it happen for both "Practice all skills" (the skill tree page) and "Practice weakest words" (vocab page)?
Only Spanish, I don't use German and can't get rid of it. I believe it's happening to me on "Practice weakest words" (vocab page) but I always thought they were the same thing since they point to the same page (http://duolingo.com/#practice). Thanks for investigating these issues!
Just to be clear, nugget84, this is happening for "Practice Weakest Words" for a particular skill, or for your vocab as a whole? If it's a particular skill, can you specify which ones?
For me it's been for Vocab as a whole. For example, I have been with Duolingo for over a month now and practice everyday. When I sort my vocab by "Last Practiced" there are numerous words that it says I haven't seen in a month, which is when I started. I would think that if I was actually practicing my weakest words that these should come into the rotation at some point, but they never do. I believe Practice Weakest Words is just giving me random sentences and not pulling from the words I need to practice most. Let me know if you have any more questions, and thanks!
Hi loran, I think we've figured out what's going on and we'll fix it soon. In the meantime, redoing some of the lessons in that skill (from the skill tree skill pages) might "unlock" those weak words that aren't coming up for you and make them available for practice again. I know that's kind of annoying, but a better fix from our side is in the works...
Do you consider this issue fixed?
(I've taken a week off Duolingo but now that I got back, I'm not sure anything has really changed...)
I actually even noticed an other issue: when I go into 'colors' in Italian, the 'practice skill' button takes me back to my main Italian knowledge tree.
PS: I reviewed Duolingo on my blog about open online education in case you're interested: http://www.thegoodmooc.com/2013/04/a-review-of-duolingo.html
This isn't completely fixed yet, loran. :( It turns out, different things are causing similar problems for different people; we have fixed some but not all of them. Unfortunately, your account is affected by one fo the bugs we're still working on.
Please try this: redo one of the lessons in Colors, and then after that do a "practice skill" for Colors. Hopefully that will "unlock" the words from the lesson, and you will get them in practice. If that doesn't work in the meantime, let us know.
I was told to go to this site to avoid crown payments. I did but nothing changed.
