Swedish Stories

I've read that lots of people would like Swedish stories, but I guess the Duolingo staff are busy with other parts of the language learning. Anyway couldn't we just do it here in the comments in this post?

I wouldn't mind creating some simple stories in Swedish and I think that I'm not the only one. In that case would it be most helpful to have it translated sentence by sentence (Ex. Han åt ett äpple (He ate an apple)) or that there's the same story in Swedish and in English, so if you wonder over a sentence or if some part is confusing you could just read it in English.

Would the stories be appreciated? Which one of the translations would be most appreciated?

UPDATE: I will be doing sentence for sentence and if I have the time make one in Swedish and English too. Sentence for sentence is first priority though, if you are fluent in Swedish feel free to do the same!

The first story is up! Feel free to upvote the comment of the story so it is easier to find in this post. I am going to post once a day here for a short period of time, just to get the thing started.

Sven handlar mat (Sven shops food)

Sven går till sin lokala matbutik (Sven is walking to his local grocery store). Han går först rakt och sedan till höger (He goes first straight forward and then turn right.) Sven är vegan och har en inköpslista (Sven is a vegan and has a list of groceries to buy). Han vill ha: (He wants) potatis (Potatoes) bönor (Beans) Morötter (Carrots) Tomater (Tomatoes) Sven hittar potatisen direkt (Sven finds the potatoes right away). Han hittar inte bönorna (He can't find the beans.) "Ursäkta mig," säger han till en butikspersonal ("Excuse me," he says to the working staff) "Var finns bönorna?" Frågar Sven. ("Where are the beans?" Sven asked.) "Den här vägen." Butikspersonalen börjar gå och vinkar att Sven ska följa med. ("This way." The staff starts walking and waves to Sven to come with.) "Tack!" (thank you!) "Inga problem" (No problem) Sven väljer de ekologiska bönorna. (Sven chooses the organic beans.) Nu är det bara tomater och morötter kvar. (Now it is only tomatoes and carrots left.) Han går runt en stund tills han kommer till grönsakerna (He walks around for a bit until he finds the vegetables.) Det är en lång kö till kassan fylld med långsamma personer. (It is a long line to the cashier full of slow people) Till slut kommer Sven ut ur butiken! (Finally Sven gets out of the store) Slut (The end) -- Would you want the future stories to be shorter or longer? More or less dialog? I have an idea with a phone call, would that be appreciated?

I think the lenght is good and the idea of typical daily situations is also good. A phone call could be interesting depending on the topic. Could e.g be a booking at the hotel or a reservation at a restaurant etc.

This is terrific -- thanks so much! Like Sven, I like the length and I like the idea of using everyday situations. I hope you do post a phone conversation.

Personally, I would prefer a paragraph to paragraph rather than a line for line format. Sentence to sentence, it's hard to keep my eye from "cheating" by looking ahead. But please do it the way that is easiest for you.

Sven och Eva bokar hotell (Sven and Eva books a hotel)

Sven ringer till Hotell Jordgubb för att boka ett rum. Han och hans fru ska på en konsert tillsammans i Stockholm. (Sven calls Hotel Strawberry to book a room. He and his wife are going to a concert together in Stockholm)

Johan: "Hej och välkommen till hotell jordgubb, du pratar med Johan, hur kan jag hjälpa till?" ("Hello and welcome to Hotel Strawberry, you're talking to Johan, how can I help?") Sven: "Hejsan Johan! jag heter Sven, jag och min fru Eva skulle vilja boka ett rum." ("Hi Johan! My name is Sven, my wife Eva and I would like to book a room.) Johan: "Ni är alltså två stycken? Vill ni boka ett dubbelrum?" (So you are two? Would you like to book a double room?) Sven: "Det låter super!" ("That sounds super!") Johan:"Hur länge vill ni bo hos oss?" ("For how long do you want to stay with us?") Sven: "Vi stannar fyra nätter. Har du några tips på saker att se i staden?" ("We are staying for four night. Do you have any tips for things to see in the city?) Johan: "Låt mig tänka lite. Vasamuséet borde ni se om ni inte gjort det. Gillar ni Abba?" ("Let me think. You should see the Vasamuseum if you haven't already. Do you like ABBA?) Sven: "Vi var på Vasamuséet senast vi var här, men min fru älskar ABBA! Varför undrar du?" (We were at the Vasa museum last time we were here, my wife loves ABBA! Why do you ask?") Johan: "Vi har ABBA muséet här i stan!" ("We have the ABBA museum in the city!") Sven: "Dit kommer vi gå dagen innan vi ska på konserten! Så jag vet att jag kommer få ut min fru därifrån någon gång!" (We will go there the day before we are going the the concert. So I know I will get my wife out of there!) Johan: "Det låter bra! När kommer ni hit?" (That sounds good! When are you coming over?") Sven: "Vi kommer imorgon kväll. Låter det bra?" ("We are coming tomorrow evening. Does that sound good?") Johan: "Det låter bra!" ("That sounds good!")

It really is no problem for me! I've applied to be a contributor and because that will take a while, I thought that I could start helping in the ways I can! So I will keep going for as long as it is appreciated!

It's definitely appreciated!

By the way, I like the way you translated at natural breaks in your story rather than after each short utterance. For me, at least, it makes it easier reading with less reliance on the English.

I know you'll add a lot to the team when you're officially a contributor.

I thought it would be the best, so you don’t interrupt a flow, also it gives the most accurate translation.

Thank you for the kind words!

Min födelsedag! (My birthday)

Inte en berättelse idag, men jag berättar lite om min födelsedag istället. (Not a story today, but I will tell you a bit about my birthday instead.)

Jag har inte haft tid för att skriva en berättelse idag, jag började, men sedan försvann den. (I haven't had the time to write a story today, I started, but then it disappeared.)

Jag åt sushi för att fira min födelsedag med min mamma och morfar. (I ate sushi to celebrate my birthday with my mom and grandpa (moms side).

Av dem fick jag en klocka som jag har velat ha när jag jobbar och är i skolan. (From them I got a watch that I have wanted to have when I work and am in school.)

Nu på kvällen var jag ute och fotograferade i en park nära mig. (Now in the evening I was out and photographing in a park near me.)

Jag är inte ett stort fan av att fira mig själv. (I'm not a big fan of celebrating myself.) Därför var det här en väldigt bra födelsedag. (Therefore was this a very good birthday.)

Min plan för imorgon är att bara vila mig för ännu en arbetsvecka. (My plan for tomorrow is to just relax myself for yet another working week.)

Kommentera gärna vad ni tycker! (Please comment what you think!) Har mina berättelser hjälpt dig någonting med språket? (Have my stories helped you anything with the language?) Gillar du berättelser eller mer personligt som detta? (Do you like stories or more personal like this?) Jag varierar gärna mellan dessa, då det är lite enklare att skriva vad jag gjort under dagen, men också roligt med små enkla berättelser. (I'd like to vary between these, it is a bit easier to write about what I've done during the day, but also fun with small easy stories.)

P.S jag uppskattar respons mycket mer än lingots även fast jag är väldigt tacksam för de lingots jag fått! (P.S I appreciate response a lot more than lingots even though I'm very thankful for the lingots I've received!)

Hejdå!

Grattis på födelsedag, Ullisvarupptaget! Och tack så mycket för den här beskrivningen av din särskild dag. Det är roligt att läsa vad som helst du skriver. (Happy birthday, Ulli! And thanks so much for the account of your special day. It's fun reading whatever you write!)

Hej! (Jag lär mig svenska för 1,5 månader sedan... :)... I 've been learning Swedish for about 1,5 month, at a slow tempo. I can understand some phrases from your texts in Swedish but the English translation helps me understand (almost) everything. I am glad that this initiative of yours and my decision to start learning Swedish coincided. (A good timing!) Tack!

i think it would be more helpful if they were translated sentence by sentence but its more tedious for you. Anyways, in both ways it is useful.

If you finally decide to write them i think they will be well received and appreciated :)

Sure this would be awesome and appreciated a lot. Even if the translation is not sentence by sentence it should be easy to find unknown words.

I love this idea! Thanks for taking the initiative here :)
