Duolingo sound cuts off in browsers

When I use Duolingo with my computer, I'm having problems with the sound. Every time DL says something, the sound cuts off before the speaker is done. For example, if the sentence is, "Ella va al supermercado", I only hear "Ella va al su..." with the rest cut off.

This happens with Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox, FFox being the worst culprit. It happens on two different computers both running Windows 10, all software up to date. Ad blockers are disabled. The problem seems to be getting worse and is bad enough I can't complete lessons.

Any idea what's causing this? Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks, EdB

I have a similar issue. Usually, in individual exercises, I can get the whole sound clip to play if I click the sound button a few times. Sometimes the big sound button won't work, but the turtle sound button will work. My main issue is that I need to refresh after every 2 or 3 lessons or else the audio will not work at all, or it will stop working halfway through and and I'll need to restart my lesson. This is only an issue with Duolingo, since my computer runs Twitch, YouTube, and other websites with audio just fine. I use Microsoft Edge and Windows.

I have a similar issue to this. I use a bluetooth headset and sound frequently stops playing midway through a lesson, even while I'm still getting audio from other tabs in the same browser. Disconnecting and reconnecting the headset restores the sound for me without having to reload Duolingo. It's quite annoying.

I had the exact same problem when using Duolingo. I couldn't get very far through a podcast without losing the sound completely. I could sometimes make it through a lesson only having some trouble with losing the ends of sentences but then the next lesson either had no sound or lost it completely after a short time. It seemed to be getting worse. Changed my browser to Chrome and all my sound problems are history. The old browser was Edge.

I’m not sure if that’s the same issue, but this morning, I don’t get any voice audio here, except in the Irish course. Could it be that the voice generator currently doesn’t work (Irish has pre-recorded voices) ? Sounds effects are working fine, audio on other websites too, and like you, I tried another browser, but same problem there

Sound problems are common. There is no fix atm. You can try some extensions like https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/read-aloud-a-text-to-spee/hdhinadidafjejdhmfkjgnolgimiaplp

I fixed it, it was actually a weird problem with my speaker settings that had changed for an unknown reason, and it was preventing audio from certain sources from playing

Thanks for the reply. What speaker settings exactly?

Hi :) It was most likely a different problem than the one you’re having, sorry :/ But to answer your question nevertheless, I have an unusual speaker configuration and I needed to turn on "Channel Phantoming". (If you’re on Windows, you can find this by going into the Sound control panel, then in the Playback tab, you select your device and click on Properties, and then in the Enhancement tab.) I know what the option does, but I’m not entirely sure about what happened since I hadn’t touched the settings for a while and it was working fine

Yep same problem for me at times. Really frustrating that this seems to have been a persistent problem for many people for a number of years.

Do you use only the browser version? Maybe Android/iOS version is more stable.
