Ett öl vs. En öl?!!

Hej alla :)

So I was studying in Duolingo in food skills and there was "ett öl" ==> "A beer" but then I saw it on another website "en öl" ==> "A beer" so, is it ett öl or en öl?

Tack så mycket :)

I found the answer in the link below. En öl is used for a glass of beer and ett öl is used to refer to a type of beer. https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/5554825

Oooh tack så mycket :) En lingot för dig :)

There is a general principle behind this.

'Öl' is a mass-noun (dividuativt substantiv). When talking about portions of drink or food a mass-noun is changed into a countable noun (individuativt substantiv) and 'en' is then used regardless of the grammatical gender of the noun.

Another common example is kaffe - coffee.

Tack så mycket :) Good to know that it applies to other nouns as well.
