حكايات كليلة و دمنة - The Tales of Kalila and Dimna 5# - The Merchant and the Jeweller

The Merchant and the Jeweller

A merchant had a gem of high value and he wanted to pierce it. And so he hired a jeweller, with a wage of 100 Dinar a day, and he took him to his house to pierce the gem. And in his house, he had a cymbal, so he said to the jeweller: “Do you play on the cymbals?” The jeweller said: “Yes” and he played well. So the merchant asked him to play. The jeweller took the cymbals and played a beautiful rhythm, and so the merchant was in rapture, and asked him to continue playing. The jeweller continued playing while the merchant leaned right and left, of rapture, until the sun set. So the jeweller said: “The day has finished, give me the fee.” The merchant replied: “And have you done anything for me to pay you the fee?” So the jeweller said: “Yes, I did what you asked me to do.” And he stayed until he got the 100 Dinars and the gem remained unpierced.

The END.

Difficult Words to Learn:

[يثقب = “Yathqib” = To pierce]

[طرب = “T^arab” = To be in a state of rapture. PS: rapture means joy btw]

[صنج = “S^anj” = Cymbals]

[أجرة = “Ujra” = Fee / Wage]

So, what do you think the moral of the story is this time? :D Best one gets some lingots!

It's a lovely story for someone who has finished about a year of Arabic as a foreign language which is years above the level of the Duolingo tree. Why don't you try to write some very short (3 to 5 line) Juha stories using simpler vocabulary and grammar? I can give you an outline of the main grammar points in the whole of the Duolingo tree if you are interested. I can also point out things in your writing to avoid if you are targeting lower levels.

It's quite true that this isn't really helpful to beginners and I did originally aim it towards advanced learners. I might try to find something easier between my old school books [which are intended for beginners] but it'd be great if you could give an outline of what is on the Arabic tree, thanks! :)

Take what you need, not what you want. Something I do horribly.

But guess what happened today.

What I think the meaning of the story is: Do what you were planning to do, also wasting people’s time has consequences.

Yep, I agree! I'd say it's a bit like this saying that you might know which goes "إضرب ما دام الحديد حامياً" or in English "Strike while the iron is hot"

My outline is a bit of a mix of English and Arabic terms. If you create a teacher account you can see the tree from a different perspective. I spent the time to actually learn every level. My conclusion was that it was a great tool for lower level students to use over summer vacation. The pronunciation bothers me and if someone was using this to learn Arabic they would have a lot of problems with listening comprehension.

Your welcome! Look for something called "leveled readers" to get an idea. A university professor already published a book of adapted from Kalila wa Dimna for Arabic students so that might also be worth looking at. Most of the interesting readings for Arabic students are at the intermediate to advanced level (like yours). There is a real lack of fun but simple stories...which are actually the most difficult type of thing to write.

Well the copy I'm using is a student version of the book, it might be the one you're talking about :) It's hard finding an easier book though :S Not gonna give up YET...

يثقب “Yathqib”

Actually means "He pierces".

{thaqaba] is "To pierce" as well as "He pierced"
