Understanding the structure of sentences

Hi all, I'm very new to Duolingo and have only been learning for less than a month. I'm struggling to understand the structure of general phrases/sentences and this is hindering my learning progress a lot!

Does anyone have any tips to learn the structure of sentences etc? I'm able to decipher sentences but when it comes to actually having to type and form sentences in English/Dutch then I really do start to struggle.

Thanks in advance; will update with some examples of where I do struggle/get confused.

Edit: A lot of my current mistakes are in the 'Conjunctions 2: Subordinating' the sentences in this topic just completely go over my head and confuse me so so much.

It's fairly normal to struggle with forming sentences after learning for less than a month.
One possibility is to read up on the sentence structure. The most important thing to know about Dutch is that is a V2 language - in other words, the verb always has to be the second element in the sentence (not necessarily the second word, mind you). But there are a number of smaller rules that you could memorise. You could also read up on it and memorise the examples. It might also help you to write down the sentences you got wrong and try to analyse what your typical mistakes are. Or you just give it more time. As you hear/read more and more sentences, you will eventually develop a feeling for the correct structure.

Sorry to hear you are having a hard time. Dutch word order can be pretty counter-intuitive for English speakers.

Have you found our overview of grammar explanations yet?

The time-manner-place rule keeps surprising me.

Not just one rule.
Just keep on going and try listening to some Dutch online.

Agreed. The seemingly Yoda-esque word order was really hard for me at first. I’m not saying that it’s EASY for me now, but I promise that it really does start to make more sense as you get further into it. Up give do not!
