I became a minor trend setter because of Duolingo.
Just wanted to share this story from college.
In college we were required to take one foreign language class in order to graduate, so like many others I chose Spanish because of how easy it would be to learn because of my native tongue (Filipino). I, being the competitive person that I am, decided to supplement this class with the Spanish course on Duolingo. Soon I was acing quizzes frequently.
Some classmates asked about how I did so well and what techniques I used to study the language. I pointed them in the direction of the scary green owl and by the next class I saw most of my classmates waiting outside the classroom, all on their laptops or phones and learning from Duo. We all got a lot better at Spanish from then on.
It just warms my heart how this app is so accessible and easy to use, I'm glad I came across it all those years ago.
Very clever of you to use Duolingo and very nice of you to share with your fellow classmates. Good story. Thanks for sharing.
Haha that's awesome! I'm glad I came across it all those years ago too.
I am a highschool student taking spanish and I also use duolingo along with my regular class. You are correct, it really does help ace quizzes! I am the best speaker in my class, except for the native spanish speaker of course. No one else wants to take the time to use duolingo, so I am unchallenged.
I love how this app is so easy to use and how people can learn so easily with it :) It's really fun to use. No wonder people love using it.
Thank you for sharing! I am also grateful for this app. Te felicito por llevar Duolingo a otras personas. :)
I like these types of stories on Duo Discussions, they're really encouraging :)
Great story - I can only imagine how helpful it would have been back when I started high school Spanish, 2003 feels like a long time ago!
So glad that it's helping you with your college studies! The internet was not accessible to the general population when I was studying Spanish in school, laptops didn't exist, and cell phones were only used for phone calls. :)
I remember a couple years back a few of my friends were racing each other and trying to speed run their native languages ¯ (ツ)/¯
okay i snorted really loudly at the office reading this lmao
(on that note, i hope one day there's a duolingo esports tournament or speedrun contest haha)
Honestly? I thought of this concept myself, and I was curious to see if anyone has ever considered streaming Duolingo on Twitch.
Wow! I didn't realize there's much Filipinos using Duolingo, too. Nakaka-inspire ang story mo. Too bad, hindi lahat ng sinabihan ko gumamit ng App na to, pero yung iba, gusto naman nila. Duo really is a great app for your desired language to learn. Mabuhay! ^^
Haha, Tagalog is my desired language and it's not out yet xD Can't wait for them to bring out English for Tagalog speakers next year!
It's great that Duolingo really emphasizes Spanish, wish it would do the same for other languages!
Heartwarming to see people from different backgrounds joining together for an educational cause in this day and age. Humanity still has hope! :D
... just warms my heart ...
I would suggest you repay the folks at Duolingo
with an annual subscription. I'm not telling you
what to do. It's only a suggestion. I just think it's
a possible way to repay them for all the good
they've done me, and perhaps it would work for
you as well.
When I did it a few months ago, it cost about
$85 for the year.
Great topic. Thanks for posting. Very inspiring.
i'm sad you're getting downvoted. i agree with you completely!
i currently got my first job so now i'm saving up to pay for stuff i've always wanted to pay for. duolingo is on that list haha
Is it true that Duolingo has revolutionized foreign language instruction in the USA, at least at the high school level? It would be a snap for teachers to assign lessons on Duolingo, and easy to check who did the assignments.
That's what happened when I was a kid. My parents wanted me to learn Spanish, so we took Spanish lessons, every single week. My brother and I mostly got homework, upon homework, upon homework. So, our parents decided something- Doulingo or Senor Wooly, every single day, for at the very least, 15 minutes. Once that was figured out, we became a lot better. Doulingo went into areas of learning that we use every single day, without even thinking about it. In other words, we learned things we couldn't learn from a teacher.
What a wonderful testimonial for Duolingo. I love it and recommend it to people all the time. TFS
"pointed them in the direction of the scary green owl" sounds a bit like you're an NPC in a game giving the player a quest xD
I have two comments for you. 1) how is duo 'the scary green owl'? he is adorable! 2) nice of you to share with other classmates! you could have been the best in class, but you wanted your fellow students to do well too! you are so nice!
Scary owl? Well, the first time it tried to encourage me I almost fell out of my chair so i guess...then again I'm a talking fox so who am i to type?
Wonderful! I agree with you that this app is really very easy to use and as a beginner it really helps ya out in understanding the basics of a language. Moreover it's fun to use.
the scary green owl
¡Me lo encanto!
I took Spanish in college because I was lazy and needed some easy credits...I've worked harder at Spanish in the last couple of years than I did back then thanks to Duo.
I agree, Duolingo really does make things easier if you are a beginner. thanks for the story!
I use Duolingo to "learn" Spanish after taking classes in the classroom, for now, my 6th year. There are some words in the very early lessons my teachers never bothered to teach us, to my surprise!
You are a star bro. They should have given you some lingots in RL haha. Cheers
I wish I knew how effective DuoLingo is when I used to take Spanish in school. I dropped out after Spanish 3 though because I stopped caring. Unfortunately my school does not provide an Arabic class.
Magandang hapon! Salamat! Great story, thanks for sharing. I would like to there to be a course in Tagalog and maybe also a course in Cebuano from English or Spanish here on Duolingo. I have studied a lot of words in Tagalog at Memrise but I didn't learn enough grammar.
Amazing! I'll be doing the same thing with French next year! I think it's incredible how languages and platforms like Duolingo can influence people.
I actually just started using Duolingo with the goal of learning enough Spanish to be able to test out of having to take a Spanish class at uni.
That was a lovely story. Smart idea telling your classmates about Duolingo.
That is amazing. I too have to take a second laguage to graduate, and I decided that I was going to try and knock out spanish one and two in my freshman year. Wish me luck, I have just a few weeks before I start my first year of highschool!
Saan school po kayo? Similar story with me, Nihonggo and Mandarin naman. PSBA-QC ako.
This is awesome :) I use Duolingo to help me study as well, I practice my French on here while also taking a French class in college. It's helped me a lot
