DailyDuo OPEN THREAD
WELCOME TO THE DAILY DUO OPEN THREAD!
Do you have questions, comments, or complaints? Fear not! This post will be a place for you to ask your questions or give your comments and complaints without fear of it being downvoting out of the forums. Throughout the day, you can write down below whatever it is you need/want. This is also a place where you can get direct contact with at least 1 Mod or other Global Ambassador. Please keep in mind that this post is a moderator thread, not posted or run by Staff.
What kind of questions can I ask?
Well, anything, really. From lingots to Leagues, Duolingo to downvotes. Just remember that we can’t answer everything.
Here are some examples of questions that only Duolingo Staff/Employees can answer:
- When will there be x language in the Incubator?
- What do the mods know that we don't?
- Can you do something about x issue in x course?
- Will there ever be stories for x language?
Because you can’t get the answer you need, asking will only be a waste of your time.
Who will answer my question(s)?
Myself, possibly other mods, and anyone else who wants to.
What are some helpful resources?
Ultimate Resource Guide
This is not a complete guide and will be updated in the future as more resources are found/created.
What will happen at the end of the day?
This post will be locked and a new one will be opened tomorrow at 12:00 am UTC (8 pm EDT).
How will I be able to find this post after it's locked?
I've put in a searchable code (YYYYMMDD) in the title, and I’ll put a link to this post on tomorrow’s so you can find it.

Today’s Theme–Feel Free to Answer Here
You can revive 1 dead language. What is it?
Please submit your own ideas for DailyDuo themes in the future here.
Special thanks to all of you that make this possible.
August 10th is the day I reach day 666. Okay that's all. Sorry this is almost 2 hours late.

Nope. My target audience (everyone who uses the forums) and Discord users don't intersect very well. This way, all Duo users have equal chance to contact a mod.
Frankly doing a Discord would be harder for me as far as I'm aware of. I'll put it on the next questionnaire and we'll see.
Edit: You can have your lingot back plus one.
LittleT. Discord would unfortunately exclude many of us who don't use it.
I don't want DailyDuo to be exclusively on Discord. I'm thinking of a live chat or something once a week (we'll see after I get into the groove). You can vote yes or no on the new survey. ^-^
What do the numbers next to the flag next to peoples names mean? i thought it was the number of crowns but now I realized I haven't seen one over 25 so im confused as to what these are.
They're the remnants of the levels system. You used to be able to see them on your profile, but now you can only see the XP on your profile. Fortunately, there's an XP conversion chart (if you follow the link to my resources there's the link to one there) and you can also see them on your Duome.
Moderate the forums so hard that we can see them on our profiles again. Get the staff on the forums, and then moderately tell them to change it back or you'll flag them for spam. I knew I could find a work around to your "I'm just a moderator" thing!
There's a small problem with that... They'd kick us out for abuse of power and then where would we be?
Um, I would, but I can't. I'd love to, but I can't.
I'm just a Moderator.
Not sure how it works exactly but until today my tree had "castle" like checkpoints, where a large block of tree was fully open up until the next "castle". And today I see it is reverted back again to "reach level 1 in skills above". Is it experiment of some sort? Do I have an option to switch back to previously introduced "castle" checkpoints?
So I've got a temporary Discord up and running. I just want to get a feel for it. The link for it is here. You can use voice or text chat. Make sure to read the about for it before you get started!
Thanks for those who participated in the test!
"I don't have the email for the dev team. They can't be contacted AFAIK."
Tatws a belated thank you for your answer.
I think we have found the nub of the problem.
Yes I'm sorry that I couldn't be of more help. I even looked it up again earlier just to see if I missed something but couldn't find the specs.
Maybe try sending an error report? It's not 100% what it's meant for but you're guaranteed to get in touch with someone that may know something. Not sure how useful it'd be, but it's worth a shot.
I'll give it a go Tatws! Thanks again.
EDIT All done. I had a confirmation E-mail and hope to provide actual detail here in case it proves helpful to other students.
EDIT 2 Within the confirmation "Please note that you are not likely to get a personal reply to this message" doesn't fill me with hope.
Has 'Double or Nothing' been discontinued for mobiles (iOS)? Mine has frozen at Day 1 of 7 for over a month. I have reported/sent screenshots to Tech, but no reply. (Sorry if this is the wrong place for this type of question)
Well done Little Tatws. It is the feast of San Lorenzo in Italy, so enjoy a feast on your big day!
Also celebrated in Texas http://visitelpasomissiontrail.com/explore/august-san-lorenzo-fiesta.html (not that I need an excuse to feast)
Connaitre vs Savoir: I read an anecdote somewhere talking about an American man talking to a French woman. Longish story short, he asked, "Connais-tu New York" and she said no. He was asking if she knew of it, she was saying she had not been there. Is this a fluency thing or is "use connaitre for nouns" simplistic? (I am asking because of the raging debate for the Duo sentence, "Connais-tu Marie Curie". Again, "know" vs "know of".)
You'd probably have better luck asking in the French forum. This is just a thread to help out with general Duolingo questions.
Latin didn't die in the usual sense. It evolved into the Romance languages of today. But we can still learn it as a literary language and understand texts from 500 years ago.
