200 day streak! (my story:)

Today, i've accomplished a 200 day streak on Duolingo. I am very proud of myself. Streaks have always been important to me, they motivated me in my learning. For about 3 years I used Duolingo to learn Spanish and I used to have a 20 to 50 day streak and then I accidently lost it and so I became super angry and I decided to quit. I always came back a couple months after, just to lose my streak all over again. I once had a streak of 150-ish days and I was so proud of myself but then an accident happened and I had to go to the hospital and I totally forgot about doing my daily lessons. After that I decided to quit for good, I just didn't enjoy learning Spanish if I couldn't keep my streak. And so I quited Duolingo for good, atlease thats what I thought.

About a year after, maybe less, I was reading Anne Franks diary and she wrote of the languages she learned and not only did her passion for learning languages inspire me but the holocaust and ww2 itself inspired me. After that I became almost obsess with books and stories about ww2 and the holocaust. And so one day after looking up .Auschwitz concentration camp. on my computer I saw that you could go visit them and I almost freaked lol! One of my many goals was now to go visit Auschwitz in Poland. To do that, I wanted to learn german so that in the future, I could go to Poland and also Germany and speak their language!

I logged in on my old Duolingo account and I started to learn german, I actually thought that it was fairly easy for me and so I continued learning it and I fell in love with the language. I now have a 200 day streak of me learning german but even if I lost it i'd still continue learning german because I have a reason to learn it and I love it.

The moral of my story is that you might start learning a language while not really enjoying it so you'd often quit and rush in lessons. But that just means you shouldn't learn the language. Find a language you'll love. Find a reason to learn the language you love and you'll learn it while having fun and one day you'll be able to thank yourself.

Very wise advise.

Awesome! Could you put that into a few paragraphs? It's a great story but very... bulky?

THIS is why I hate the Streak.

Forget the Streak, you are here for the learning.

That is very sad I have also gotten mad at myself because I lost my streak not because of a big thing like you though. I think now by taking your advice "Forget the Streak, you are here for the learning" I think I may enjoy Duolingo better. Thank you, Althea F.

Well done. A language you love is key to happy learning. (Paragraphs are also helpful;-)

The first time I broke a streak (about 60 days) I wasn't sad or angry or whatever, but I just walked away and did other things for about 6 months.

I've since read accounts of streaks tracked on apps for other activities (yoga, meditation, etc.) and it's not uncommon for people to just drift away from regularly doing something they enjoy just because they break a streak.

I'm now at 64 days but I wish I could hide that from myself because I need to make it not important, I'm doing something I love.

Who cares about streaks? Some days I spend 4-5 hours on duolingo and others not even a second.
