What happened to the option to manually type the answers in Mandarin?

Dear all, until a few days ago there was an option to switch between selecting the Mandarin symbols from either a list of given symbols or to switch to manual input. I loved the latter option where I would type the symbols myself using a Chinese keyboard on my phone. Now, it seems that this option is not available anymore. I would like to know why as it helped me to increase my knowledge tremendously. Thank you!

I have the same problem today. It was not an update because after reading your post I disabled automatical updates and I didn't update Duolingo manually. Reinstalling didn't help but I still can type pinyin using the browser app. I changed the rating of the app from 5 to 1 in Play Store because it is now useless for me.

Mine is gone. First I thought it was just not there for the one lesson but I since have completed several lessons and it has never been an option again.

That’s weird. Maybe best to ask a moderator in troubleshooting. Good luck.

Are you using an app or the website?

I am using the App and everything was fine until a few days ago. If I remember it correctly, it was gone after I installed the latest update. I might be wrong though

If you switch to the web version of duo (you can use the browser on your device) you should be able to type again.

They are doing experiments to see if typing will scare people away or motivate them. But first giving you the option to type and then removing it sounds a bit strange.

I tried using the web app but it always automatically switches to the app on my phone

When I manually enter duolingo.com in my browser I can access the web version but if I click on a link I am automatically redirected to the app. But if you are completely locked out from the web versiion you need to uninstall the app. That should give you access to the web app.

Mine still works too. The usual troubleshooting steps include uninstall/reinstall. You might check your keyboard settings too. Like Thea210, I'll also give you a couple lingots for empathy :-)

And now mine won't allow typing either. I hate that. Having to type the Pinyin and choose the correct character meant I had to know the pronunciation and recognize the difference between characters. I am definitely not happy with being forced to use the word bank at all stages. I'll be emailing Duolingo to let them know.

If I delete the app and reinstall it, will I loose all my achievements etc?

Did this help? Have you tried? I've been having the same issue - started a couple weeks ago and I really hate it because I just don't learn the same way without being able to type in Chinese...

As long as you know your username and password you are safe. Everything is stored on Duolingo's servers, not on our devices.
