Popular "SpeakIt" TTS extension stealing Data

If you use "SpeakIt" as a TTS system you should remove it now.

I was getting messages from my security that there was heavy outbound traffic from my computers.

After poking around I found the culprit was a browser extension that I have used for quite some time. It is called "SpeakIt" and has just now been labeled as being in violation of several browser's policies.

Here are a couple notifications I found online:

Chrome and Firefox extension found stealing user data. Uninstall these addons right away

Data leak warning issued to million)s of google chrome and firefox users Forbes

Tks for the warning :-)

What is the function of "SpeakIt"?

TTS = text to speech. As it's a browser extension, one would assume it reads out text on a webpage.

Ok, thank you

Oh my-

Thanks for that! I've been using it for a while, but I haven't gotten any warnings/notifications. Thanks!

Better use Camilo's userscript "Duolingo Tree Enhancer" for the browser Tampermonkey / Violentmonkey addons:

You can view the source before you install it by clicking on the RAW button.

I used to have it installed. Somewhat removed. It was crap. I recomend qTranslate plugin for Windows or TranslateMate for browsers.
