There and here (là et ici)
Question: Ton chien est là.
Possible answers: 1)Her dog is there. 2)Your dog is there. 3) Your dog is here.
good answer: two and three
????????????????? I don't understand. The translation for here in French is "ici". Can "là" also mean here?
In the very common construction of "...est là" in sentences like "Il est là," "Elle est là, "Ma mère n'est pas là," "Jérôme ne sera pas là car il est tombé malade," etc, là can also mean here in the sense of 'present, in the room.'
Là can be use 2 different ways : Tu es là (là as "ici") (you are here, same place as i am in this moment). Tu es là (là as "là bas") (you are there).
So "Là" can mean "ici (here)" and "là-bas (there)"
