Learning Arabic

Soo this is my first post. I'm trying to learn arabic after I found out I'm half Circassian/Turkish. :) Quick question: When do you actually find out what all these words mean? I'm currently using google translate to speak with my family, but it would be nice if I could actually understand them without translating. :O)

Here are the words which I found in a list. Duo is teaching a lot of combination of letters. This helps to learn the sound and to recognize the letters with their different styles of writing, which depends on the position in a word.

But beside this Duo is also teaching some words. But please be careful with the grammar when Duo gives you group of words or sentences. This you should not learn because there are many mistakes.

Have fun and enjoy.

Good luck on Arabic, but just out of curiosity, why don't you learn Turkish if you're doing it because of your heritage?

That's a great question! Most of my dad's family speaks Arabic. Some of them live in Syria. It would be nice to talk to them without having to translate every word through google translate. It's working fine... but it's a lot of work and then when I go back to read what was said, everything has to be translated again lol

I didn't go through the course but to my knowledge they give you some pronouncing practices (the words have no meaning). Not sure though.

Should you be studying Turkish instead?

Most of my dad's family speaks Arabic. Turns out, my grandmother lived in Golan Heights. I'm named after her. My biological name. I'm adopted so I never knew my heritage.

Then you might want to consider learning colloquial (dialect) Arabic of the Levant (or Syrian dialect). However, the course here is a mix of MSA (modern Standard Arabic) and dialects, and completely out of grammar. Not sure what the contributors were thinking, but regular users like me trying to fix the knowledge of some people here and guide them to MSA. Duolingo, for Arabic, can be a starting point only. But definitely the best resource for learning proper Arabic.

I think they're teaching you the alphabet first and after that the translation of words. Otherwise it would be too much to start with I guess.
