Many country names do not come with AL in the beginning (that is, defined with AL), and Syria is one of them. Also, there are two variations for writing "Syria": سوريا (súryá) and سوريّة (súriyyah) - and I saw native Syrians prefer the latter version more.

Some countries that come with "AL":
Kuwait: الكويت
Saudi Arabia: السعودية
Bahrain: البحرين
Yemen: اليمن
Somalia: الصومال
Sudan: السودان
Algeria: الجزائر
Morocco: المغرب
Portugal: البرتغال
Denmark: الدنمارك
Sweden: السويد
Norway: النرويج
Bosnia Herzegovina: البوسنة والهرسك
Montenegro: الجبل الأسود
India: الهند
China: الصين
Japan: اليابان
Philippines: الفلبين
Pakistan: الباكستان
Brazil: البرازيل
Argentina: الأرجنتين
Ecuador: الإكوادور
Peru: البيرو
Mexico: المكسيك
USA: الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية UK: المملكة المتحدة

The Netherlands: الأراضي المنخفضة (but for short, mostly people would say it as هولندا Húlandá).
