Rule of Thumb Six - English words that end in -ic

Many English words ending in -ic have equivalents in Esperanto. -ic can become -ik(o/a), -i(o/a), or -(o/a). Often, the resulting Esperanto word is an adjective form of a noun, or some sort of "science" like cosmetics or arithmetic. Some examples are (less exact matches are in italics):

  • aesthetic - estetika | estetiko (aesthetics)
  • agnostic - agnostika
  • algebraic - algebra | algebro (algebra)
  • allergic - alergia | alergio (allergy)
  • anarchic - anarĥia, anarkia | anarĥio, anarkio (anarchy)
  • antarctic - antarkta | Antarkto (Antarctica)
  • aquatic - akva | akvo (water)
  • Arabic - araba | arabo (arab person)
  • archaic - arĥaika, arkaika
  • arithmetic - aritmetiko
  • arsenic - arseniko
  • ascetic - asketo
  • authentic - aŭtentika
  • automatic - aŭtomata | aŭtomato (automaton)
  • balsamic - balzama | balzamo (balm)
  • barbaric - barbara | barbaro (barbarian)
  • catholic - katoliko
  • chaotic - ĥaosa | ĥaoso (chaos)

Rule of Thumb Seven - English words ending in -ence or -ance

A handful of words that end in -ence or -ance have Esperanto equivalents. Some examples are (less exact matches are in italics):

  • abstinence - abstini (to abstain)
  • acceptance - akcepti (to accept)
  • adherence - adheri (to stick to)
  • adolescence - adolesko -> adoleskulo (adolescent)
  • alliance - alianco
  • ambulance - ambulanco
  • audience - aŭdienco
  • chance - ŝanco
  • circumference - cirkonferenco
  • condolence - kondolenco | kondolenci (to condole, to commiserate)
  • confidence - konfidenco
  • conference - konferenco
  • conscience - konscienco
  • consequence - konsekvenco
  • dance - danci (to dance)
  • difference - diferenco | diferenci (to differ)
  • defence - defendo | defendi (to defend)
  • effervescence - efervesko | eferveski (to fizz)
