Join us in London in September!
Duolinguists, we have a Duolingo Conference (Duocon) happening in London next month, so if you are around that area on September 21st 2019, come hang out with us!
We are planning a Saturday (21st) of inspiring conversations and presentations by staff, Ambassadors, and special guests. All Duocon attendees are also invited to a kick-off party we're having on Friday evening (20th).
First dibs went to Global Ambassadors, staff, and special guests, but we have now made room and released new last-minute tickets for additional Duolingo fans and language enthusiasts. All tickets are free. (If you hurry, last time I checked there were still some VIP tickets available, and those get special treats at the event).
Please remember you must have a ticket in order to get in, and you should also be over 18 years old. Make sure you write down each attendee's name on each ticket; names will be checked at the door. Get your ticket today, and we hope to see you there!
I was impressed that I worked out how to catch a copy of that animated gif from the files in https://www.duolingo.com/press !
One day I hope to take the time (find the time) to learn how to create, and to resize animated gifs. Though lets not get off topic to the Original Post(OP) topic. If you want to take a discussion on animated gifs to a new level, perhaps check out : [GUIDE] Duo emoji.
Especially though, thanks for this laugh hoges.110 (Sergeant Schultz) !
Making GIFs is really easy.. You can draw a few animated costumes in any program, download them, open them or some photos in a website like gifmaker.me and download. I use photoshop to create my gifs actually, unless i'm on a different computer than my own. I've made a few, but I'd like to keep them to myself :) Sorry if you didn't want someone telling you how to do it, I can delete it if you want :P
I happen to live on the other side of tha planet, I'm hoping there will be a livestream of the event so I can attend in spirit :)
Check out in this very discussion:
Yes, Jim! We are hoping to either stream or record/upload videos to those interested.
And yes - I am also VERY EXCITED ( amongst other feelings, as is common for a Roo )
Awesome! Would love to see this as a preview for when it happens in the states!
Why are most events 18+ only?? Like a lot of the youth love language learning!! I'm one of them!! It's sad how we are not invited!!
Because some of the locations require it, unfortunately. Sorry about that!
Care and concern. Insurance. Preference. Look around and you will find opportunities for your age group.
Just hang in there, It's most likely for safety and to avoid lawsuits they make this kind of events 18+
Oh darn. I just booked my rare flight to Europe for next April. Would love to attend a gathering of the duolinguisti.
Yes, Jim! We are hoping to either stream or record/upload videos to those interested.
I would love a livestream or videos on the event. Sounds like its really going to be a great time!
We're looking to set this up with Twitch. I'll update this thread once we know if we are live streaming, and we have details (so stay subscribed and check back here)! The live stream time might not work for everyone, so we want to make videos available for later viewing too. (The Friday party will not be streamed though)
Sorry.... I'm going to Korea.... I won't get to come...
But have fun, guys, have fun!
You are soooo lucky to be able to go to Korea !
I hope you have a great time. It is so wonderful to be able to experience a different community and put your language learning to use in real life situations.
the party is the same day as the area 51 raid...duo are you trying to tell us something?
Maybe it'll be a sort of Roswell incident - with a strange green, winged alien (with a beak and large eyes) at the centre of the crash site......
If this is a Duocon will there be any special announcements about what is coming up for the future of Duolingo (Much like what gets announced at events like Blizzcon, Minecon, etc?)
I think your website needs a tweak. Marleybone is in fact Marylebone. Shame but I'm happy to report I'll be riding a motorbike in Spain on that date. Hope it's a lot of fun-for me and the attendees.
Score for the UK! A good laugh for all those who complain that Duo uses American English. (Like most things on the web, they need a good proofreader.)
Whenever there is an Australian regional difference that's counted as "wrong," hit the "report a problem" button and choose, "my answer should also be accepted." If you have time, also hit the "discussion" button and explain it there.
Remember to pronounce it "Marrybone" like old- time residents did, and many still do.
Thanks for the info Vivisaurus! Got my VIP ticket to join the crowd! Live in Australia but visiting London on that day. Lucky.
No can do, all the Area 51 raiders are counting on me to supply weapons. Plus, I'm a rank green Naruto runner. They need me.
Marylebone is a nice area, like a village - sandwiched between Oxford Street to the south (1.2 miles/1.9km of shops with thousands and thousands of shoppers - my idea of hell) and the (very congested) A501 Marylebone Road to the north.
I am so curious as I have not been in London in a very long time... the 70's were wild there! At that time, my charter flight to New York had been canceled, I was stranded, without money. I ended sleeping in St. Vincent's Hostel for free in exchange for waking up others and sweeping the floor.. I got a piece of bread for breakfast and I could not have been happier... walking around London with no money!!
This sounds fantastic, but there isn't enough advance notice. If I had another few weeks to plan, I could have made it.
Well I booked a ticket and the train tickets. Now I just have to get someone to cover for me as I am supposed to be working. As I haven't had a day off in twelve years this is quite a big deal for me!!!
This is so cool, I live close and will be attending with gf, also on duo. I have a question though, since I have bad anxiety and I benefit from knowing what to expect, are you able to tell us more about both events?
Try travelodge, I stayed a month ago in Travelodge London City Hotel, nice place .
Hi baobabusa, I'm gonna be honest with you, hotels in Marylebone are too damn expensive, I live south of the river, my advice is to just get a cheap hotel, b&b or hostel and get to duocon by public transport, you actually save a lot, a bus ride is only £1.50, and you can ride how many buses you want for 70 minutes after you take the first one, or get the tube instead. You can find deals in central London but if you are looking to save absolutely avoid Marylebone. Try searching on booking . com or trivago...
How about just checking Google maps? If you find the address of the bar, or the conference hall, and then search for hotels nearby, google maps show them with prices. Includes hostels as well. You can select the dates in the menu, and you'll see the prices for the selected date range. And not just one price, but multiple from various booking sites.
Thanks for reminder! I will do that . I wonder what the hostels are like these days... I did that in the 70's !! Another user suggested Travelodge London City and that is a new hotel and pretty good deal .. interesting that Wednesday night is almost double the price of weekends and Sundays.
Yes I had read those but I'm still very anxious about it ahahah, jeez. Also, hostels are alright now, a friend of mine stayed in one in Borough called Dover Castle Hostel, very nice, it's only half an hour or less from there to the Cavendish conference centre.
Yes, you should get an email this week with some more details. =]
My first holiday for years - and I'll be missing DuoCon :o(
I hope everyone enjoys it and look forward to being able to attend the next...
I'm very sorry, on next Setember I'll don' stay in London. I'll must stay in Barcelona because I'll begun a new course of English
My sun has his eighteenth birthday in february, can he come over from Belgium ? He does languages-economy at school, and is fluent in Polish and Dutch. Please ? Of course I want to join too, we will make a weekend trip to London if we can join the happening !
Sounds like fun, wish were going to be there, but will try to watch the livestream.
Is it London, UK, or London, Ontario, Canada, or maybe some other London?
Shabbat Shalom! I am a big fan of the Duolingo and I REALLY wanted to go to the event but unfortunately, I am here in Israel for my Bar-Mitzvah and cannot make it over to the England for the conference :(
I was wondering if maybe the event would be accessible via VR? I have a HTC Vive Headset and could maybe hook it up so I can look around the event and say and watch a live feed of the event from my HTC Vive (which I will be using in the backroom of my Bar Mitzvah).
Maybe next year, it could be the Asia Pacific ;)
Ideally - Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland, or Singapore
Low key tempted to go but I'll have to spend $1200 on flights.
The tickets are free.
You need to organize your own transport, and if necessary accommodation.
Looks like the tickets all include the Friday night party, which I can't make. Any just for the Saturday? I don't want to book a ticket for both and stop someone else from going to the party.
That's OK, thanks for being considerate! I believe there is an option (checkbox) in all tickets to say if you intend to attend the party. We have extra party parrot tickets, and we can make more available depending on how many people indicate they cannot make it. =]
Aargh - would have loved this but its London Open House Weekend (always the third weekend in September).
